I hate what my ancestors did to the natives of this country (who are actually originally from Asia a long while ago). My mom's friend is a survivor of the residential school system and my friend is Meti, his father owns 2-3 businesses and one of them is First Nations and Meti cadet corps in PA, Saskatchewan. I live in Saskatoon, right near Wanaskewin, beautiful culture. There is still some racism towards Natives but it has really cut down and our country is improving a lot on what we did...

As a metis, I take great offense to this video. I have no idea what century you live in, but I was 7th grade we started learning about the residential schools,and in the 10th before I finished, and that was only becuase I stopped taking history. You over simplify the issue. Canadians know, and are ashamed of that treatment, especialy that it lasted until the 1970s. You left out how the citizens were kept in the dark on the issue, and that is common of many people who talk about res. schools
Exactly. Even the government didn't know what was going on in the schools until survivors came forth. There were countless attempts of health inspectors coming in and telling the schools "Oh, you need to give them more nutrition, they're malnutritioned." And they say they'll do it and they wont. When children were punished all they gave them was salt and water, to make it look like they were being fed. Canada had no clue this was going on, and as Steven Harper says, this will not happen again.

I was born in the early 60's and taken away from my family because my french mother left. My father who is native was actually thrown in jail for trying to get us back in the early 70's. My dutch adoptive family told us to never say we were native, because that was shameful to them. Only in the past 8 years have I come to know where I came from. It makes me sad to hear all those negative comments about being native. My ancestors deserve respect and that's all there is to it.

I hate what my ancestors did to the natives of this country (who are actually originally from Asia a long while ago). My mom's friend is a survivor of the residential school system and my friend is Meti, his father owns 2-3 businesses and one of them is First Nations and Meti cadet corps in PA, Saskatchewan. I live in Saskatoon, right near Wanaskewin, beautiful culture. There is still some racism towards Natives but it has really cut down and our country is improving a lot on what we did...

They have a plaza, many gas stations, smoke shops(of course). They are living fully. Not all, but a good portion of my rez, is well maintained. Alot of really nice homes are just recently built in the village, and theres alot outside of the village as well.

The assumptions that all Indians went to residential schools, all Christians are bad, and all the Indians were all mistreated is an all-out LIE!!

As a metis, I take great offense to this video. I have no idea what century you live in, but I was 7th grade we started learning about the residential schools,and in the 10th before I finished, and that was only becuase I stopped taking history. You over simplify the issue. Canadians know, and are ashamed of that treatment, especialy that it lasted until the 1970s. You left out how the citizens were kept in the dark on the issue, and that is common of many people who talk about res. schools

Exactly. Even the government didn't know what was going on in the schools until survivors came forth. There were countless attempts of health inspectors coming in and telling the schools "Oh, you need to give them more nutrition, they're malnutritioned." And they say they'll do it and they wont. When children were punished all they gave them was salt and water, to make it look like they were being fed. Canada had no clue this was going on, and as Steven Harper says, this will not happen again.

so you can say without a doubt that YOU KNOW how natives are treated? is this what school taught you? maybe your parents? or maybe you know from visiting the reserves first hand how they are treated and what their lives are like. Sorry for misunderstanding. I would love to come and experience your world for better or worse. I'm a firm believer (though many in my family are angry with my position) that there is so much that we as Canadians owe the Aboriginals. So If my ignorance has offended you I'm deeply sorry. I would love to learn more about both the culture, and what I can do to help the cause. As Kevin Annett said, there is no real way to be "Healed" but I would like to do what I can to reconcile the past.

u all should realize that canadian tax dollars go to natives so they can live with no work, racism is not accepted in most places nowadays and in canada theres nothing stopping u from getting an education and making better for yourselves, i know life can be hard but if the reserves are so bad then why stay on them? i have over 15 native friends from all over: red pheasant, sweetgrass, poundmaker, and mosquito and they love the reserve just cause its kinda like the countryside.

The government only respects them as far as they are legally bound to and not even then. When it looks good for media and to use their art then they pretend to care.
I feel great sadness that our nation is built on such a history.

We need to protect all Native American languages. They should all be official in their traditional areas. Even Euro-Americans and Afro-Americans should try to learn them. We should all learn Cree, Mohawk, Chepewyan, Dogrib, etc. All Native Americans should speak their languages with their children.

I was born in the early 60's and taken away from my family because my french mother left. My father who is native was actually thrown in jail for trying to get us back in the early 70's. My dutch adoptive family told us to never say we were native, because that was shameful to them. Only in the past 8 years have I come to know where I came from. It makes me sad to hear all those negative comments about being native. My ancestors deserve respect and that's all there is to it.
