I don't think the stuff from this album was played much on UK radio, cos i have heard little of the music. this tune is the best of all. It's sheer magic. Makes the spine tingle.
wtf are all you meat heads talking about? read the lyrics.
this song was written during the cold war when we had fleets of thermal nuclear warheads pointed at us and faced the real threat of all life on earth being destroyed in matter of hours.
i have listened to about 7 or eight of their songs in a row now i believe i am beggining to really like these guys good mood feeling think you to the english teacher in juvi that got me into listening to them years ago, sir u were a rock and an island i thank you .
The first time I heard this song I thought of one thing... Weed. I listened to it again and actually thought of what it could mean. I now love Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
Ok, never heard this song, but immediately found it awesome. I am going to listen to this one a few more times. (any song about creating the sun hear on earth with nuclear weapons is worth a closer look!)
Why are you all fighting about a song I watched the tv this morning children are dyng because of a 50pence vaccine isn't available to them and one banker alone is making £40 million in bonuses over 5yrs. What's gone wrong with this world.
@Sunambra Er... so we should steal from that big bad banker. It's obviously his fault right. Or how about you give your money if you care so much.
I mean the banker could give some money for those people if he wanted to. But he doesn't need to buy his right to live from every beggar that might need/want something.
@UrbyKris Because I think a nurse deserves more why doesn't she get a 40 million bonus and why did the banker if he and his like were the cause of the recession ?
@UrbyKris I think you have worn out the "do you think it's your duty" question it's not my duty but my natural instinct my desire to help those less fortunate than myself just like my parents before me and my children too. I want a fairer world where one man doesn't make millions while little children starve to death. Maybe to you it doesn't mean a great deal that children die for the want of a little food but to me it's an unbearable truth.
@Sunambra Ah, right... fairer world. How would you do that? By stealing from the rich?
If you want to help these people be my guest... but I don't really get how it isn't "fair" that someone makes milions while someone else starves. It's not the rich mans fault.
It really doesn't mean a great deal to me if children that I don't know and are of no value to me die. It might sound cruel to you but I have nothing to do with their hunger.
@Sunambra Sure... say goodbye to your computer, your car and youtube for that matter because there won't be anyone left to make them. But at least that child won't die. Oh, wait... he'll die anyway because your prosperity has nothing to do with his hunger.
@UrbyKris I never ever said a man can't make money but tell me why does one man need a 40 million bonus on top of an already fantastic salary does he need that 40 million could it go to buying some vaccines?
What's with all the negative comments? A lot of Dubliners fanboys don't like anyone else covering the same material, even if Simon and Garfunkel sang it first. Get off Luke Kelly's nuts, his version is good too, but this version is supposed to sound quiet and contemplative. Guess folks don't like that sort of thing anymore.
The Sun is Burning sounds so sweet and peaceful. It took me about five to ten repeats to hear how early in the song they transition from a peaceful sunset to something that rises instead, the thing we still fear, forty five years after the song was written, the bright flash, and the mushroom cloud. i really like this song..what yours?. (^_^)
When such a gentle touch on a piece of music magnifies the contrast in music and lyrics to focus on the terrible reality of its message, some get easily confused what to do with it. No big deal, that's life, but here's an idea - thinking, which can take a day, a month, a year, whatever, is always a handy option. You'll find it rewarding.
As others have said, the song was written by Ian Campbell. It appeats in his 1965 songbook The Ian Campbell Folk group Songbook' which gives its origins and shows that it was copyrighted for him by Essex Music in 1963.
wow didn't expect a song like this to spawn all this ignorant commentary. we can produce a beautiful song like this and then turn around and spew angry crap at each other over nothing. gotta love the human race.
first off you illiterate swine its fag abreiviation of faggot and fag is a derogitary term refering to gay people which simon and garfunkel were not and 2nd you can call it shit when you have sold 890,000 copies of one song so in short fuck you you snivilling little turd
I'd like to know what YOU listen to. Songs filled with sex, drugs, and violence? Heavy metal? Songs with lyrics that have no deeper meaning? No BETTER meaning?
@Fireicee1 I don't know what "andHammersForTeeth" said that you're responding to, but...as far as Heavy Metal goes...you wanna blow some minds? throw out "twisted sightless wrecks of men go groping on their knees and cry in pain" that's some mother fucking hard core shit. "What is that, Slayer?" "No, man...that's some early Paul Simon, man".
@andHammersForTeeth dude, you spelled fag wrong, and just throwing it out there, when you upload of yourself getting a triple kill or whatever onto youtube just because you're so proud of it you can't really talk.
@fallenleaves76 first off i spelled it wrong intentionally. also i was testing out the new theater mode in black ops. I'm sorry all you simon and garfunkel fags are butthurt that i dislike this song. but get over it. i made that comment like a year ago.
and you need to clean up your punctuation before you comment on another's illiteracy. Also, your agression kind of defeats your argument, as it makes you seem just as base and banal. Lastly, this is a good song, so I agree with you there
every singer has their own style of singing and this is where each of them is unique and famous intheir own way... this song is beautifully sung by S and G.
kingneddy, luke kelly, of the dubliners, never put down any singer and your not talking for him, everybody dos the song there way, its for people to pick the version they like best, period.
this is so gay its unreal. how dare these cripples sing this song and sing it so shit. u must be a geman queer are u? octine boobin splash. hile hitler!
