It's definitely a remake, but a farcical remake. If it were just a spoof, they wouldn't have lifted so much dialogue from the original. It's brilliantly done, though.
I think it would have been even more effective had they filmed it in black and white, though...
Its not a remake. It's a parody of lots of different movies and other events that people were familiar with at the time. Like Saturday Night Fever or the coffee commercial. Great video though. Saw them back to back on TCM.
They were planning a "Kentucky fried movie 2" & had set a video recorder to record late night T.V. commercials & when they played it back they found that the movie playing between the commercials was more comedically viable for parody then the commercials, that movie was zero hour.
People have a problem with calling this a remake? It's a comedic remake. It follows the script and shooting of Zero Hour! more closely than most straight remakes. It's not really a parody of Zero Hour, a mostly forgotten film, rather it uses the beats of the Zero Hour script to set up jokes and parodies of other things. Airplane! is actually the second remake of Zero Hour! which was originally a Canadian TV movie called Flight into Danger.
@monoceros4 That's how you show the ridiculousness of the original. As another example, Tina Fey's parodies of Sarah Palin were at their best when she simply repeated Palin's own statements. Airplane! wasn't just a parody, but was trying to point out how stupid the aircraft disaster film genre was.
oh yeah-forgot to mention Dana Andrews as Ted Stryker-he was a HUGE star in the 40's-so was Linda Darnell-check out "My Darling Clementine" she was so beautiful-a goddess
"I want you to pour every light you have on that field" is another one-thx for posting-I have been telling people about this movie since I happened to be seitching channels one night back in the day and caught it on the late show, I couldnt believe what I was seeing
Linda Darnell was the most beautiful woman in the world in her time, ol' Sterling Hayden-read up on him-real-life he-man-ran away from home, went to sea, fought in the War-he was the cop gunned down by Michael Corleone in he Godfather, and Elroy "Crazy legs" Hirsch-great college and proffessional running back
Yes if you seen Airplane at all....it's a spoof (parody) I love this movie...Been watching it since I could remember...Just like the new movies u probably watch such as : Scary Movie etc..etc.. They aslo make fun of other movies(Parodies) they DO NOT copy them...Anyway "flipflomas" Nice job with editing...great video quality....2 thumbs up from me keep up the good work
what does he say in zero hour in the seen that matches leslie nielsen saying " ijust want to wish you good luck and let you know were all counting on you"
@dawley84 He says good luck and finishes with "I'll keep your son with me." In Zero Hour, Striker and his ex-partner had a child together who was travelling with them. In Airplane, this was changed and there was no child character.
I rate Airplane! as one of my top 5 movies of all time, and I'm amazed that, until now, I never knew about Zero Hour. This was fascinating. I absolutely LOVE You Tube, and I must say watching this video was one of the best times I ever had YT!!
@mudhens4ever I know post is a year old but I just had to answer it. I just saw Zero Hour myself for the first time too. The whole movie is now on You Tube and it's uninterrupted .
To all those that are saying that Airplane isn't a remake of Zero Hour, IT IS. It is in every sense of the word. The producers even purchased the rights to the Zero Hour screenplay and refilmed the scenes based on the actual staging of the original film. They admit this on the DVD commentary. But it's also a brilliant parody of one of Arthur Hailey's other films Airport 1970, and it's one of the funniest films ever made.
@RegicidalManiac "Remake" usually indicates a film more or less conforming to the genre of the original movie. Since "Zero Hour" was a dramatic movie and "Airplane" was a comedy, it was not a remake in the BASIC sense of the word.
@ultrakool Coincidentally, I just found out that this "top dog, big cheese", etc. speech is probably a parody of a similar line spoken by Robert Stack several times in a 1955 movie called HOUSE OF BAMBOO.
THIS IS WHY AIR PLANE WAS SO GOOD! It actually took a complete concept and mocked it. Instead of like our major spoof movies of today that just throw cheap things from trailers in and pop culture references.
Wow ! What a revelation. Its my favorite comedy of all time. Possibly a spoof of this serious movie. Kinda like that Tina Fey skit of Palin's bomb on Katie Couric
Zero Hour is awesome! I love to watch Sterling Hayden work, is one of the most stoic, stone faced actors ever. That's why he worked so well in Strangelove.
Wow, I never heard of Zero Hour nor this correlation and history of Airplane! before. What a great way to fall in love with a classic comedy all over again!
"flipflomas", thanks SO much for posting this! I've been a huge "Airplane!" fan since it first came out. What's wonderful is that being 12 at the time of the original, I've grown to love more and more of the gags the more times I see the film.
