I want to thank you for this beautiful Video and inspiring hymn. Orthodoxy and its liturgy will remain the only and true source of Christianity. It is a faith that will never end. There is no Christianity without the Orthodox faith and all the faith's of Christianity realize this. I'm a follower of the Greek Melkite Catholic faith but our liturgy, liturgy books and religious inheritance all come from the Orthodox faith. I will always look up to Orthodoxy for faith and theological knowledge.

Heaven exists. Unfortunately, there is also hell. From what you have written, it is quite obvious that for the moment you made your choice. Though, you have some time to change your attitude towards God, yourself and the others. You are free to have whatever system of beliefs you want, but this does not mean that they reflect the reality. If you prefer to live in a virtual world it's only your choice. But it doesn't have to be like that.
If you say you are prefectly happy being away from God, I really doubt it. Not even the fallen angels are happy with that, but they are too proud to admit and this is way they do not turn back to God. I do not know your past, but there is certainly something there that made you think and feel the way you feel now. You might want to have a look into your past and see what made you be the person you are now.
There could be people that hurt you and you decided to cope with that by asking for more pain and think that this is the way happines must be like. Unfortunately, in this world there is a lot of sadness, but it is the world we created by staying away from God. God respects our freedom of choice and He will not interfere with our lives if we do not want Him to do so. So, it's only up to us. We cannot change the whole world, but we can definetely take a decission to change ourselves.

We as believers know that there are no atheists. The word atheist comes from the Greek a-teos, which means "without God". Without God, nobody could even exist. But there are people who love God and what to be as close as possible to Him, and there are people that for some reason do not know how much God lives us, and stay away from him, and there are people that want to be as far as possible from God, and which are very unhappy people.

We ask the saints to pray to God on our behalf... we do the same to Mary... we ask her to pray to God for us. For even when Christ was on Earth He listened to his mother... this is why we pray to Mary.

Christ did not deny this like people think when he said "Blessed rather are they that hear the word of God and obey it"... The Orthodox pray to Mary and ask her to intercede before Christ for us. One of the commandments is "honor your father and mother"... and no one did this greater than Christ himself. In the wedding of Cana Mary told Christ to help the family because they were out of wine and he said "My time has not come yet" but she told the servants to listen and do whatever Christ told them. Christ, Himself, listened to his mother!

I think you might be confusing the 'ideas' of christianity with the practices of its most evil 'adherents'. Christians are human. They are not all angels. In truth, very few christians are close to the real sense of being christian. As for science, it does not contradict theology (and vice versa). Science and theology give answers to different questions (at least the real christian theology, not that propagated by fundamentalist groups).

@vagos2006 as a turkish native i studied ancient greek language and literature. I truly believe the Greek orthodox religion is embellished with the profound history of Hellas which dates back Bc 5000's. I participated many Greek feasts held at Ayastefanos church in Yesilkoy , istanbul. Everytime i was there it gave chills on my spine. The tinge i had from that time still lingers in my life. I would root for the Greek Orthodox mysticism at all costs.

I'm not sure of the numbers. But during the socialist regime, the number of christians in general in russia fell dramatically due to the state's official atheism. People kept christianity, but didin't express it oficially due to eventual persecutions, that's why the numbers were so low.
After the fall of communism, the number of christians just sprang upwards.

During his reign Lenin said that he will even kill 90% of the population in any given country as long as his party gains control.

Vagos, it's probably very stupid, but what does it mean "plagal 1st tone" ("1st tone heptatonic", "plagal of 4th tone", etc.)? Is it an ancient Greek equivalent to say, G major or D minor in Western scales? I'm not Orthodox and I haven't learnt these things... :)
baldwalrus, the short version is that there are eight modes, or tones: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Plagal 1st, Plagal 2nd, Grave (Plagal 3rd), and Plagal 4th. They each fall into one of 4 scale sets: enharmonic, diatonic, soft chromatic, and hard chromatic. The different modes are based on the modes of ancient Greek music.
This is perhaps one of my most favorite hymns because it reminds us of the Triune God and the many ways in which humanity can think about how God loves us. Maybe I'm wrong, but when I listen to it, I begin to think about the Trinity in a way I typically dont.
Terirem is a meaningless word, often used for extended and improvised passages by the soloist. It draws out the song so as to evoke a meditative or almost ecstatic atmosphere.
Other nonsense words, like 'ananes', are used to evoke the tone of the hymn and tune the choir.

It is not so improbable as an explanation Vonbiron. Terirem refers to the "language of the angels", which itself relates somehow to the mystic glossolalia. Just don't think that this word has any secret undeciphered meaning; take it as a symbol, a resemblance or a reminder.

I want to thank you for this beautiful Video and inspiring hymn. Orthodoxy and its liturgy will remain the only and true source of Christianity. It is a faith that will never end. There is no Christianity without the Orthodox faith and all the faith's of Christianity realize this. I'm a follower of the Greek Melkite Catholic faith but our liturgy, liturgy books and religious inheritance all come from the Orthodox faith. I will always look up to Orthodoxy for faith and theological knowledge.

Though, you have some time to change your attitude towards God, yourself and the others. You are free to have whatever system of beliefs you want, but this does not mean that they reflect the reality. If you prefer to live in a virtual world it's only your choice. But it doesn't have to be like that.

If you say you are prefectly happy being away from God, I really doubt it. Not even the fallen angels are happy with that, but they are too proud to admit and this is way they do not turn back to God. I do not know your past, but there is certainly something there that made you think and feel the way you feel now. You might want to have a look into your past and see what made you be the person you are now.

There could be people that hurt you and you decided to cope with that by asking for more pain and think that this is the way happines must be like. Unfortunately, in this world there is a lot of sadness, but it is the world we created by staying away from God. God respects our freedom of choice and He will not interfere with our lives if we do not want Him to do so. So, it's only up to us. We cannot change the whole world, but we can definetely take a decission to change ourselves.

We as believers know that there are no atheists. The word atheist comes from the Greek a-teos, which means "without God". Without God, nobody could even exist. But there are people who love God and what to be as close as possible to Him, and there are people that for some reason do not know how much God lives us, and stay away from him, and there are people that want to be as far as possible from God, and which are very unhappy people.

Did not Christ say "He who believes in me shall not die but have life eternal?" The saints are indeed living in Heaven worshiping God unceasingly and praying on our behalf. We ask the saints to pray to God on our behalf... we do the same to Mary... we ask her to pray to God for us. For even when Christ was on Earth He listened to his mother... this is why we pray to Mary.

Christ did not deny this like people think when he said "Blessed rather are they that hear the word of God and obey it"... He, in fact, CONFIRMED the woman's statement because NO ONE heard the word of God and observed it like Mary did the Angel Gabrielle came to her and told her she would bear Christ and she replied, "let it be to me according to your word."

The Orthodox pray to Mary and ask her to intercede before Christ for us. One of the commandments is "honor your father and mother"... and no one did this greater than Christ himself. In the wedding of Cana Mary told Christ to help the family because they were out of wine and he said "My time has not come yet" but she told the servants to listen and do whatever Christ told them. Christ, Himself, listened to his mother!

The Orthodox venerate the person in the icon, not the icon itself. It is not worshiping of the icon itself, for we only worship God. St. John of Damascus says icons are "opened books to remind us of God." He also references in the scripture where veneration is given to the rod of Aaron, the jar of manna, and holy places like Mt. Sanai or Golgotha.

I think you might be confusing the 'ideas' of christianity with the practices of its most evil 'adherents'. Christians are human. They are not all angels. In truth, very few christians are close to the real sense of being christian. As for science, it does not contradict theology (and vice versa). Science and theology give answers to different questions (at least the real christian theology, not that propagated by fundamentalist groups).

True. That space 'reserved' for "god" is now taken over by things like money, political ideologies, technological advances or simple egos, according to each human. God is not confined in a room, in any space or any society. @vagos2006 as a turkish native i studied ancient greek language and literature. I truly believe the Greek orthodox religion is embellished with the profound history of Hellas which dates back Bc 5000's. I participated many Greek feasts held at Ayastefanos church in Yesilkoy , istanbul. Everytime i was there it gave chills on my spine. The tinge i had from that time still lingers in my life. I would root for the Greek Orthodox mysticism at all costs.

I'm not sure of the numbers. But during the socialist regime, the number of christians in general in russia fell dramatically due to the state's official atheism. People kept christianity, but didin't express it oficially due to eventual persecutions, that's why the numbers were so low.
After the fall of communism, the number of christians just sprang upwards.

To put it in perspective, all Western scales are enharmonic in nature; the other 3 scale types cannot be accurately represented on, say, a piano because of their microtonal differences from the enharmonic scale.
However, I am no professor of Byzantine music, simply a student. You could find better explanations, I am sure :)

Vagos, it's probably very stupid, but what does it mean "plagal 1st tone" ("1st tone heptatonic", "plagal of 4th tone", etc.)? Is it an ancient Greek equivalent to say, G major or D minor in Western scales? I'm not Orthodox and I haven't learnt these things... :)

baldwalrus, the short version is that there are eight modes, or tones: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Plagal 1st, Plagal 2nd, Grave (Plagal 3rd), and Plagal 4th. They each fall into one of 4 scale sets: enharmonic, diatonic, soft chromatic, and hard chromatic. The different modes are based on the modes of ancient Greek music.

This is perhaps one of my most favorite hymns because it reminds us of the Triune God and the many ways in which humanity can think about how God loves us. Maybe I'm wrong, but when I listen to it, I begin to think about the Trinity in a way I typically dont.

Terirem is a meaningless word, often used for extended and improvised passages by the soloist. It draws out the song so as to evoke a meditative or almost ecstatic atmosphere.
Other nonsense words, like 'ananes', are used to evoke the tone of the hymn and tune the choir.

Thanks for the explanation of "terirem". Someone told me it evokes the mystic "glossolalia" as in St. Paul's epistle to Corinthians, but I doubted that explanation as improbable.

It is not so improbable as an explanation Vonbiron. Terirem refers to the "language of the angels", which itself relates somehow to the mystic glossolalia. Just don't think that this word has any secret undeciphered meaning; take it as a symbol, a resemblance or a reminder.
