Once in a while I do. Then the video generates more conversations in a similar vein. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
I think people must get like this because when they were young, they used to bang their heads repeatedly against brick walls in the hope that the brick walls would come around to their way of thinking.
I couldn't concur more. I have no problem with being shown my shortcomings/faults. The nonsensical ad hominem attacks are just so tired. I've become inured to it these days, but when I first encountered it, it was rather upsetting.
Amen! I have to say that I'm pretty good at laying the facts out there and not getting personal. If the other person wants to start getting personal, I just start making rediculous smartass remarks back to them adding in things like how much they turn me on and such. My favorite was when I had some fun with someone through emails over a craigslist ad. Oh good times. Why can't people just relax and not take things so personally? Lighten up people and have some fun!

I am very much in agreement on this one. I was once a member of a forum aimed at people suffering from depression and mental illness and the place was a war zone! It seemed like the members who were actually interested in helping each other were grossly outweighed by those interested only in creating conflict and slating people for no reason.
This couldn't have come at a better time. I was getting pissed off at these people. But gatta smile!!! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! Can't let them know you're riled RIGHT??!

It amazes how some people behave on here in a way that they would never behave when discussing something "face-to-face'" I think the fact that it's the internet puts people more in your face (though lacking face-to-face - ironic huh?)
Though at times I would think someone was full of sh*t - I would always leave it at "respectfully disagree" Anything else is just wasted emotion/resources.
Totally agree. I have been lousy in the past, a temper, too much hurtful of what is online and people I don't really know. Sometimes it takes a bite of humble pie in order to learn. Or as you suggested, a conscious. In addition, maturity helps.
I am unsubscribing from the World...it's mostly people like you who point these troubling issues out that are the real problem, and I bet you're gay... that is the real problem gays on the internet can we discuss this rationally without calling each other names? I am constantly called old and told I don't belong on the internet that makes me laugh. By the way I am just rambling to ramble I think you are wonderful Curt and always have...I just never used all the characters so today I wanted to!
If it wasn't for us so called "old" people; there wouldn't have been an internet for those who tell us we don't belong on the internet! Don't worry what goes around, comes around; their day will come! LOL
The apex era of polite discussion and letters was accompanied by people who could fence in a life or death duel, or would be willing to punch it out.
If no one's going to knock their teeth out, or put a saber through their shoulder, the abusive, snotty punks feel invulnerable, where if they'd done that elsewhere, at the least, they'd have to clean their blood out of their shirt, and at the worst, would need their second to dig a grave for them.
There used to be a woman on here who ranted at me like a maniac because I wouldn't indulge her in her effort to publicly blast another YouTuber. The funny thing is, I didn't even make an issue of it; I just backed away quietly. After a year went by, she made a video making as many references to me by name that she could, confessed to a couple people privately that, yes, she was talking about Curt, and yet all the things she accused me of were the very things she had done herself. So odd.
Seriously though, we've had one encounter where we politely disagreed and the person didn't appreciate it and made it personal. That really sucked. Great video on a topic that we're sure many of us have had to deal with.
LOL, you're welcome for the tour - random as it was, I guess.
Yeah, I've witnessed you experience this firsthand actually. And I even recall a situation where we both disagreed with someone on a hot button topic and they responded by attacking us and others with sock accounts.
OH yes. I can think of specific examples from our recent private conversations, in fact. Some things are just too easily misconstrued no matter how much effort we put into explaining ourselves.
Nah, the problem still exists. I'm on the "all comments" page and the most recent at the top of the list is from 12 hours ago. Tons are not displaying.
I was holding off at one point too, but I figured... meh. If I reply to someone, it may make the whole discussion disappear from the current view, but at least they'll get a notice and can read my response. Of course, some in the very beginning got by me before I could reply to them, so it's not a perfect strategy. And if I'm not available to do this right after uploading, there's really no point I guess.
I think it's a huge sign of cowardice - the same people would almost certainly not speak to you like that. And, as you said, un-self awareness, in that they don't realise that it's only because they are in the saftey of their own homes or offices or whatever that they act so obnoxiously.
However: We are what we pretend to be, so they are giving a lot away about themselves with narrow minded, judgemental comments.
A window into their minds, you mean? Yeah, I think you're right.
I actually saw a good first hand example about 10 years ago at an AOL party (someone regularly hosted parties for guys who would go into one of the local area chat rooms). Two guys who had raged at one another more than once found themselves standing face to face... and neither one had the balls to say a word to the other for the longest time. By the end of the evening, tho, they had played a peaceful game of pool... wordlessly.
Gina, I'll agree with you just for another kiss on the cheek.
:-D
I've accused people of being into drama before and they must have thought it was a total insult, but oddly enough it wasn't. Hey, some of it is really just plain cartoonish and WORTH at least a few chuckles. But the truly hateful stuff... yeah, I can do without that as well.
That dreaded CAPSLOCK stuff. Someone included about 10 question marks at the end of a "who cares" sentence recently that pretty much told me they didn't appreciate what I had uploaded. They later apologized.
My guess is that the conversaion in person would have been vastly different because I could have heard how many question marks the person really intended to use.
Well why don't you just go cry about it. I know your talking to me and all I have to say is that you are thin skinned. Wait a sec. Are you talking to me? ARE YOU TALKING TO ME!??! Unsubbed and blocked. Unless I misunderstand. Then nevermind........buddy
I've found the breed that you describe rarely, if ever, post their own original content. In some contexts, and in relation to some comments, this definitely undermines their right to an opinion!
I always enjoy reading the comments on your videos because so many people give you positive feedback...so just like anything I guess you have to take the good with the bad. It's not always about the age of the individuals but definitely the maturity level...
I've been accused of encouraging people to behave like sycophants in my comment section before. But this has only ever come from individuals who have also just ripped into me and called me every name in the book just because I disappointed them somehow.
One was a conspiracy theorist who kept pressuring me to go watch some documentary that I already knew was wildly slanted... conspiracy theorists are usually the worst when it comes to flame wars on this site... so I've noticed.
This is why I'm somewhat of a loner in a sense online, I'm not a "conflict avoider" but I see no reason to argue pointlessly either.
I like Ken's phrase "argument machines." It seems that people just shout each other down now, without a thought to at least considering another point of view and having a discussion.
(is it possible the comment section is fixed now?)
You had me hopeful for a minute there, but alas the comments are still a bit farkakte.
Yeah, I'm generally not a conflict avoider either (aside from the truly pointless stuff you mentioned), and that surprises people occasionally, which always sorta surprises me because I don't ever intentionally put out any "let's only talk about nice things" vibe.
I realized a few minutes later comments were still messed up...
I don't mind dealing with real "issues" directly but all of the little stuff seems so petty in the environment so many of us are in now. We don't need any more stress or hassle in our lives that there already is, while coping with the world shifting beneath our feet.
I'm always surprised when people describe me as "quiet and easy going." ha! if they only knew! lol
I think they're full of you-know-what too, and the annoying thing is they never make videos. You go to their page and just see nazi gatherings, racist and homophobic bullshit, and a couple of 'Jesus Loves You' vids in their faves.
Sometimes you see all of that combined into one pile.
After all, I keep hearing from those folks that Jesus is more in love with the nazie homophobes than anyone else. And if they say it behind a really cool user name, it must be true, right?
Hate to sincerely admit it, but I love trolls. Yes - mostly full of shit, but sometimes they get the ball rolling.... Or at least occasionally give me a good chuckle.
It is my assumption that the people who can not debate or immediately lapse into name calling or being a complete ass are probably just 13 year old kids that have nothing better to do than troll the internetz trying to stir up the shit. Never bothering to flush it of course :)
As I was reading Mackenzie Phillips' book a few weeks ago, I kept expecting him to interrupt the final chapter with, "Excuse me, I'ma let you finish, but I just wanna say that Valerie Bertinelli still looks hot in a bikini."
Nothing like a good debate and sadly soetimes there is not a good debate to be found when all you get is such stupid and uninventive remarks. Me on the other hand is so full of **** lmao.
OMG!! I LOVE IT!! LOL!! WOW!! You hit the nail RIGHT SMACK DAB on the head Curt! I remember the days when you could have a civil discussion with another human being - then along comes the internet. The internet can be a blessing too though!! So I am not completely complaining. Besides - alot of it comes from preteens who haven't reached puberty...and some that have but never left the preteen faze.
It's so much easier to do it in person anyway. And you're right; having that kind of discussion with an angry child - or worse yet, an adult who behaves like an angry child - is pretty much impossible. Even if an adult's temper flares, there's more potential that cooler heads can prevail somewhat quickly.
I've noticed it too, it's gotten worse. They do it because they are behind a screen. Because they can. Lately if it comes up, particularly on one large very popular message board I visit, I call them out on it and walk away from the conversation. They are all cowards. Whether it's insulting you or a pubic figure that doesn't deserve it. All cowards.
You must be referring to some of the corners I just randomly found myself recently. It's been a while since I frequented the sites where it tends to escalate to its highest degrees, so it was a sobering reminder.
The weirdest was a slam someone made against someone else for liking the old Doris Day tv show. Yeesh!
I agree with Gogoran63. Honestly, I think manners and common decency has completely gone by the wayside. I'm on a mission to bring them back... wish me luck!
That's definitely true. It's one of the first things I took notice of during my first experience surfing the web (or whatever it may have been called at the time) back in 1992. The first time someone blasted me with a random stupid insult, I thought, "well they wouldn't have the balls to say that if they were standing right in front me, would they."
I chalk it up to one or both of two causes: the person is 12 years old or they feel a lack of control and a fear of consequences in their 3D life. As an adult it sometimes takes an effort to respond only to the argument for its own merit, and I was raised pretty well. Sometimes I get snarky online but I almost always stay under the limit of where I'd let things get to in 3D life. If I'm in a really bad mood it will sometimes get away from me but I'm never cruel. I might just verbally facepalm.
HA! Nicely put. Yeah, I sometimes wonder what the true age of commenters must be. I haven't noticed as much of that here lately, and I'm wondering if it mightly partly be due to the stricter requirements for setting up new accounts.
Excellent point. It is a bigger pain to set up a new account since they have to be associated with a gmail account. And since trolls tend to get blocked, it takes more effort. There are fewer dedicated trolls than lazy ones.
There's also apparently some requirement to have a cell phone number to verify that gmail account (I'm not 100% certain of this - have only heard about it from a couple people).
Another road block for the lazy angry types who prefer to hide their faces.
BTW, I found a copy of your ebegging rant on my hard drive today while I was clearing up space and it made me happy all over again. Especially the part where you declare it is not going to be a rant. I'm laughing as I type this, just remembering your tone of voice which carried simultaneously a note of determination, and a note of hopelessness. (I ran out of room and my email program downloaded 2000 duplicate messages once I made some room...ugh)
I too need to think more about whether a video I want to make when I want to, if it's got value or indeed has a point and make sure it's not rehashing one I've already done.
Self awareness? You mean it's not enough to criticize you, but now I have to pay attention to my own faults? I'm sorry, I'm a busy guy, I don't have time for that nonsense.
Actually, it's not just online. We're all being turned into argument machines rather than learners and discusserers. Hey, don't dis my made-up words; you know what I'm saying.
Yes I very much know what you mean, being agnostic I am often on the wrong end of an arugement both for theists and atheists.
Which is ... Fun.
But on even more minor things, giving a reasonable arguement seems be a hindrance here because people will respond with very short counter points with no relevance and then rate you down and get there friends to do the same.
Yeah, one of the reasons I turn off those "thumbs" in comments is that it also seems to be an outlet for passive aggressive stuff. Someone will get thumbed down simply because someone holds a grudge on a completely unrelated issue.
Fellow agnostic here, btw. I can relate to what you're saying.

I've accused people of being into drama before and they must have thought it was a total insult, but oddly enough it wasn't. Hey, some of it is really just plain cartoonish and WORTH at least a few chuckles. But the truly hateful stuff... yeah, I can do without that as well.
OhCurt 2 years ago
it starts with capslock and ends with blocking. so lame.
i always wonder what it would be like to "discuss" things with people like that in person.
speedyconkiwi 2 years ago
That dreaded CAPSLOCK stuff. Someone included about 10 question marks at the end of a "who cares" sentence recently that pretty much told me they didn't appreciate what I had uploaded. They later apologized.
My guess is that the conversaion in person would have been vastly different because I could have heard how many question marks the person really intended to use.
OhCurt 2 years ago
Well why don't you just go cry about it. I know your talking to me and all I have to say is that you are thin skinned. Wait a sec. Are you talking to me? ARE YOU TALKING TO ME!??! Unsubbed and blocked. Unless I misunderstand. Then nevermind........buddy

I've found the breed that you describe rarely, if ever, post their own original content. In some contexts, and in relation to some comments, this definitely undermines their right to an opinion!

Ooh, well put. It definitely undermines credibility sometimes, doesn't it.

I always enjoy reading the comments on your videos because so many people give you positive feedback...so just like anything I guess you have to take the good with the bad. It's not always about the age of the individuals but definitely the maturity level...
DietDrPepperGirl 2 years ago
I've been accused of encouraging people to behave like sycophants in my comment section before. But this has only ever come from individuals who have also just ripped into me and called me every name in the book just because I disappointed them somehow.
One was a conspiracy theorist who kept pressuring me to go watch some documentary that I already knew was wildly slanted... conspiracy theorists are usually the worst when it comes to flame wars on this site... so I've noticed.
OhCurt 2 years ago
fighting with people on the internet is both futile and dangerous, you never know who you are really fighting with and how far will they go.

This is why I'm somewhat of a loner in a sense online, I'm not a "conflict avoider" but I see no reason to argue pointlessly either.
I like Ken's phrase "argument machines." It seems that people just shout each other down now, without a thought to at least considering another point of view and having a discussion.
(is it possible the comment section is fixed now?)
jrsnyderjr 2 years ago
You had me hopeful for a minute there, but alas the comments are still a bit farkakte.
Yeah, I'm generally not a conflict avoider either (aside from the truly pointless stuff you mentioned), and that surprises people occasionally, which always sorta surprises me because I don't ever intentionally put out any "let's only talk about nice things" vibe.
OhCurt 2 years ago
I realized a few minutes later comments were still messed up...
I don't mind dealing with real "issues" directly but all of the little stuff seems so petty in the environment so many of us are in now. We don't need any more stress or hassle in our lives that there already is, while coping with the world shifting beneath our feet.
I'm always surprised when people describe me as "quiet and easy going." ha! if they only knew! lol
jrsnyderjr 2 years ago
I think they're full of you-know-what too, and the annoying thing is they never make videos. You go to their page and just see nazi gatherings, racist and homophobic bullshit, and a couple of 'Jesus Loves You' vids in their faves.
:-)
RobNorthampton 2 years ago
Sometimes you see all of that combined into one pile.
After all, I keep hearing from those folks that Jesus is more in love with the nazie homophobes than anyone else. And if they say it behind a really cool user name, it must be true, right?
OhCurt 2 years ago
Hate to sincerely admit it, but I love trolls. Yes - mostly full of shit, but sometimes they get the ball rolling.... Or at least occasionally give me a good chuckle.
EarlyWyrm 2 years ago
You're not alone. Sometimes it IS pure comedy (comedy at the comedian's expense, though).
OhCurt 2 years ago
It is my assumption that the people who can not debate or immediately lapse into name calling or being a complete ass are probably just 13 year old kids that have nothing better to do than troll the internetz trying to stir up the shit. Never bothering to flush it of course :)
boobtubious 2 years ago
At this point if we flushed for them, we'd probably need a heavy duty plunger on hand.

OMG!! I LOVE IT!! LOL!! WOW!! You hit the nail RIGHT SMACK DAB on the head Curt! I remember the days when you could have a civil discussion with another human being - then along comes the internet. The internet can be a blessing too though!! So I am not completely complaining. Besides - alot of it comes from preteens who haven't reached puberty...and some that have but never left the preteen faze.
thenudo 2 years ago
It's so much easier to do it in person anyway. And you're right; having that kind of discussion with an angry child - or worse yet, an adult who behaves like an angry child - is pretty much impossible. Even if an adult's temper flares, there's more potential that cooler heads can prevail somewhat quickly.
OhCurt 2 years ago
I've noticed it too, it's gotten worse. They do it because they are behind a screen. Because they can. Lately if it comes up, particularly on one large very popular message board I visit, I call them out on it and walk away from the conversation. They are all cowards. Whether it's insulting you or a pubic figure that doesn't deserve it. All cowards.
wutzernutzer 2 years ago
You must be referring to some of the corners I just randomly found myself recently. It's been a while since I frequented the sites where it tends to escalate to its highest degrees, so it was a sobering reminder.
The weirdest was a slam someone made against someone else for liking the old Doris Day tv show. Yeesh!
OhCurt 2 years ago
Does the site start with an "I" and end with a "B"? LOL

:-)
OhCurt 2 years ago
That's definitely true. It's one of the first things I took notice of during my first experience surfing the web (or whatever it may have been called at the time) back in 1992. The first time someone blasted me with a random stupid insult, I thought, "well they wouldn't have the balls to say that if they were standing right in front me, would they."
OhCurt 2 years ago
I chalk it up to one or both of two causes: the person is 12 years old or they feel a lack of control and a fear of consequences in their 3D life. As an adult it sometimes takes an effort to respond only to the argument for its own merit, and I was raised pretty well. Sometimes I get snarky online but I almost always stay under the limit of where I'd let things get to in 3D life. If I'm in a really bad mood it will sometimes get away from me but I'm never cruel. I might just verbally facepalm.
P00P0STER0US 2 years ago
HA! Nicely put. Yeah, I sometimes wonder what the true age of commenters must be. I haven't noticed as much of that here lately, and I'm wondering if it mightly partly be due to the stricter requirements for setting up new accounts.
OhCurt 2 years ago
Excellent point. It is a bigger pain to set up a new account since they have to be associated with a gmail account. And since trolls tend to get blocked, it takes more effort. There are fewer dedicated trolls than lazy ones.
P00P0STER0US 2 years ago
There's also apparently some requirement to have a cell phone number to verify that gmail account (I'm not 100% certain of this - have only heard about it from a couple people).
Another road block for the lazy angry types who prefer to hide their faces.
OhCurt 2 years ago
BTW, I found a copy of your ebegging rant on my hard drive today while I was clearing up space and it made me happy all over again. Especially the part where you declare it is not going to be a rant. I'm laughing as I type this, just remembering your tone of voice which carried simultaneously a note of determination, and a note of hopelessness. (I ran out of room and my email program downloaded 2000 duplicate messages once I made some room...ugh)

Every time I think about making a video, I hammer myself with the question of "what's the point here?"
If I can't come up with an answer, I often don't even hit the record button.
It's a form of YouTuber OCD, I think.
:-)
OhCurt 2 years ago
I might have YouTuber OCD too.
Hmm...*decides to make a video about it*
I too need to think more about whether a video I want to make when I want to, if it's got value or indeed has a point and make sure it's not rehashing one I've already done.

Yeah Youtube comments is not the best place for debate, it turns crapy quickly.
Arthur40TwoDent 2 years ago
And the more "hot button" the topic, the more potential for misinterpreting text comments there seems to be.
OhCurt 2 years ago
You're wrong, you dummy! You just can't handle...the...uh...um...crap.
I tried, but it's pretty hard to stick your head far enough up your own ass once you hit a decade+ since high school. Even in jest.
But then again, look at congress...but I digress.

By the time I took out the cable box, it was getting impossible to flip through "news" channels and not constantly see it (Nancy Grace, anyone?).
So, yep, you're right.

It seems petty at best.
Dustructive to self awarness at worst.
Thanks for the video.
Caladors 2 years ago
Yeah, one of the reasons I turn off those "thumbs" in comments is that it also seems to be an outlet for passive aggressive stuff. Someone will get thumbed down simply because someone holds a grudge on a completely unrelated issue.
Fellow agnostic here, btw. I can relate to what you're saying.
