Update: Find My iPhone is free now. All you need is an Apple ID (the email address you use for iTunes)
Dropbox is made of WIN! So much better than iDisk. Refer your friends and get up to 10GB. I keep documents on all three of my Macs synced with it. I share bigass files with it. Plus, I add notes from Droptext on my iPhone that I can later view on my computers.
The only MobileMe feature I don't know how to replicate for free is Back to My Mac. But I'm sure there is a way. Anyone care to share?
That's 2GB to start, but an additional 250MB for every friend you refer - up to 10GB. I referred a bunch of people and it didn't take long for me to reach 10GB. That limit may get raised in the future.
Also, keep in mind that with MobileMe you will probably use half of your 20GB for your email anyway, so it's not much different than Gmail + Dropbox. What would you rather do, refer some friends or pay 99 bucks a year?
@FurtureSims Yes, just simply set iWeb to save your website to a folder in the Public folder of Dropbox. Then just point any domain, even a free one to the public link of the index.html file.
you didn't show how to set up Gmail within the Mail app. the average person's gonna know there's plenty of free webmail sites out there. to make it more like the mobile me experience it needs to have an imap service that can be added to Mail.
You've failed to replace all the coolest of MobileMe--find my iPhone, back to my Mac, remote router access (which includes access to hard drives plugged into an airport extreme, for example), and the pristine photo sharing of MobileMe gallery-- and the feature you have replaced, you've only replaced with ten percent of the storage given to you by MobileMe. Calling this a free MobileMe replacement is a stretch. In order to get the feature of MobileMe, you need your own server. Plain and simple.
What the Hell Man.. When I go there, to that site, it says it doesn't support my iPhone.. This is just Lame.. Thanks for the Explaining and stuff, But won't work for me, I got a iPhone 3G, Version 4.1, Should work IMO..?
Why can't Apple or anyone release a simple program that allows me to save contacts to an external HDD? Why is everyone releasing programs that saves these to a server somewhere else?
why is the title misleading??? is says mobileme "REPLACEMENT". so of course its not mobileme!!! by the way.. why did we wanna click exchange in appose to gmail???
Mobile me gives you 20gb dropbox is ok but very buggy on iPhone and gives only gives 2gb of storage I'd like apple to make mobile me free for their customers it would only make their amazing products alot better
Look - your videos are instructive and interesting, but count the number of times you say "you guys." It becomes so freaking annoying I want to tear off my earlobes and pour paraffin in the holes. Stop it, already! Just say "do this now," and "now you want to type x." Please? Otherwise, um, thanks.
Hey Thanks Mab Works Great But How Do You Sync Calendar ive got it all on my ipod and stuff does it update automatically or do you have to go to that sync thing if you could get back to me that would be great thanks Joel
hey, how do you get the minimizing window to go in the back of your firefox at 1:47, mine goes on the right side of my dock... :( Thank you, nice vids!
@MacOSXTutorials12 I will say I found this video helpful and I sat here and set everything up on my phone step by step with you talking. However, Mr Alphabet up there is correct, the title is a little misleading. It doesn't say "Mobileme features" it says mobileme. So anyone looking to hack mobile me might be drawn to this video. That criticism aside, I will say good job on this and it helped me set up these things on my phone. P.S Love Dropbox! Discovered it thanks to you! :-)
Didn't know about that import contacts feature on Gmail! Very useful! And the Google calendar is not as good as MobileMe... just sayin. Great tips overall though. I would still like MobileMe though.

Use this link to get an extra 250MB as soon as you sign up to dropbox: db[dot]tt/21q7fPG (Change "[dot]" to ".") :-)

It turns out that Back to My Mac has a free alternative as well. Just Google "back to my mac free" and click on the Lifehacker article.
So MobileMe is basically useless. I've never understood the value of it, but now I really can't justify paying for it at all. Cheers.
