@Sssmoothy Good catch Sssmoothy, I knew it wasn't a raven but couldn't figure out excatley what it was. I had 4 quesses and the hooded crow was my first choice because of the dark sun burst pattern on its breats. Also if that were a Peregrine Falcon the glider would not have stood a chance razor talons and they have been clocked, yes clock in an attack dive at 200mph,
I keep coming back to this video for another look - awesome footage mate. Would you mind telling us a little about what video camera you used, any damage to the plane from the lawn dart landing (it looks like the crow got the better of the plane in the end, or was it a "controlled ditch"?
I have a DLG myself, and my next build may well be a speedo, for those days where it's too windy to fly a 140g plane :D
How many planes do you know of that can fly and maneuver like this, with absolutely NO Elevator or Rudder movement at all? Unless there are Canard and a lower rudder that we can not see, I know of no planes that can fly that way... In the beginning of the video you see the elevator being tested when the plane is obviously in someones hand and not flying. But you see nothing throughout the entire "flight." So No I am NOT kidding.
Firstly, the Speedo has no rudder. Secondly, when he tested at the start, that's the full throw of the elevator. You'll rarely, if ever need to use that much elevator when actually flying. If you look closely, the elevator is used quite a bit, but only in small increments.
Another point - this is a small, highly maneuverable slope soaring model - designed to fly in high winds, which is part of the reason that it looks a little strange sometimes when its sliding about in the wind.
Nice lift you have to keep going like that any problems keeping a viable altitude.I live near the Great Lakes.Did the bird attack right were the hinges were it seems to know what it's doing when it grabs the end of your elevators and rudder. Thanks for posting a howl :D
the bird is a good bit faster then this plane. hmm wouldnt a vertical clime get the plane away from the bird? given the plane has the power to go vertical. lmao in my head im trying to figure out how to defeat the bird with this set-up
It's the 100% -real and truth event that had place in Israel, Bat-Yam ,clear to the south beach(Tayo) in April -2010. You can see me and my friend Evgeny on the back line.(trying with a para-plane)at the firsts seconds of the clip Every guys having their hobbies on the hill knows this mr. Crow

@dashortyguy48 That's the bird's nictitating membrane. It's a semi-transparent inner eyelid they use sorta like flying goggles to protect their eyes from flying debris or whatever they happen to be attacking.
@dashortyguy48 That is the hooded crow's nictitating (third) eyelid that protects its eye, it closed it when it was attacking the plane in the same way that it would close it if it were fighting another bird, so that the eye would not get damaged.
This is a top ten YT video for me man. Superb. The little guy was not going to give up was he?!
These birds are very intelligent, and you can tell he's sizing up his enemy. It's bigger than him too. And then he seems to get in a perfectly judged bite for just long enough, and boom! X¬D
I love watching birds fly and am always fascinated by their skills. They'll always be better than us humes. ;-) Was the plane ok?
This is a great video... monsters, plane crashes... and the seashore. TFP, Andrew! Good job. It looks like a magpie... certainly a big Corvid, they are very smart birds!
Does the bird often come to the RC site? Looks like a really nice place for soaring.
@andrewid1976 -- Well, obviously the camera is pointing to one side only. I was assuming it had a propellor, since most RC planes do. But I stand corrected (I looked it up: it has no propellor!).

@mattgick Actually, looks a lot more like a Magpie. It has a much higher contrast between black and white feathers, and is known for being quite aggressive toward other birds and even pedestrians and cyclists on the ground. There's a guy in AU with an FPV plane that gets attacked by a Magpie every time he flies and has many videos of it. It even managed to pluck the camera off his plane (through which he flies).
Great video, thanks for sharing it...
