If you haven't played it yet then Drakengard is definitely worth a look. There's 5 endings in that (ending e is the ending that Nier is the sequel to). Yoko Taro, the guy who made Drakengard and Nier said that Nier has a "good ending", if Nier has a good ending and you'd like to see what his idea of a bad ending is, try all the endings in Drakengard :P It's really worth a look.

Of course graphics make a game. Don't act like some kind of elitist who doesn't care about graphics. Screen tearing and shitty textures can destroy a game. When people talk about graphics being good, they're not necessarily jizzing over how realistic it looks, but how smooth they are, the frame rate, if there is screen tearing, if the textures take ages to load. Graphics do matter, don't care what anyone says.
Saying game is repetitive is pretty meaningless. Loads of games are repetitive. You do the same thing over and over again in them. God of War is in no way different in that regard. It's a moot criticism that selective games shouldn't be singled out on for.
Im tempted to get Nier Gestalt (Japan) for the epic Japanese voice acting and Brother main Character oh and I saw a picture of it and Im sure parts some pare more polished than "Replicant"... (I think its ps3 only too)

Great game, I just beat it and could not help but cry during the first and second endings. Working on the third time through now. I haven't cried over characters in any game in years... that is saying alot for this. It may not look as pretty as the other games but the characters and story made me forgive ALL of it's shortcoming.

you forgot the music. 50% of what attracts people to both movies and video games is music. I love the music and I will admit that the story and music were so good that I cried not just during the sad parts on the hero's side, but also the enemies. I personally can't wait to get my hands on Nier Replicant. I don't care if the only thing they change is the hero. I can play this game over and over without getting tired of it. :)

If you watch one of the last ending video, you see Angelous, Caim, and the grotesque mother enter the current world, everything is black and white, realesing a disease that turned the world into chaos, and it town (tokyo i believe) looks exactly like the city your in at the beginning of this video....

@coolnofool This game has Zelda references throughout the game as well, but at least Square Enix added their own little touch to them, like ghodan, a magical stone beast, is now Gepeddo, a mechanical head with two mechanical hands floating nearby, with the same exact attacks, and you have to use long range attacks to take out the hands, then throw bombs in the mouth to kill it.
I get the point UltimateChance was saying about how you can't outright claim that one voice acting is better than the other because opinions differ, but he really kind of contradicted himself when he said, "It's your opinion that the voice acting might not be to your liking but it is amazing and better then most media from Japan".
It's like now, he's saying that Japanese voice acting isnt as strong as the West, which isn't true. For every example of good western VA, I can name a Japanese one..
finished this game last week. i don't think the game rates very well. (i would give it a 7 out of 10) BUT, this game should NOT be missed! the story and characters are so compelling and relaistic in such a crazy fantasy world that it creates a very strong emotional bond with the characters. i find it very hard to cry and yet there were many cutscenes where i did so because i was so attached to these characters. this game is a MUST!
If someone asked me what my favorite game was a year ago, it would be FFX - now it's Nier. Hopefully it doesn't take another 8+ years for my next favorite.

I agree with your review. I loved Drakengard, but it was flawed gameplay-wise. Nier really stands out and it is very underrated by critics and gamers. I will say that the graphics aren't that great for ps3. I think that the graphics are decent, but far from spectacular. I love the non-linear gameplay, the story, the open world to explore, and what can I say? I'm just a sucker for J-RPGs.

Nice review. I agree with most of what you said but I would add some things that make the game unique. The music, except for a few tracks, is outstanding. It really sets a mood in some areas of the game like few games have. Also, I personally love a lot of the little creative and cool artistic designs. For example, the little girl running on the load screen and the side scrolling house. Maybe it's just me but the game is filled with all these little designs that really connected with me.

Good review man, it's a kind of mature and upsetting kinda game in a way, the story is faaaar from upbeat, lol, but nonetheless it is definitely well worth playing and it's a story I really appreciate. The music in this game is cool too, really good soundtrack.

@fernandezio Darksiders is like zelda. You go into dungeons to get your pwoers back and to stop an apocilipse (my spelling may be wrong on that) its a very small open world but in my opinion it was a very fun game. easy bosse sin begining and some difficult ones twords the end. Hope this helps
@ytcrazy1 It's kind of short if you don't do the sidequests. I managed to get through it in roughly 17 hours. But there is some replay value as you can unlock different endings that show different twists to the story.

Awesome review mate. This is turning out to be my favourite action/rpg game ever. I dont even mind the dated graphics, because I think they make up for it with the imagination and style. The way the magic is combined with the action is great too.

I've known a few people in japan for a good five or six years and I'm going to visit one of them next month. Agreed. While more often you'll see poor English dubs (most 2d fighters, Soulcalibur, and the majority of kid characters, etc.), the quality has been getting better over the years. Some even to the point where you'll find the English voices superior to the jap version (MGS, Cowboy Bebop, etc.). Preferring the jap dub simple cause its jap is also a very shallow reason.
My only exception is any samurai theme or something very close to jap culture, as it fits more.

Thank you, I see nothing wrong with the majority of western voice acting. It pisses me off because alot of the voice are good voices and fit perfectly, but yet they complain for literally no reason, now some voices are bad and others are annoying but that can go for japanese voice acting too, like why does Goku sound 5, when he was 152 before he(Assumably) finally passed away in GT?

I can honestly say this game has the best story of any game I've played in months, I literally almost cried about 5 times during the game. Movies have a hard time making that happen, so for a game todo that is amazing

Nice review. I agree with most of what you said but I would add some things that make the game unique. The music, except for a few tracks, is outstanding. It really sets a mood in some areas of the game like few games have. Also, I personally love a lot of the little creative and cool artistic designs. For example, the little girl running on the load screen and the side scrolling house. Maybe it's just me but the game is filled with all these little designs that really connected with me.

Good review man, it's a kind of mature and upsetting kinda game in a way, the story is faaaar from upbeat, lol, but nonetheless it is definitely well worth playing and it's a story I really appreciate. The music in this game is cool too, really good soundtrack.

I am sooo sick of people who find the smallest things to whine about in games. "oh the game's voice actors arn't top notch" " The graphics don't let me see my character's emotion in game." blah blah blah.
Seems to me that most people won't even conisder getting a game unless it gets a 10/10. If you can get a game with a emotional story, good gameplay, and length, you should be happy. I am going to get this game for the simplest reason, it..looks...FUN! great review man! thumbs fucking up!

@fernandezio Darksiders is like zelda. You go into dungeons to get your pwoers back and to stop an apocilipse (my spelling may be wrong on that) its a very small open world but in my opinion it was a very fun game. easy bosse sin begining and some difficult ones twords the end. Hope this helps

@ytcrazy1 It's kind of short if you don't do the sidequests. I managed to get through it in roughly 17 hours. But there is some replay value as you can unlock different endings that show different twists to the story.

Awesome review mate. This is turning out to be my favourite action/rpg game ever. I dont even mind the dated graphics, because I think they make up for it with the imagination and style. The way the magic is combined with the action is great too.

I've known a few people in japan for a good five or six years and I'm going to visit one of them next month. So yes, given the choice I will choose japanese dubs because I do not like westen voice acting. What is it about my opinion exactly that gets your panties in a bunch.

Agreed. While more often you'll see poor English dubs (most 2d fighters, Soulcalibur, and the majority of kid characters, etc.), the quality has been getting better over the years. Some even to the point where you'll find the English voices superior to the jap version (MGS, Cowboy Bebop, etc.). Preferring the jap dub simple cause its jap is also a very shallow reason.
My only exception is any samurai theme or something very close to jap culture, as it fits more.

It pisses me off because alot of the voice are good voices and fit perfectly, but yet they complain for literally no reason, now some voices are bad and others are annoying but that can go for japanese voice acting too, like why does Goku sound 5, when he was 152 before he(Assumably) finally passed away in GT?

I can honestly say this game has the best story of any game I've played in months, I literally almost cried about 5 times during the game. Movies have a hard time making that happen, so for a game todo that is amazing
