It's starting to look like the death penalty is more of a motivating factor in murder than a deterrent. I would guess that when a person is ready to murder they don't care about the death penalty anymore and may in fact welcome such an end being in the miserable mental state they are likely in and have been in for years/decades excluding some crimes of passion or other such spontaneous thanatocidal euphemisms.
I think what was meant by Mitt's father-in-law's posthumous conversion to Mormonism was referring to his temple work being done.
