  • Please read the meaning of Mridangam first. It is supposed to split as "Mrid" and "angam". Where Mrid means Clay (not mrithu as in soft).

In any form of music, the drums are for rhythmic beat. It is not melody instrument to be played softly.

  • its mrith + angam. mrith meaning sand. initially mridangam was made of sand. but it didnt prevail for long. but the name remains

  • stupid music

  • ****

  • It's called Mridangam for a reason - it's mritu (soft) angam (part)! Supposed to be played softly ... and deftly ... :)

No offence meant ... the player has played too played ... like the Thavil. A little gentleness will make it more enjoyable.

Video recording at 90 degree angle is amusing!!

  • Hi RamLakshmanan:

Interesting take on the meaning of the word mridangam. It definitely does not mean soft part! Also anybody who has played Mridangam knows that Mridangam is not at all a soft instrument - far from it. It can span the whole range of rasaas.

    Chidu...

  • @chidunarayanan
