I just remember this song way back when I was in 1st grade. A girl in my class died in a car crash, and we all got a CD with this song (and a few others) in honor of her. They did a great job of singing this! God Bless.
Is it just me or did the first singer either start flat and get on pitch or start on and go sharp? Either way I think he goes up slightly in the first verse.
Being from the South, I've heard this song more than a few times. This is among the best performances I've heard of this song. You simply can't go wrong with the King's Singers and a Philip Lawson arrangement.
28 people went up to the guy on the far right to ask for Mr Beans autograph. by the way the person with the green mini cooper with the padlock on the door left their lights on :)
@Aberwitz88 60 people dont think so..and what do you know about my posts? and beause i think that my comment was too difficult to understand for you, i'll give you a little tip: my comment was just my view about this kind of music, just like the guy with the second top comment has written ok? that is what comments are made for -.-
@tagakumpas Agreed he is a huge part of what makes the King's Singers so unique for me. Also just a technicality, he's a first tenor not a soprano :) that said however, he could sing the pants off any soprano I know.
@MRSCrhistoferIngle Oh I'm aware of that, I just wanted to make the distinction between the voices for those who are not really familiar with the "technicalities" since the guy who sings the "alto" part is also "technically" a counter tenor unless I'm mistaken.
I love this song and I love the Kings Singers, but I hate the way their accent plays on this song. I think they forgot that this is an AMERICAN folk song. As a singer I only take on songs that I know I have the capacity to sing. The same is true of choirs and ensembles. When a choir I'm in has issues with a particular style, the director throws those songs out. The King's Singers have a great sound harmonically here but they aren't suited for old American gospel.
Very talented gentlemen, but they would have been better sticking with their natural accents. To try and force an American /semi-southern accent on a british gentlman is almost a crime. In addition , as a southern American , it sounds terribly "canned" and artificial. BUT , I have to give them extreme respect for the harmony and effort.
@Tarponhuntr Too bad nobody cares. Music cannot be faked. There's no such thing as fake music. When you whistle a tune, you're making music. These guys are very good and flawless musicians. No point comparing accents and other bullshit. Just enjoy the music, bro!
I love this arrangement/video. The only thing I wish they would do is add the American "R" in wear. We Americans take the R away if doing choral music but this is folk. But anyway. This is one of my favorite videos on youtube. Thanks for uploading it :)
@thisperfectworld I disagree. I like Paul Phoenix much better as a tenor than his predecessor, and I like this particular group of King's Singers the best of their lineups.
These guys are obviously very talented but they're singing way too fast for this song and it's weird to hear a bunch of white British men singing a song written by American slaves. Their accents bleed through a little bit every now and then and it throws me off.
i feel like they're missing the point of the song, the depth and feeling needed to sing this just can't be done at this speed. the beautiful harmonies are lost because of it. A fabulous group, but they are a little too far out of their element with this one.
@fiddlemediddle I honestly feel like a soulful highschool group can perform this better then the King Singers. That's not to say they aren't in-fucking-credible...But this is one of the only misses I have ever heard from the Kings Signers. It just feels way to proper and refined when its a soulful black prayer piece.
I've been a fan of this group since almost forever. There are now different singers than what were there, bu they still are fantastic! The counter-tenor (high voice) is stupendous!!
this was a cool arangement. shaky at the beginning haha, but what would you expect of brits singing american gospel? god these guys blend so well, what a performance!
I absolutely adore the king's singers but this wasn't one of their best pieces. they kinda made the vowels too pure. comin from a southern vocal major they shoulda used a lil dialect.
Christ, literally, can some get this right? It's "Down in the Valley..." This is the Cohen Bros version from a movie adapted because the traditional lyrics didn't match the scene. God knows, this is a fine example to think about regarding the recordings of a bunch apostles writing about Jesus Christ's life 100 years after the fact. The damn song has been recorded incorrectly on multiple continents and the Cohen Bros movie is less than a decade old.
@MrApples6 Does it matter? It's not about the words, but the message. I think "river" fits, as it was at the river that Christ was baptised, ad the river (Jordan) plays a large part in a lot of Christian songs. No need to get so upset over a single word change. It's just a song...a very beautiful song.
And this isn't the only song in the movie that had the words changed either. Come to think of it...I think all the songs were different from their original versions, lol.
