I have listened to several versions of this song and this one is my favorite. I guess because this is the one I heard on the radio when it was on the charts. Several days ago I read an "essay" that suggested that the lyrics actually talk about addiction, drugs, alcohol, rather than a broken love affair. Could be.
Folks looking for live vocals and not hearing them are correct - I'm the guy on the right playing the Gibson. We Five did do Shindig, but we recorded an instrumental track with backing vocals specifically for the show and Beverly sang live. This appears to be one of many lip-sync dance shows we did between 1965 and 1967.
What's with the lip sync and where's the guitar cords. Bev was great though. I sure would like to go back to those days. I'd sure appreciate those old groups more.
I'm only 25, but I grew up listening to songs from this era. Older people- I am freaking jealous of you guys that were my age at that place and time. I would have been right there dancing if I had my way!
Great version (even though I personally prefer the original, single-voice take by Crispian St Peters). Love when the layered harmonies come in about halfway through, and the fantastic rush of energy it creates. Bit of a pity they didn't find a distinctive finish to bring it to.
I've been told by those who should know that Crispian St Peter actually heard the We Five record and thinking the song was a public domain folk tune, copied the arrangement and released it in the UK claiming to have written it. When the author's (Sylvia Fricker) publisher found out, they corrected the problem.
@jerryburgan That doesn't ring true. We Five released it in the US in 1965 and it was a big hit for them. St. Peter released it in 1966. It's just hard to imagine that he wouldn't know that no one in the UK would believe he wrote the song.
Great video! It is actually from the syndicated "Hollywood A Go-Go", Sept 25, 1965. Note the Gazzarri Dancers in the background.

Bev is smokin' hot. She can sing, dance and looks sexy sweet. Know what? Still does. The whole package.

Several versions of "You Were On My Mind" by Ian & Sylvia are on YouTube, including the original 1964 release.
This is a great song. If you like the song, it will be worth listening to Ian & Sylvia's version.

Thanks for clearing that up, Jerry. I'd thought St Crispian originated this one.
I still like the performance here! ;-)
