I personally don't think that politicians should be running this war anyhow. That's how we fucked up in Vietnam. The war should be run by the commanders on the ground and nobody else. However, I will say that if any politician is going to have a say in it, I would much rather have input from a man who almost died fighting in Vietnam than from someone who never served at all. John McCain has repeatedly proven his valor and integrity. I don't like Bush, but I have a lot of respect for McCain.

There are some decisions that the military doesn't and shouldn't be allowed to make automously. Paramount among those decisions is when to go to war and when to sue for peace. That's what we're talking about and that's where McCain's come up short.

Secondly, I'm not sure why McCain gets credit for spending years in a North Vietnamese prison camp. What insight does getting captured somehow during a completely different war some 30 years ago on making the decisions related to this war?
