This whole show (it was a rehearsal broadcast on tv) was fantastic. Most bands in rock and roll can't come close to the musicianship Frank's bands had.
hi, Mongo. well. had a bad day? underwear a bit too tight? (you squirm a lot) you certainly would seem a trice full of a peculiarly vicious & rancid species of bile, isn't it? perhaps a more mellow re-listen to the Maestro's sentiments (he's got you in a little white box that can sell up town): "i am your cracks & slots. . .". late again, Princess . . . tighten up/dummy up or have a nice demise. do us all a favour. Zappa shat you for breakfast
According to Google Translate: I am the dirt under your rollers I am your dirty secret And lost metal money I am your crack I am your cracks and slots I am the author of all wheels And damask piping I am the Chrome Dinette I am the Chrome Dinette I am eggs of all kinds I am all days and nights I am all days and nights I'm here And you are my sofa I'm here And you are my sofa I'm here And you are my sofa
For those of u that say that zappa had no thing such a good voice let me tell u this:
he had been agressed in a concert by a stupid "fan" and he felt out off the stage. he was very bad suffered several concusions and lost 1/3 of his voice. this was in 1971 and he did what he did after that year... 1 of the best musicians ever lived!
re the singing. Frank is way off on this, but I got the feeling from the intro that he was a bit insecure about his German and I think that affected his performance. That said, Frank was never a vocal powerhouse, but his voice had something that tons of technically great singers don't have, and that's character.

@cor916 Well sung by a man who can`t sing then, eh? Give me a break. He just don`t have the register. He`s pragmatic. Also remember Frank`s definition of music.
You can't really read, or can you? All I was saying is that Frank can't sing. And guess what, he can't. But that doesn't make him less of a fantastistic musician. And there you go telling us (or me) that he hasn't "the register". Oh really? Thank you for letting me know.
Oh, by the way, you call Zappa 'pragmatic" when it comes to his singing. No buddy, it's satire...
@cor916 OK, Frank can`t sing. I agreed. But how could he sing his own music during three decades? In case you didn`t know, his music is complex, very hard to perform. This made him a multi millionare. He build a whole imperium cause he couldn`t sing. Somehow his vocal had to fit his music. Pragmatic? or Satire.
"Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is the best."

Und du bist mein Sofa

"Zappa is the best musician, the best composer! "
Better than classical composers like Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Mozart, or Stravinsky, or modern composers like Miles Davis or Philip Glass? I just don't see it.
Zappa is the best composer for me, I love his music. I believe you have your own favourites.
All those names are excellent in the kind of music they make.

I first heard Zappa in a squat in Beckum, Germany 1979 when I was 17. It was early in the morning, sleeping bags and freaks all over the place, the smell of fresh coffee and weed woke me up as someone turned up Tities and Beer and I could not believe my ears.
The rest of the day was spent listing to Live in New York (1974)

anyone out there please feel free to correct me on the lyrics. I think I'm close but not sure.

rleary1 2 years ago
rleary1 2 years ago
The translation is quite okay..
I suggest some corrections:
"Down your cracks" doesn't appear in the lyrics.
"Ich bin deine Ritze" is sung twice.
So it would be something like
"I am your crack (singular)
I am your crack and crannies"
(of course referring to orifices,
I guess crack and cranny can
be understood that way)
Gumm1pupp3 2 years ago
"Eggs of persuasion" is a wrong translation.
"Eier aller Arten" would be "Eggs of all kinds"
or rather "Balls of all kinds", because "Eier"
can mean testicles in German.
And it's "damask pipings". I don't understand
the meaning of "Damast Paspeln", but I
guess that would be the best translation.
Gumm1pupp3 2 years ago
Thanks for all of your help! I did notice after Frank states his phrase (in German) he repeats in English at 2:32 "that's right, Eggs of all pursuasions.." which knowing his sense of humor he literally meant "balls of all kinds" as you state probably referring to all of the males over the years sitting on that sofa. The triplet arpeggio: so cheesy, yet so sublime. That's why Zappa isn't the Stephen Foster, the Scott Joplin, the Irving Berlin of our day.
I was in a distant country and a Japanese civil engineer regaled us with Stephen Foster a capella.
We need the family to permit new lyrics. This melody can inspire!
