I love the play on call at 1.27 - classic stuff. In a game played today - this would result in free, 50 metres (or more), a melle of some sort, and a lengthy spell on the sidelines to the guy who laid the bump. there would also be a trial by the media as this guy would be considered a thug who shoud be banned from the game for life.
AFL used to be the hardest game int he world. All these bumps and shirtfronts used to be part of the game. Now it has been taken out of the game because of head injuries and to encourage children to play.

Yeah I understand. We don't need harsh elbows to the face and punch ons, but you can't even lay a bump anymore, without the possibility of a report.
I just think the AFL have gone a bit far to protect the investment of their players. AFL/VFL use to be about the players going out and having a crack. Now it just seems they have to play the game like they are doing a business deal.
In regards to UFC comment, the rugged style of play was a component of footy and had been for 100 years.

i agree that NFL can have some pretty big hits in it and it's a pretty tough game
but the difference is that AFL players are able to get up to full speed before a hit and the players are usually unaware they are going to be hit so they are not prepared for it
plus we don't wear helmets and the head takes a mighty beating in all these bumps and is the main worry

Brutal! Pretty much every one of these bumps would result in a 3-4 week suspension nowadays. As much as I love the good old fashioned hip and shoulder, I can see why they are trying to get this out of the game, it is so very dangerous. Someone was gonna end up breaking their neck or worse if it kept going.
