I have a good trick for those who don't want to spend much on pickpocket. spend perk on the way to extra pocket and wait in the house til it's night. then steal it!! cause day time wil make your % to steal become 0 instead of the night time which you'll have chance!!

If you're only leveling pickpocket you could also enchant a few items with +pickpocket (I'm doing it after being a lvl 100 enchanter so it's +40 for me). So 3 items = 100% chance of pickpocketing without ever being seen, then just rob everyone in sight. Never actually did any pickpocketing throughout my game but it = levels and I like more perks lol.

basically u go around town, find Tova Shatter-Shield, pickpocket the key to the house from her, then go into the house, find the butcher notes and bam quest triggered

I'm not quite sure how to progress the quest seeing as Jorleif has nothing of use to say, and..Im not entire sure how to "investigate" the crimescene.

@TheBigFootC when you investigate the house, on the first floor all the way in the back, there is a drawer that has a bunch of papers on the shelves. I just grabbed everything in there and the amulet should be there. Go to a guard and talk to them about it and it should lead you to calixto for him to examine it. Then go to one of the women walking around town (the woman who claims she posted all of those letters around and she will tell you to go to the jarl's court person.

You have to follow the blood trail to the Hjerim, go to Jorleif, he will tell you the mother of the deceased has a key, find her in Candlehearth hall or pick the lock to the Hjerim. Investigate all the furniture and take the butchers journals and the "Beware the Butcher" pamphlets (Under those is the strange amulet) . Find Viola Giordano in Candlehearth hall, you need the pamphlet to speak to her. Now either follow the quest and accuse the mage or talk to the mage to find the real killer.
