  • Good Version but nowhere near the quality of Luke Kelly. He version is undoubtedly the best.

  • this song gives me chills. i love it

  • What a pleasant apocalypse.

  • Nuclear war is truly devastating, isn't it? (that's my interpretation, anyway).

  • @CanCan2623 Yeah, that was also my thought. Very scary, but beautiful song really!

  • 2nd favorite song ever.

  • @michaelkringeta And then we of course need to know what your 1st is? :)

  • Nothing like the original or Luke Kelly's version, you wouldn't think ikt was about nuclear war from this. But icelt done all the same

  • Should have added; Two beautiful and simple voices and pure acoustics. Brill!!

  • I don't think the stuff from this album was played much on UK radio, cos i have heard little of the music. this tune is the best of all. It's sheer magic. Makes the spine tingle.

Thanks for the postings. JudeOr Eleanor.

  • Their harmony is so beautiful!!!!!

  • Nuclear War.

  • All you cunts shut up. Enjoy the music.

  • wtf are all you meat heads talking about? read the lyrics.

this song was written during the cold war when we had fleets of thermal nuclear warheads pointed at us and faced the real threat of all life on earth being destroyed in matter of hours.

  • i have listened to about 7 or eight of their songs in a row now i believe i am beggining to really like these guys good mood feeling think you to the english teacher in juvi that got me into listening to them years ago, sir u were a rock and an island i thank you .

  • luke kelly and the dubliners version is so much better than this

  • @008maguire Ever heard the really early recording of Luke singing this? It's amazing, just Luke and his incredible voice

  • @tony10396861 Couldnt agree more :)

  • The first time I heard this song I thought of one thing... Weed. I listened to it again and actually thought of what it could mean. I now love Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

  • Ok, never heard this song, but immediately found it awesome. I am going to listen to this one a few more times. (any song about creating the sun hear on earth with nuclear weapons is worth a closer look!)

  • good job, boys. I will always love you both

  • Great version

  • Why are you all fighting about a song I watched the tv this morning children are dyng because of a 50pence vaccine isn't available to them and one banker alone is making £40 million in bonuses over 5yrs. What's gone wrong with this world.

  • @Sunambra

You are right, so Bloody right !!

  • @Sunambra Er... so we should steal from that big bad banker. It's obviously his fault right. Or how about you give your money if you care so much.

I mean the banker could give some money for those people if he wanted to. But he doesn't need to buy his right to live from every beggar that might need/want something.

  • @UrbyKris I do give?

  • @Sunambra Do you feel it's your duty to do so?

  • @UrbyKris I do it because I want to help.

  • @Sunambra Well... but why do you think it's wrong if a banker makes 40 milion in bonuses over 5 years?

Do you think it's his duty?

  • @UrbyKris Because I think a nurse deserves more why doesn't she get a 40 million bonus and why did the banker if he and his like were the cause of the recession ?

  • @Sunambra The nurse "deserves" as much as the hospital pays...

  • @UrbyKris The banker deserved nothing they lost trillions and got a bonus

  • @UrbyKris I think you have worn out the "do you think it's your duty" question it's not my duty but my natural instinct my desire to help those less fortunate than myself just like my parents before me and my children too. I want a fairer world where one man doesn't make millions while little children starve to death. Maybe to you it doesn't mean a great deal that children die for the want of a little food but to me it's an unbearable truth.

  • @Sunambra Ah, right... fairer world. How would you do that? By stealing from the rich?

If you want to help these people be my guest... but I don't really get how it isn't "fair" that someone makes milions while someone else starves. It's not the rich mans fault.

It really doesn't mean a great deal to me if children that I don't know and are of no value to me die. It might sound cruel to you but I have nothing to do with their hunger.

  • @UrbyKris I feel sorry for you that you feel nothing because to me one hair on the head of that child is worth all the billionaires in the world.

  • @Sunambra Sure... say goodbye to your computer, your car and youtube for that matter because there won't be anyone left to make them. But at least that child won't die. Oh, wait... he'll die anyway because your prosperity has nothing to do with his hunger.

  • @UrbyKris I never ever said a man can't make money but tell me why does one man need a 40 million bonus on top of an already fantastic salary does he need that 40 million could it go to buying some vaccines?

  • @UrbyKris You win I don't want to argue with you. You're from Pluto I'm from Mars.

  • @UrbyKris I said a child dying for the want of a 50p vaccine you described them as beggars?

  • @Sunambra Well... do you not feel sorry for all the beggars in the world '-.-

  • @UrbyKris Of course didn't have to think about it I thought you didn't?

  • @UrbyKris Do you think the children are beggars

  • Luke didn't write this one but given its message Luke's version is the definitive one

  • having listened to this version and Luke Kelly's, I prefer Luke's one. I think he brings more gravitas to the issue. But that's just my opinion

  • What's with all the negative comments? A lot of Dubliners fanboys don't like anyone else covering the same material, even if Simon and Garfunkel sang it first. Get off Luke Kelly's nuts, his version is good too, but this version is supposed to sound quiet and contemplative. Guess folks don't like that sort of thing anymore.

  • thanks for posting such a nice song. Hard to find these days...

  • does anyone know where to find the tabs to play this?

  • luke kelly version better

  • The Sun is Burning sounds so sweet and peaceful. It took me about five to ten repeats to hear how early in the song they transition from a peaceful sunset to something that rises instead, the thing we still fear, forty five years after the song was written, the bright flash, and the mushroom cloud. i really like this song..what yours?. (^_^)

  • im 18 years old but this Song is very sweet and beautiful i like this song and all songs of Simon & Garfunkel my Favorite Singers of all time...

  • When such a gentle touch on a piece of music magnifies the contrast in music and lyrics to focus on the terrible reality of its message, some get easily confused what to do with it. No big deal, that's life, but here's an idea - thinking, which can take a day, a month, a year, whatever, is always a handy option. You'll find it rewarding.

  • As others have said, the song was written by Ian Campbell. It appeats in his 1965 songbook The Ian Campbell Folk group Songbook' which gives its origins and shows that it was copyrighted for him by Essex Music in 1963.

  • @tamcd1508

Thanks for clearing that up, always thought it was Ewan McColl. Great song anyway.

  • This no way compares to Luke Kellys origional version!!!!!!

  • The most sweet song I have ever heard.

  • Well you certainly can't beat Luke Kelly's version!

  • I'm at a loss as to why anyone would leave bad comments about this song.Grow up

  • wow didn't expect a song like this to spawn all this ignorant commentary. we can produce a beautiful song like this and then turn around and spew angry crap at each other over nothing. gotta love the human race.

  • nice song!

  • The Dubliners perform this much better. This version is a bit shit.

  • Comment removed

  • Ian Campbell is the author. Luke Kelly does a great version. This one is far from great.

  • Luke Kelly's version is so strong and red-blooded, that this can only seem slight by comparison. He truly made this song his own.

  • this is the greatest version for this song...that's my opinion...great simon and art

  • nice song

  • @andHammersForTeeth

I'd like to know what YOU listen to. Songs filled with sex, drugs, and violence? Heavy metal? Songs with lyrics that have no deeper meaning? No BETTER meaning?

  • @Fireicee1

    Jesus christ get over it.

  • @Fireicee1 I don't know what "andHammersForTeeth" said that you're responding to, but...as far as Heavy Metal goes...you wanna blow some minds? throw out "twisted sightless wrecks of men go groping on their knees and cry in pain" that's some mother fucking hard core shit. "What is that, Slayer?" "No, man...that's some early Paul Simon, man".

  • @Fireicee1 heavy metal can be deep too you know...

  • @andHammersForTeeth dude, you spelled fag wrong, and just throwing it out there, when you upload of yourself getting a triple kill or whatever onto youtube just because you're so proud of it you can't really talk.

  • @fallenleaves76 first off i spelled it wrong intentionally. also i was testing out the new theater mode in black ops. I'm sorry all you simon and garfunkel fags are butthurt that i dislike this song. but get over it. i made that comment like a year ago.

  • @alexp7268 You shouldn't be calling people 'illiterate' if you don't know the difference between "it's" and "its" and can't spell "derogatory".

That said, I agree with everything else you said. This song is beautiful.

  • @alexp7268

how about looking at a dictionary from time to time...? but the song is just great. that you got right.

  • @alexp7268 It's*

and you need to clean up your punctuation before you comment on another's illiteracy. Also, your agression kind of defeats your argument, as it makes you seem just as base and banal. Lastly, this is a good song, so I agree with you there

  • @alexp7268 Yeah, that's tellin' 'im!!! You go, Buddy!!!

  • @alexp7268 BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song is boring i think, try

    big bright green pleasure machine

  • This is good...I tend to prefer the version by Kate Wolf..she has that quiver in her voice when she sings this, like she is on the verge of tears.

  • every singer has their own style of singing and this is where each of them is unique and famous intheir own way... this song is beautifully sung by S and G.

  • kingneddy, luke kelly, of the dubliners, never put down any singer and your not talking for him, everybody dos the song there way, its for people to pick the version they like best, period.

  • this song is amazing. good version by them.

  • Comment removed

  • I think i like this one better.

simon & garfunkel's whole schtick was based on subtlety and irony.

this song fits perfectly into what S&G did.

  • I like this one better than Luke Kelly's.

A soft, gentle canticle with a sting in the end.

  • I couldn't agree more, it's heartbreaking to hear such a powerful song wrecked by two guys who are awesome musicians themselves.

  • I used to love the Wolfe Tones version, but nothing can touch Lukey singing it, I like a few of SnG's songs though.

  • this song is so powerful. how do they do it?

  • @daniandtp well they take a song written by a scotsman called ian campbell and made famous by an irishman called luke kelly and they do it them selves

  • Comment removed

  • @daniandtp simple it is about the nukes droped by the U.S.A on Japan during WW2. the attacks were planed for evening time

  • This song just brought me to tears. Amazing.

  • You know whats nuts? I listened to this song so many times, very often. I'd listen to the Simon & Garfunkel Old Friends box set. I'd sing along to this beautiful song, all the while just half-paying attention to the words and not "listening" to them. Then one day I paid particular attention to the last stanza, and I was like "omg! i've been singing about a nuke this whole time! what a happy song!" hah. I don't think that ever quite happened to me with another song.

  • sorry have to go with Luke everytime i know im biased maybe being a dub but i have never heard a voice like Lukes

  • Listen to Luke Kelly sing this. Amazing!

  • Exquisite: acoustic & unpretentious

  • yes it is but it's also very sad...

  • This song is absolutely beautiful... Wow.

    S&G rule so much.

  • Luke wrote this about nuclear weapons. It is interesting to hear a beautiful version of it.

  • Ian Campbell wrote it!!

  • @PMGMUFC

    right you are!

  • V pretty and lovely. I think I would rather hear it sung by Luke K too.The words are lovely.

    Jo S

  • good song

  • listen to luke kelly the sun is burning he wrote it, this version is very poor, he died of a brain tumor, irish ballad singer

  • first of all, ian campbell wrote this one. second, this is a good version. third, luke kelly sings it great too.

  • @JudeOrEleanor

Was it definitely Ian Campbell? I always thought it was Ewan McColl but that may have just been an assumption on my part. I do prefer the luke kelly version but this one's good too.

  • I agree, this is terrible compared to Luke. R.I.P. Luke

  • you cant really compare them in that way to be fair, S&G were cool in a psychadelic hippie way, Lukes version makes you want to sob, both versions are decent but on voice alone Ill go with Luke.

  • does it matter... it's a beautiful song.. whoever wrote it....

  • @Shellysmooch25 luke didnt write it as far as i know but his version is the best by far

  • @Shellysmooch25

Yes Luke Kelly's version is so much better. Great man . So sad he died so tragicaly and too soon

He was also a member of the Dubliners a Classic Irish folk band never to be forgotten.

No disrespect to Simon and Garfunkel they are just magnificent and I am a great fan and love their music.

  • I'm taking a class on the history of the Manhattan Project, and our teacher sent us this video.

  • Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
