I don't get too upset...As i know what I do appeals to a certain age group....What surprises me most is the number of younger people who were taught some of these song by their parents
Great song! Memories of Jerry Blavat dances at the Trenton War Memorial Bldg. My best buddy could really dance to this, Dave Scharibone, we joined the Marines together and he was Killed in Vietnam, thanks for posting this song, every time I hear it I can see him dance. Never imagined I would ever get to hear it again.
Really sorry about your friend .After all these years Vietnam still conjures up painful memories...Glad to brighten those memories of you and your friend. And you are more than welcome for the post
@smitty2283827 Hey...I was at the War Memorial dancing like a fool. Edgely Fire Hall with Jerry Blavat!! Used to hang out in Trenton, Blue Fountain Hall in the 'Burg! Good time.s
@hwaj5300 haggard from battlefield bad company just watch the : battlefield bad company mad world trailer ... when they make fun out of gears of war trailer
Wow,me too LOL. My wife and I, along with about 30 of our friends went every Friday night for three yrs. Sep 64-May 67. We're still stomping after all these yrs. By the way, we were entering one night when some windows actually broke and fell the two stories down to the sidewalk. So you are so right when you say you actually see the windows shaking. No knives, no guns, just fun----it's a shame the kids don't have that opportunity today.
The first night that they played "I Do" by the Marvellos I really thought the house was going to fall down. Not that we cared! We were there during the same era. Before I could drive, I would take the P&W from way out in the country - King of Prussia - to 69th Street to dance all night with my "Prendie" girl. We're coming up on our 39th wedding anniversary and continue to have great times. However, it is hard to beat those Friday night Chez Vous memories. Saw Blavat recently -he's still rockin'.
If anyone has any idea where I may find a copy of this song, please let me know. I have tried e-bay and craig's list to no avail. I am 63 years old and have never owned a copy. I would appreciate any help from anyone.
Does anyone know where I may find ghis a copy of this beautiful piece of doo-wop? I never got a copy in my 63 years. If anyone can please help me find it, please, please let me know. I love it so very much!!!!!! Ivory hansel
It is an old slavery plantation song. Shortnin' Bread was any fat and flour to make a "mushy" meal a bare minimum staple of a slaves' diet. The song talks about how the mother goes to jail for trying to feed her slave children some food (shortnin' bread), but she didn't care if she had to steal from the master's kitchen at the risk of going to jail or getting flogged, she had to feed her babies "Shortnin' Bread. Hope this makes sense.
Philly is in the house. What a great song.I can't believe so many years have gone by since we danced to that tune at Wagner's Ballroom. The Geator dj'd then and we were all his Yon Teenagers.Great times/memories.
Yeah!! Grew up listening to Jerry Blavat and Georgie Woods and Jimmy Bishop and Lloyd Fat Man playing this stuff. You too, I'm guessing? Holliday used to have a great Sunday night doo-wop show, but the idiots at the station decided the public only wanted to hear the same old Top 10 crap from the late 60s and early 70s over and over. Anyway, doo wop still lives in The Big Scrapple. And on youtube! Always nice to see another Philly guy on here.
Yes sir! Remember "Mama's closet?" when OGL was on 1210! King Arthur still has a great show on 1360 friday nights! Philly is the cradle of R&R!! RIP-Hy-Lit!
Hah, forgot about Mama's closet. Funny. Didn't know about 1360, I'll try it out. Lee Andrews, Garnett Mimms, The Dovells, Danny and the Juniors, The Jesters, The Dreamlovers -- on and on. The glory days of WIBG and WHAT and WDAS. Oh yeah, and Hyski O'Rooty McDowty O'zoot. Good Philly stuff!
YES! You're talking my language! Yes check out 1360 6-10 tonight, or any friday, they have a call in request, or you can e-mail in one. I promise you won't be disappointed!
Thanks doowoppers, I will do that. I hope I can get them in in Philly -- I know 1340 is WHAT -- I have a vague recollection of a South Jersey station on 1360 -- from Vineland? Now I wish I could go to Palumbo's in a Krass Brothers suit after dinner at Frankie's Seafood Italiano! Long live Wee Willie Webber!!
You're welcome.
