The Uygurs are turkic central asian ethnicity, but the Hui are East Asian. The Hui were the descendents of arab merchants that first came to China at around 670AD to 700AD. Many of these Arabs settled down and converted locals, they also merried with the converted locals. The Hui has a population of around 10 millions which is around the same as the Uyghurs.

The Hui was originated as a muslim ethnic group at around 700AD, but the Uyghurs converted to Islam not until after 934AD.
