As fantastic as I find this in one way, I also find it sort of pointless in anther... Because it's all well and good and very impressive how he sounds like a bass and a guitar at the same time, but....that's exactly why it's pointless. He sounds like a bassist and a guitarist. It's not really creating a new crazy new type of music. It could be done by a normal guitarist and bassist and that kinda makes me feel like this loses a lot of its novelty. Interesting though. And skillful.
@pazzmodium What a guitarist/bassist duo would miss is the level of communication between the two instruments. Since Charlie has complete individual control over the bass and guitar parts, or at least seems to, he's able to create and improvise on a level that two people could never do. It's the same way that a pianist who starts improvising "out" is able to use their left hand to follow the same line in a way that most other musicians couldn't follow.
@pazzmodium Also, saying that another instrument or pair of instruments can do what one virtuosic person can is like asking what the point of Woody Shaw being able to play huge leaps on the trumpet when a piano can do the same thing much more easily.
Got to love how well he walks the bass line while keeping the lead and rhythm on the guitar. Amazing chord voicings all over the place as well. Glad Tosin Abasi steered me a little towards this guy.
haha i want to be a musician one day so i can play smooth but confusing music on a trippy whacked out guitars for ages while pulling ridiculous faces at every one while maintaining a happy but legit atmosphere. one day i will
@timjmoran haha dude misinformation! i think this guy is brilliant!! you shouldn't assume i mean something without asking my general opinion. and as for his face, i like to focus on all elements of the entertainer, its what i do, are you going to pick on me for it? just because you don't??

@TheSpearsProductions String science is all about dividing the length of string at certain points to get desired pitches. The difference in bass/guitar strings division points needed to be taken into consideration so that the relative tuning of all the strings would work while playing. So to get the desired 4ths vertically from the bass and guitar strings took precise measurements across the height of the board so that each note division was correct for that pertaining string.
@amjan Actually, a longer scale length allows a thinner string to achieve the same pitch at a given tension. The purpose of have a longer scale length on the lower stings is so you can have enough tension at a low pitch without having to use insanely huge strings.
I've also never been one to buy into the "bigger string = better tone" argument. That's not to say that there isn't a tonal difference, It's just not much. Billy Gibbons uses very thin high strings and his tone is anything but weak.
@FreaquedeMusique john mayer is a huge charlie hunter fan...he even says his tuning on that song is inspired by his work. he has a video on his channel where u uses this exact guitar, too.
Yeah, charlie is awesome. love it. Just checked out an awesome video of another great guitarist in Canada check out (Pai Crowd, The Music Video,,,Groove•O•Ly•O•Scene)

A friend of mine and I were just discussing how unimpressed we were with Charlie Hunter following an opening act by the Nels Cline Singers. However, watching this video not in that context is simply mind boggling.
@MrFlowers back in the day he used a H&K tube Rotosphere. not sure what he's using now. He didn't use a Leslie speaker, just a fender twin or Victoria amp. These days he doesn't do much organ at all, just rock sounds and uses Zvex pedals and a Keeley comp as far as I remember.
Is there any other player in the background, cause i noticed that there were times he's not hitting the bass strings but i can hear clearly the bass notes playing.
@marlonization If you're talking about what he's fretting out, you're probably just noticing when he plays the bass notes open. Otherwise, its like Mattlarrivee said, I'd assume the video sync is off, because no one else is playing.
@LukeSnyderMusic Out of sync? I don't think so. Look carefully at his thumb hitting the bass string, if its out of sync it could only be point of a second.
@marlonization hmm, well can you give me an example of what you're talking about, in that case? Because I didn't notice any place where it looked like there were sounds that he wasn't making.
@mac21982 why? ive seen steve vais frets that are made by a company called true temperament or somethin like that, and his frets are like all curved, all differently, they look really weird, is this one of those systems? cuz its really weird!
@HiImJerry8 Because he has an extended range instrunment (*string) the thicker the string, the longer the scale length needs to be. Imagine if you will a bass and guitar, try to put them on one neck, if you use the guitars scale length, then the bass strings will be floppy and go out of tune, if you used the bass's scale length then the guitar strings will be to tight and go out of tune, so the fanned fret board deals with this problem and keeps tuning and intonation in check. Hope that helps :)
normally there is no reason to point out somebody's guitar face, because that just means that they are in their special musical place, but I have to admit, i did laugh at some of his faces. Excellent playing btw :D
A question for his guitar: Does he essentially have 5 normal guitar strings, and 3 bass guitar strings? Is the tuning any different?
@ImmortalCadaver novax fanned fret system. one scale length on bottom, one on top. draw lines in between the two and you have a fretboard that allows for super low bottom strings and low pressure on the highs.
It's like he established his own musical cultural forms and then became the master of them. Sounds so relaxed and natural. Can we get him on a banknote or something? National treasure? Maybe the zero-dollar bill like the "Gentlemen" album cover.
saw charlie for the first time in '98ish, still don't have a clue what he's doing, and i've been playing guitar for 17 years. he's way above my level of comprehension. thankfully i don't have to play him, i can just listen :).
@chrishongrocks HAHAHA!!!!! nice, hell yeah! I say the same, biatch. Fingerstyle all the way! Fuck yeah! Mr. Charlie Hunter said it himself! fuck yeah =)
@chrishongrocks No, picks are for different genres. If I'm a heavy metal guitarist, I have to play whit a pick not whit hands. And now tell me that Vinnie Moore, for an example, is a kid...
I always laugh when I see guitar vids on youtube titled "Impossible Guitar Solo", or anything like that. Then I watch some Charlie Hunter vids and think 'Man, this is 10x more difficult to play. And it sounds better!'.
@Theblob516 this guy just found his own way in the music, yeah, for you it seems like very difficult or impossible, but if you got what exactly his doing it will be looks like playing something common and simple, just try to understand his way of feelin' the music... good luck
Well heavy, bass strings feel, play and intonate better at longer scales, and guitar strings shorter scale. So it kinda makes sense for the frets to "fan" out if you have very heavy strings and very light ones, so you don't compromise either end.
Ralph Novak said he developed that system so it would have longer scale length (high string tension) and better intonation than conventional electrics like a Gibson or a Fender. He also pushed Jim Soloway to make his own 27" scale length necks (even though Jim doesn't offer a stock guitar with fan frets).
Hunter is technically astounding - but I agree - the keyboard sound was getting very annoying. I am looking forward to seeing him play live next month.
As fantastic as I find this in one way, I also find it sort of pointless in anther... Because it's all well and good and very impressive how he sounds like a bass and a guitar at the same time, but....that's exactly why it's pointless. He sounds like a bassist and a guitarist. RuecianG? He uses a Leslie Speaker cabinet, like those used with Hammond organs.
panhead1219 1 year ago
What kind of effect does he use to get that organ effect? Is that a POG?

I always laugh when I see guitar vids on youtube titled "Impossible Guitar Solo", or anything like that. Then I watch some Charlie Hunter vids and think 'Man, this is 10x more difficult to play. And it sounds better!'.

@Theblob516 this guy just found his own way in the music, yeah, for you it seems like very difficult or impossible, but if you got what exactly his doing it will be looks like playing something common and simple, just try to understand his way of feelin' the music... good luck

What's the reasoning behind having fanned frets? I've seen them before, but I don't understand why someone would want them.
DragonFlopp 1 year ago
Well heavy, bass strings feel, play and intonate better at longer scales, and guitar strings shorter scale. So it kinda makes sense for the frets to "fan" out if you have very heavy strings and very light ones, so you don't compromise either end.

@achickensandwich
I suppose that makes sense. I didn't know if
it was more of a personal choice when it
came to how comfortable your fingers are
when playing or something like that, but what
you said makes sense.
DragonFlopp 1 year ago
Ralph Novak said he developed that system so it would have longer scale length (high string tension) and better intonation than conventional electrics like a Gibson or a Fender. He also pushed Jim Soloway to make his own 27" scale length necks (even though Jim doesn't offer a stock guitar with fan frets).

I think this is amazing

are his 7th and 8th string bass strings!??!?
quarentine99 1 year ago
Yeah, Hunter is a beast. In his trio he plays the bassline and the guitar on the same instrument.
Theblob516 1 year ago
so sick. i dont think it beats Tosin Abasi, but its nice to hear 8 string jazz
quarentine99 1 year ago
Hunter is technically astounding - but I agree - the keyboard sound was getting very annoying. I am looking forward to seeing him play live next month.
