I am Bulgarian and I can say this - Bulgaria allied Germany in the first world war and then in the second world war as well and we are always the bad guys in the eyes of the Allies. But I believe, that every nation had good reasons for joining the fightings. So we have to consider the facts first. There are many Nazi crimes, but consider the crimes of the Allies too - the bombing of the old cities of Dresden and Sofia, consider Hiroshima and Nagasaki and many more!
So what was the good reason that Bulgaria allied with Germany? The Nazis wanted world domination and they were willing to do anything to get it Resulted in over 50 million deaths during ww2. When it comes to war there is no such thing as "Rules of engagement" it's kill or be killed. Dropping bombs on German cities brought home the consequences to the citizens of Germany for starting a war. The Nazis were one of the most ruthless regimes in history if you joined em you got what you deserved.

@clsteele there was a time that Hitler could have been stopped the German people did not do it. If a few people in that country could see what was happening why couldn't the rest. It was because they did not want to do anything. Hitler was very good at playing cards by bluffing. He took the gamble that no one would try and stop him and they didn't . Then it got to the point as you say they were afraid to try and stop him. He did the same with other European countries and got away with it.

@clsteele Also to name a few others England when Cromwell took over and Spain and Ireland and Cuba and China all booted out the Government/Royalty. There were others but they don't come to mind off hand. In the case of Germany they were all to happy at the beginning because they had work and didn't heed the warning signs of what was happening until it was too late. However their Army Generals were not part of the Nazis and they could have done something about it. They chose to follow orders.

But there needs to be a leader and that has to come from within the Germans had their Generals a few of which made a half assed attempt to get rid of Hitler well into the war. The German army was powerful enough to do it on its own all it needed was a leader but they were enjoying the power brought to them by Hitler.

@clsteele the USSR did help China Communists it was very little and Cuba did it on its own they had no affiliation with the USSR at that time. USSR help came when Castro and the US had a falling out shortly after the rebellion was over. All I am saying is most German people saw what was happening and sat back and did nothing they were warned by those against the Nazi party and payed no attention. They got what they deserved in my opinion for backing one of the most ruthless parties in history

@clsteele Well the SS did have some fighting battalions also they had infantry and Panzer divisions made up of the Hitler youth and seasoned veterans. They were noted for their war crimes and some brought to trial after the war. My dad told me they were up against the 12 SS at one point and came across 5 of their boys in a ditch with their hands tied and a bullet hole in the back of their heads. Well one of the most powerful country's in the world was formed through rebellion the USA.

@clsteele May dad was in WW2 and at one point he was involved in the liberation of one of the Nazi concentration camps. Now the common Germans said they did not know what the Nazis were doing to the Jews. My dad said he could smell the burning of human bodies a couple of miles away from the camp. anyone in the area would have to know. No one knew yeah and when the war ended there were no Nazis. Funny a whole country of Innocent people.

The German people at that time have to accept responsibilty were the Nazis not Germans. My father fought in WW2 and he told me after the war when he was in Germany no one would admit they were a Nazi it was like the Nazi's never existed. A German farmer may not have wanted to go to war but left it too late.

@686204 That's not true - Hitler even had rules of engagement - including not using Sarin or Tabun both of which only the Germans had invented - it would have cost so many more lives if they had used them - and yes they had them weaponized before D-day. There were lots of other "rules" in dealing with Western Allies but not so much in dealing with the Soviets, although they didn't use their nerve gases on them either, not even when they knew kaput uber alles.
@hris89it I'm curious at the level of history taught in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian government pursued the most opportunist path open to them, under German pressure with designs on the Balkan front. Bulgaria had only self-serving reasons for joining with Germany, which is not unique, but gave such limited assistance as to only case trouble by their complicity. In terms of actual "effective" allies? None that I am aware of. Italy was really more of a liability than an asset. Ultimately Italy was nothing more than a manpower drain for German's already thinly stretched & rapidly depleting reserves. As for Japan, together the 2 didn't collaborate on even a single coordinated attack. Had the 2 been in collusion & simultaneously attacked USSR, they may have tied up USSR's Siberian forces which were crucial to their counter attack outside Moscow. ;^{}

Your description of Italy doesn't make any sense either, how can an additional force be a drain of manpower? Africa, with only 50'000 men Britain was able to defeat 500,000 Italians, the Battle of Taranto never took place, & Hitler wasn't forced to send German forces to Italy to defend it. @theROFLpanda For the first two years of the war Russia (USSR) was in the side if the Nazis. If it were not for Russia's support Hitler would never have invaded Poland. While gallant Britain and France were standing up against the Nazi hoards Russia was invading and occupying the Baltic states
@aufstand1848 I don't think anyone would say countries enter war selflessly, but the person was trying to defend the actions of Bulgaria as being the same as Allied nations, and became a joke. France and Britain entered the war to defend Poland, not purely because they loved the nation, but because they had given too much away without a fight. An intervation in Italian North Africa in the 20s might have stopped everything. Hindsight. Gaining from war and surviving it are different.

I seldom hear anything about how France/UK declared war on Germany for attacking Poland, but said nothing when the USSR did the same thing! Actually I read somewhere the Allies contemplated intervening against the USSR. What an unmitigated disaster THAT would have been, eh? France & UK vs Germany AND USSR? The USA would not have helped a totally lost cause. They would have needed everything to fight Japan & maybe Germany, had Japan still attacked the US. The world would be different place.
@gjc82071 I think this is the best post on here, although one thing I disagree with is that the reason America would not have helped the UK was because they would have needed all their resources to fight Japan. The attack on America was wild and misguided, America had almost limitless resources to draw upon and kept Japan at arms reach with fairly small uses of force. I belive the British plan to attack Russia first came up in Neville's time and wasn't brought back until near the end of the war
Brtish behavior was rather inconsistent with an active defense of its Empire. Until the very last, successive Prime Minister negotiated and appeased Hitler. They chose the woest possible time and place to declare war - supporting an ally they could not reach, and against an enemy they could not yet attack.
@sukneh The Polish and the Czechs were not part of the Briitsh Empire. In fact, the British Empire had no claims on mainland Europe during WWII, except the traditional port of Gibraltar. The Brits lacked effective armor @ the start of WW2. Ironic considering the pioneered armored tactics (B. H. Liddell Hart, J. F. C. Fuller), invented Self-propelled artillery (the Birch gun) the Experimental Mechanized Force (disbanded '28) & the 1927 Salisbury Plains maneuvers. UK armor was obsolete at wars start. A Bren Gun Carrier was no match for a 38t/Pzkf. They were elated @ receiving US tanks & despised their own. "A Valentine will let you down, a Grant (M3) will see you through".
@gjc82071 Part of the problem is that their armor doctrine conceived of two different roles for tanks - Infantry support and breakthrough/pursuit. They built a different tank type for each. The "I" tank was the Matilda - slow and some what undergunned, but hard to destroy. The Valentine was fast and and maneuverable - but was light on armor. The US built one tank to do both - the M4. I am English and the English and Americans did nothing compared the the russians who made the biggest sacrafice. We were only fighting a tiny persentage of Nazi troops while most were in the east fighting Russia. Plus who is the little nazi kid? This is a great song.
Not really true, after winning it's own battle, Britain went on to fight in every theatre of war, if Britain hadn't held out we'd have not been able to keep Russia supplied with food and munitions, Russia have the north atlantic fleet who risked there lives daily to thank.

This is yet another song that was very popular in Britian at the time the Second World War broke out. Amazingly on evening of the day war was declared between Britain and Germany on Sunday 3 September 1939 the pubs of England were packed out and in the dance halls men and women danced merrily as this tune was played by the bands/orchestras. In some cases the dancers mocked and mimicked the Nazi salute as they attempted to mockingly incorporate the Nazi goosestepping into their dancing.

Make no mistake, it was Gen. Douglas McArthur and Sir Winston Churchill P.M. That put forth marching on through U.S.S.R. when Germany was defeated. In hindsight this should have been done but after such a long war people wanted peace. This idea was the ultimately defeated.

This song was written with intent. It gave the Brits courage to face the "imaginot" line, so it gave the soldiers and ther families back home the feeling of "Well there is nothing to fear, be positive and we will turn this LINE into a washing line. Today its still a "pick me up" song in the morning like a cup of tea. Hey its just music and a very fine composition it is. Listening to the song (instumental if you must) with a cuppa tea. The Siegfried Line was a defence system stretching more than 630 km with bunkers, tunnels and tank traps. It went from Kleve on the border with the Netherlands, along the western border of the old German Empire as far as the town of Weil am Rhein on the border to Switzerland. Adolf Hitler planned the line from 1936 and had it built between 1938 and 1940. This was after the Nazis had broken the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Treaties by remilitarizing the Rhineland in 1936

@Waffel22 If by 'here' you mean, when Dunkirk was taken by the Germans at the end of a rear guard action following the evaction of British soldiers after the complete collapse of the French army, one of the largest in the world at that time, then 'Yes'/ If by 'here' you mean "at the Siegfried line" then the answer would be no, due to the implosion of French military resistance.

I am Bulgarian and I can say this - Bulgaria allied Germany in the first world war and then in the second world war as well and we are always the bad guys in the eyes of the Allies. But I believe, that every nation had good reasons for joining the fightings. So we have to consider the facts first. There are many Nazi crimes, but consider the crimes of the Allies too - the bombing of the old cities of Dresden and Sofia, consider Hiroshima and Nagasaki and many more!

So what was the good reason that Bulgaria allied with Germany? The Nazis wanted world domination and they were willing to do anything to get it Resulted in over 50 million deaths during ww2. When it comes to war there is no such thing as "Rules of engagement" it's kill or be killed. Dropping bombs on German cities brought home the consequences to the citizens of Germany for starting a war. The Nazis were one of the most ruthless regimes in history if you joined em you got what you deserved.

@clsteele there was a time that Hitler could have been stopped the German people did not do it. If a few people in that country could see what was happening why couldn't the rest. It was because they did not want to do anything. Hitler was very good at playing cards by bluffing. He took the gamble that no one would try and stop him and they didn't . Then it got to the point as you say they were afraid to try and stop him. He did the same with other European countries and got away with it.

In the case of Germany they were all to happy at the beginning because they had work and didn't heed the warning signs of what was happening until it was too late. However their Army Generals were not part of the Nazis and they could have done something about it. They chose to follow orders.

But there needs to be a leader and that has to come from within the Germans had their Generals a few of which made a half assed attempt to get rid of Hitler well into the war. The German army was powerful enough to do it on its own all it needed was a leader but they were enjoying the power brought to them by Hitler.

@clsteele the USSR did help China Communists it was very little and Cuba did it on its own they had no affiliation with the USSR at that time. USSR help came when Castro and the US had a falling out shortly after the rebellion was over. All I am saying is most German people saw what was happening and sat back and did nothing they were warned by those against the Nazi party and payed no attention. They got what they deserved in my opinion for backing one of the most ruthless parties in history

@clsteele Well the SS did have some fighting battalions also they had infantry and Panzer divisions made up of the Hitler youth and seasoned veterans. They were noted for their war crimes and some brought to trial after the war. My dad told me they were up against the 12 SS at one point and came across 5 of their boys in a ditch with their hands tied and a bullet hole in the back of their heads. Well one of the most powerful country's in the world was formed through rebellion the USA.

@clsteele May dad was in WW2 and at one point he was involved in the liberation of one of the Nazi concentration camps. Now the common Germans said they did not know what the Nazis were doing to the Jews. My dad said he could smell the burning of human bodies a couple of miles away from the camp. anyone in the area would have to know. No one knew yeah and when the war ended there were no Nazis. Funny a whole country of Innocent people.

It's not like we wanted to ally with the Nazis, the country wasn't too well after WW I and didn't want to participate... we entered the war because the germans settled 500 000 soldiers on our border .. what could we do ? Let them destroy our motherland ... It's also true that Bulgaria didn't send the jewish minority to death in the concentration camps. And it's true that Bulgaria is the only country from the pact that refused to send army to Stalingrad... the others did : )

The German people at that time have to accept responsibilty were the Nazis not Germans. My father fought in WW2 and he told me after the war when he was in Germany no one would admit they were a Nazi it was like the Nazi's never existed. A German farmer may not have wanted to go to war but left it too late.

@686204 That's not true - Hitler even had rules of engagement - including not using Sarin or Tabun both of which only the Germans had invented - it would have cost so many more lives if they had used them - and yes they had them weaponized before D-day. There were lots of other "rules" in dealing with Western Allies but not so much in dealing with the Soviets, although they didn't use their nerve gases on them either, not even when they knew kaput uber alles.

@hris89it I'm curious at the level of history taught in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian government pursued the most opportunist path open to them, under German pressure with designs on the Balkan front. Bulgaria had only self-serving reasons for joining with Germany, which is not unique, but gave such limited assistance as to only case trouble by their complicity. In terms of actual "effective" allies? None that I am aware of. Italy was really more of a liability than an asset. Ultimately Italy was nothing more than a manpower drain for German's already thinly stretched & rapidly depleting reserves. As for Japan, together the 2 didn't collaborate on even a single coordinated attack. Had the 2 been in collusion & simultaneously attacked USSR, they may have tied up USSR's Siberian forces which were crucial to their counter attack outside Moscow. ;^{}

Africa, with only 50'000 men Britain was able to defeat 500,000 Italians, the Battle of Taranto never took place, & Hitler wasn't forced to send German forces to Italy to defend it. @aufstand1848 I don't think anyone would say countries enter war selflessly, but the person was trying to defend the actions of Bulgaria as being the same as Allied nations, and became a joke. France and Britain entered the war to defend Poland, not purely because they loved the nation, but because they had given too much away without a fight. An intervation in Italian North Africa in the 20s might have stopped everything. Hindsight. Gaining from war and surviving it are different.

I seldom hear anything about how France/UK declared war on Germany for attacking Poland, but said nothing when the USSR did the same thing! Actually I read somewhere the Allies contemplated intervening against the USSR. What an unmitigated disaster THAT would have been, eh? France & UK vs Germany AND USSR? The USA would not have helped a totally lost cause. They would have needed everything to fight Japan & maybe Germany, had Japan still attacked the US. The world would be different place.

The attack on America was wild and misguided, America had almost limitless resources to draw upon and kept Japan at arms reach with fairly small uses of force. I belive the British plan to attack Russia first came up in Neville's time and wasn't brought back until near the end of the war

The Brits lacked effective armor @ the start of WW2. Ironic considering the pioneered armored tactics (B. H. Liddell Hart, J. F. C. Fuller), invented Self-propelled artillery (the Birch gun) the Experimental Mechanized Force (disbanded '28) & the 1927 Salisbury Plains maneuvers. UK armor was obsolete at wars start. A Bren Gun Carrier was no match for a 38t/Pzkf. They were elated @ receiving US tanks & despised their own. "A Valentine will let you down, a Grant (M3) will see you through".

@gjc82071 Part of the problem is that their armor doctrine conceived of two different roles for tanks - Infantry support and breakthrough/pursuit. They built a different tank type for each. The "I" tank was the Matilda - slow and some what undergunned, but hard to destroy. The Valentine was fast and and maneuverable - but was light on armor. The US built one tank to do both - the M4. The Grant was a copy of the French 'Char B' which was superior to any German AFV in 1940.
