  • Awesome! I actually saw Zero Hour on TV late one night and recognized it was so similar to Airplane!

  • Not sure if joking or just stupid.

  • Kudos to the editing. Well done!

  • Funny, I have been quoting Airplane over half my life and never knew about Zero Hour, wow. Thx for post!

  • 7 people picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines

  • This makes it SO much more funny.

  • 2:20 Family guy made fun of this, now i finally get it...

  • It's exactly the same kind of movie

  • Plane Movie

  • druuuunk................uaaa

  • you know how i know airplane was a brilliant movie? i didn't even know it was a parody, and it still cracked me the f*#$ up.

  • The AIRPLANE producers bought the rights so they could make the parody.

  • This. is. blowing. my. mind.

  • Have you ever seen a grown man naked? WTF?!

  • This really just makes it that much better.

  • derp derp parody...

  • "it was a choice steak or fish" "yes, yes i remember i had lasagna" i dont know that was sooooooo hillarious

  • Calling it a remake really bothers me, but watching the two scenes together reminds me of how brilliant Airplane! was.

  • 2:16...classic:)

    always gets me

  • ....but nearly word for word???....Shame on you, Zuckers.

  • "you ever been in a turkish prison?"

  • sterling hayden as the chief (remember when Pacino shot him in the Godfather?)

  • If you've watched Airplane on DVD with commentary they admit that it's a spoof of Zero Hour and they bought the rights for it

  • It's definitely a remake, but a farcical remake. If it were just a spoof, they wouldn't have lifted so much dialogue from the original. It's brilliantly done, though.

I think it would have been even more effective had they filmed it in black and white, though...

  • Long live Leslie Nielsen.

  • 3 people are from Al Queda

  • @JESabourin At least they aren't douche bags who make these fucking stupid ass comments on every youtube video.

  • What is up with Julie Haggerty? There is something off about that broad.

  • Oh thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • Elaine always reminded me of Lorri Lambert, a co-worker from the paper mill I used to work at back in the 1980s.

  • Airplane was the best spoof ever made, with great acting.

  • @bIancoitaliano Airplane a spoof ? How do you mean ?

  • @BillyCaftdunt You know, comedy parody. Like Naked Gun, Imma Get You Sucka, Scary Movie, etc.

  • Its not a remake. It's a parody of lots of different movies and other events that people were familiar with at the time. Like Saturday Night Fever or the coffee commercial. Great video though. Saw them back to back on TCM.

  • They were planning a "Kentucky fried movie 2" & had set a video recorder to record late night T.V. commercials & when they played it back they found that the movie playing between the commercials was more comedically viable for parody then the commercials, that movie was zero hour.

  • Where's the sniffing glue?

  • Leslie Nielsen was really hillarious, he was a great actor... My prayers are with his loved ones...

  • 3:15

My favourite joke in the movie. i never understood it untill i was like 17 years old

  • What a pisser...

  • You got linked with the blog Exurban League in memoriam of Leslie Nielsen.

Thanks for the side-by-side. Surely it's nice to see what inspired his first great comedy.

  • @1manwalkingfreakshow Yes it is nice to see.

... and don't call me Shirley

  • Could someone do a video like this for the "A fistful of yen" skit from Kentucky Fried Movie and "Enter the Dragon"?

  • oh i love airplane

  • Brilliant!!!

  • People have a problem with calling this a remake? It's a comedic remake. It follows the script and shooting of Zero Hour! more closely than most straight remakes. It's not really a parody of Zero Hour, a mostly forgotten film, rather it uses the beats of the Zero Hour script to set up jokes and parodies of other things. Airplane! is actually the second remake of Zero Hour! which was originally a Canadian TV movie called Flight into Danger.

  • @monoceros4 That's how you show the ridiculousness of the original. As another example, Tina Fey's parodies of Sarah Palin were at their best when she simply repeated Palin's own statements. Airplane! wasn't just a parody, but was trying to point out how stupid the aircraft disaster film genre was.

  • @mzaf300 Then it should be hilarious with Obama and his teleprompter

  • yes airplane is the remake of zero hour it just put a lot of random scenes and sight gags

  • man-that sure sounds like R. Lee Ermey's voice on the radio in Bob Hays' flashback-is it/ does anyone know?

  • Comment removed

  • oh yeah-forgot to mention Dana Andrews as Ted Stryker-he was a HUGE star in the 40's-so was Linda Darnell-check out "My Darling Clementine" she was so beautiful-a goddess

  • Comment removed

  • "I want you to pour every light you have on that field" is another one-thx for posting-I have been telling people about this movie since I happened to be seitching channels one night back in the day and caught it on the late show, I couldnt believe what I was seeing

  • Linda Darnell was the most beautiful woman in the world in her time, ol' Sterling Hayden-read up on him-real-life he-man-ran away from home, went to sea, fought in the War-he was the cop gunned down by Michael Corleone in he Godfather, and Elroy "Crazy legs" Hirsch-great college and proffessional running back

  • Airplane is a parody of many movies, no remake

  • Yes if you seen Airplane at all....it's a spoof (parody) I love this movie...Been watching it since I could remember...Just like the new movies u probably watch such as : Scary Movie etc..etc.. They aslo make fun of other movies(Parodies) they DO NOT copy them...Anyway "flipflomas" Nice job with editing...great video quality....2 thumbs up from me keep up the good work

  • Its a completely different kind of movie. Altogether.

  • It's a completely different kind of movie.

  • It's a completely different kind of movie.

  • @MooseDesigner Its a completely different kind of movie.

  • @MooseDesigner Its a completely different kind of movie.

  • @MooseDesigner It's a completely different kind of movie.

  • I can only imagine how loud the laughter was in the world premiere's audience.

  • what does he say in zero hour in the seen that matches leslie nielsen saying " ijust want to wish you good luck and let you know were all counting on you"

  • @dawley84 He says good luck and finishes with "I'll keep your son with me." In Zero Hour, Striker and his ex-partner had a child together who was travelling with them. In Airplane, this was changed and there was no child character.

  • I love this movie. It's all about paying attention to what's happening in the background.

  • Maybe it's just a comedic remake, like Nick Cage's Wicker Man..

  • @Thrawn369 untentional comedy is still comedy

  • Cool! Thanks for the clip!

  • they bought the rights to the script.

  • Wow, I had no idea. That's what I get for being too young.

  • So the best way to make a parody movie is to completely rip off a public domain script.

  • Loved Dana Andrews! RIP

  • i was able to download a free copy of zero hour on a torrent site it,s a good movie ,,, i can dig it

  • wow, no way would they do that "seen a grown man naked" joke in the cockpit with the kid any more!

  • wtf I had no idea. Zucker/Abrams/Zucker respect -50%

  • Thank you! I knew that the rights were bought but have never seen the original.

    Nice job.

  • Wow !! I feel cheated. lol Great post.

  • This makes Airplane! even better :-D

  • I rate Airplane! as one of my top 5 movies of all time, and I'm amazed that, until now, I never knew about Zero Hour. This was fascinating. I absolutely LOVE You Tube, and I must say watching this video was one of the best times I ever had YT!!

  • @mudhens4ever I know post is a year old but I just had to answer it. I just saw Zero Hour myself for the first time too. The whole movie is now on You Tube and it's uninterrupted .

  • wish i could go into a cockpit

XD 2:35 dude this was in Family Guy when Stewie was freaking out...over somethiig

  • @Cl00lessGrl not only that, but 4:55 was in Blue Harvest during the death star escape battle. They sampled the audio and everything.

  • @Cl00lessGrl yep, they've admitted to using a lot of jokes from airplane.

  • Well, a spoof has to be a spoof of something, or else it wouldn't be a spoof.

  • definitely not the first spoof.... young frankenstein came out in 74.

  • This video is perfect for a Special Edition Boxed Set of Airplane! which also includes a copy of Zero Hour.

  • Bravo sir!

  • I'll never get over Macho Grande' !!

  • Duh. It was a spoof, that's why it was so goddamn funny.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I Love "Airplane!" and seeing the references just makes it funnier.

  • Wow, one of my all-time favourite films, but I never knew it was a direct spoof of something else! Brilliant!

  • To all those that are saying that Airplane isn't a remake of Zero Hour, IT IS. It is in every sense of the word. The producers even purchased the rights to the Zero Hour screenplay and refilmed the scenes based on the actual staging of the original film. They admit this on the DVD commentary. But it's also a brilliant parody of one of Arthur Hailey's other films Airport 1970, and it's one of the funniest films ever made.

  • @RegicidalManiac "Remake" usually indicates a film more or less conforming to the genre of the original movie. Since "Zero Hour" was a dramatic movie and "Airplane" was a comedy, it was not a remake in the BASIC sense of the word.

  • @weikko79 airplane! is the top dog, big cheese, head honcho, numero uno of spoof, parody, satire, lampoon, send-up movies

  • @ultrakool Coincidentally, I just found out that this "top dog, big cheese", etc. speech is probably a parody of a similar line spoken by Robert Stack several times in a 1955 movie called HOUSE OF BAMBOO.

  • Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffin' glue.

  • I had NO idea that this was the case. Amazing.

  • WIN!

  • THIS IS WHY AIR PLANE WAS SO GOOD! It actually took a complete concept and mocked it. Instead of like our major spoof movies of today that just throw cheap things from trailers in and pop culture references.

  • Is there a reason why the volume is cranked down to a minimum in this video?

  • it's a spoof, possibly the first big one?

  • @Username84778 Mel Brooks had made big spoofs before that.

  • @Username84778 ever hear of abbott and costello or the marx brothers?

  • its not a remake idiot

  • Not a remake, is a parody ...

  • @DrXoomG It has the same plot and characters, but does it comically.

  • @DrXoomG indeed it is, the makers of Airplane! actually bought the rights to Zero Hour from what I've heard.

  • @DrXoomG Exactly, it's a parody, a send up, not a remake. Yeesh.

  • @DrXoomG Parody of "Airplane 1979" & "0 Hour"

  • @DrXoomG A little bit of both, actually.

  • Wow ! What a revelation. Its my favorite comedy of all time. Possibly a spoof of this serious movie. Kinda like that Tina Fey skit of Palin's bomb on Katie Couric

  • Zero Hour is awesome! I love to watch Sterling Hayden work, is one of the most stoic, stone faced actors ever. That's why he worked so well in Strangelove.

  • @Tricklestone Have to agree about Sterling Hayden. See him in the Killing?

  • @sociopathways It's on my Netflix list, I think it's one of the streaming movies, thanks for the head's up!

  • Wow, I never heard of Zero Hour nor this correlation and history of Airplane! before. What a great way to fall in love with a classic comedy all over again!

  • I just wanted to tell you both: good luck, we're all counting on you.

  • This should be featured. Awesome job! Less than a million hits? Travesty!!

  • LOl I have to go watch Zero Hour now :)

  • This was fantastic! Can't wait to catch Zero Hour! on TV and laugh and what's not being said...

  • Thanks for the side by side comparison. Zero Hour is really the funniest movie ever made. But it took Airplane to show us why.

  • "flipflomas", thanks SO much for posting this! I've been a huge "Airplane!" fan since it first came out. What's wonderful is that being 12 at the time of the original, I've grown to love more and more of the gags the more times I see the film. Finally saw "Zero Hour" about a year ago, and laughed my ass off! Your editing of these together is just priceless. Thanks again!

  • Outstanding! I saw Zero Hour! on AMC last week and could not stop laughing at the dialogue.
