I've been on a Harry Potter message board since I was 15 and met half my friends there. It took a while for the people in my environment to get used to it, but now my loved ones aren't suprised anymore. They all know I met friends through the Internet. It's cool. Lucky for me, a bunch of them actually live in my country so I meet up with them IRL. It's very nice, and since I know most of them for more than 5 years, I think of them as ''friends'', just like you said.

My friends think it is weird that I have "internet" friends. But I met one of my best friends via twitter. And we talk EVERY day. Even if she lives 13hours away. My RL friends just are not as cool as my internet friends. And one day I WILL meet my internet friends, because they're awesome!
I TOTALLY agree.... My mom always worries about how I need to be safe on the internet and how I know they aren't creepy pedos. She sees too many movies, and movies are MEANT to over-exagerate. I have video chatted with them and I know they are real people, but I can't tell my mom because she will freak out. -_- I have to make up an excuse of how I found a starkid in my town, I need to say we bumped into each other downtown and started talking... not that I wanted to meet up with her :/

I find it weird when people find it weird that having internet friends is a thing. People are smarter nowadays (well, hopefully most :P), and I think you'd be able to tell if a person was legit or not based on the fact that you communicate with them on every social network out there.
