  • As fantastic as I find this in one way, I also find it sort of pointless in anther... Because it's all well and good and very impressive how he sounds like a bass and a guitar at the same time, but....that's exactly why it's pointless. He sounds like a bassist and a guitarist. It's not really creating a new crazy new type of music. It could be done by a normal guitarist and bassist and that kinda makes me feel like this loses a lot of its novelty. Interesting though. And skillful.

  • @pazzmodium What a guitarist/bassist duo would miss is the level of communication between the two instruments. Since Charlie has complete individual control over the bass and guitar parts, or at least seems to, he's able to create and improvise on a level that two people could never do. It's the same way that a pianist who starts improvising "out" is able to use their left hand to follow the same line in a way that most other musicians couldn't follow.

  • @pazzmodium Also, saying that another instrument or pair of instruments can do what one virtuosic person can is like asking what the point of Woody Shaw being able to play huge leaps on the trumpet when a piano can do the same thing much more easily.

  • he's face says to all..ORGASMIC!

  • slash is better

  • @ShadKiklas I really hope you're joking...

  • OH MY GOD

  • fuckin eggs Bacon

  • I quit...

  • Amazing. Plus he looks a bit like 'Mater' from 'Cars' at 2.46!

  • Good stuff

  • crazy fingers lol, awsome song and player

  • and I can barely play the intro of "stairway to heaven"....

  • Holy shit!

  • just when you think you are getting good at guitar, you find out that this guy exists and it instantly sets you back 10 years...

  • keeewll !!!

  • Got to love how well he walks the bass line while keeping the lead and rhythm on the guitar. Amazing chord voicings all over the place as well. Glad Tosin Abasi steered me a little towards this guy.

  • Grande!

  • Effing spetacular... swinging his *ss off!

  • this shits all over lamb of god :)

  • wow

  • Some of the best bass playing I've heard.

  • this guy didn't even go to music school...raised his game on the streets, unreal

  • @bodingtons pretty sure he learned from satriani actually

  • @BifSkizzy

youtube 'interview with Charlie Hunter part one" and watch from about 2:30 onwards, Hunter goes into his musical background

  • haha i want to be a musician one day so i can play smooth but confusing music on a trippy whacked out guitars for ages while pulling ridiculous faces at every one while maintaining a happy but legit atmosphere. one day i will

  • @shaterproofblosm awww.... it must really suck to be so damn cynical.. I feel bad for ya. interesting that

you focus on the faces he makes whilst playing... not REALLy that important in the grand schem of things, is it?

Hunter is, plain & simple, a GREAT musician, genius guitar player, who is doing something REALLY

unique. WHy come off so snarky & negatory?

  • @timjmoran haha dude misinformation! i think this guy is brilliant!! you shouldn't assume i mean something without asking my general opinion. and as for his face, i like to focus on all elements of the entertainer, its what i do, are you going to pick on me for it? just because you don't??

  • @shaterproofblosm Awww.. Sorry... I didn't see it as "picking on you".. certainly have seen FAR worse

on this site.. just a lil' healthy debate.. is that so Wrong? I don't really see how CH's music is ,um,

"smooth but confusing", tho...I can see how yr. comment was kinda confusing, tho.

  • @timjmoran that's not the right way to use negatory in a sentence

  • @tchoeool ummm.. I really do appreciate the Grammar lesson.. not even sure " Negatory" is a

real word, to be honest.. . just having some fun, taking license w/ the language.

  • @timjmoran it is a real word and i thought i'd learn you seeing as your comment was annoying

  • @tchoeool huh!! YA DON'T say-Funny to hear ya'll say yer gonna

"learn" me, like some Backwoods Preacher, since yer all about

"Proper" Definitions & all- besides, I certainly have no corner on Annoying Comments,

since YOUR silly , and rather annoying comment about CH started this whole stoopid thread. BTB, Einstein, I just looked up Negatory in my dictionary.. and it AIN'T in there. So put THAT in yer pipe & smoke it-I guess

I "learned "you, this time, eh?? U can thank me later.

  • @timjmoran negatory is a word get a bigger dictionary

    i said learn ironically

i'm not gonna thank you despite the fact that et is now later

i'm also not gonna pick up on any bad grammar

  • @tchoeool WELL Played Sir.I stand corrected.. that IS a real word-goes back to 1580, from the French

"negatoire" . Huh. And here I thought a Trucker on a CB radio invented it ( "that's a Negatory, Good Buddy")

And I KNOW you were being Ironic- I was just messin' wit you. I guess we can at least agree that Hunter is

a TOtally badass player-I have watched him from 10 ft away, and I STILL can't imagine how he does all that-

and I am a Guitar player meself. Mind-boggling.Thnks for "learnin'"me.

  • @timjmoran glad we can all agree

  • I kept thinking to myself, "When are they gonna show the second guy playing?"

  • Proof that our species is moving right along........ look at those frets!!!!

  • @Meshuggaaaahhhhh every second everything evolves in some way. fact.

  • guitarist should be nervous around this guy, bassist should be terrified.

  • I just burned all of my instruments up so as to stop wasting any more time persuing half of the above talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • god this is so tepid

  • I'm just blown away by his amazing talent

  • Sick PIMA!! What is the make of this magnificent instrument?!

  • i can barely hear this

  • Can somebody explain the angle change of the frets? Is it more ergonomic or something?

  • @TheSpearsProductions String science is all about dividing the length of string at certain points to get desired pitches. The difference in bass/guitar strings division points needed to be taken into consideration so that the relative tuning of all the strings would work while playing. So to get the desired 4ths vertically from the bass and guitar strings took precise measurements across the height of the board so that each note division was correct for that pertaining string.

  • @TheSpearsProductions With the lower strings are longer, they can be thicker and therefore sound a lot better.

  • @amjan Actually, a longer scale length allows a thinner string to achieve the same pitch at a given tension. The purpose of have a longer scale length on the lower stings is so you can have enough tension at a low pitch without having to use insanely huge strings.

I've also never been one to buy into the "bigger string = better tone" argument. That's not to say that there isn't a tonal difference, It's just not much. Billy Gibbons uses very thin high strings and his tone is anything but weak.

  • @rhymenocologist That's what I said. :)

  • it sounds a little like Neon by john mayer when he starts to play faster in the beginnin

  • @FreaquedeMusique john mayer is a huge charlie hunter fan...he even says his tuning on that song is inspired by his work. he has a video on his channel where u uses this exact guitar, too.

  • @hiphopsucks96 I know! He wrote In Repair together with him an SJ.

  • charlie hunter big influnces on my playing, please check out kulu change of heart on youtube, album no rider is now on i tunes.

  • Just amazing....one of my all time favorites now.....

  • after about 2 seconds of hearing this video i favourited it

  • Mind: Raped

  • Cray cray you is

    yeee

  • "Can i get the tab for this?"

    -some idiot, YouTube.com, Feb 2005

  • @shyampster if there's some real good tabulaturist out there. =)

  • just watched for the second time and WOW!!!! unbelievable what this guy does!!!!

  • HOW????????????????????????? =O

  • what kind of strings are those

  • How can ANYONE dislike this video? Just shows how fucked the world is.

  • Its crazy how he's playing this with only four fingers on the fretboard haha

  • how do you tune up that thing man!

  • @funkparafernalia Bass: EAD Guitar: ADGBE

  • @MrGearguru doesnt he tune like a tone up or something now?

  • @HiImJerry8 Minor third up. But not when this video was made. Now he uses only seven strings too.

  • @MrGearguru Crazy

  • Nearly better than Green Day's guitarist.

  • @2442sheep um...duh!

  • @2442sheep Um...duh!

  • @2442sheep

your kidding right? this blows away green days repetitive style basic up/down stroke 3 cord simply pop style playing by far..

  • holy shit !

  • A friend of mine and I were just discussing how unimpressed we were with Charlie Hunter following an opening act by the Nels Cline Singers. However, watching this video not in that context is simply mind boggling.

  • It's a shame those Novax guitars all look like they were designed by Salvadore Dali.

    Still really want one though.

  • 1 dislike for every string he mastered

  • I like his guitar style and his sound. It's sounds like a band!

  • This is seriously sick! Oh my gosh this is fantastic! How on earth 8 people could "dislike" this, is beyond me! Crazy!

  • Hell yeah! I'm taking some groove from this guy fo sho!!! Way to inspire Charlie!

  • 7 tone deaf and blind idiots dislike this.

  • DAMN.

  • does anyone know what pedal he uses to get that organ sound?

  • @MrFlowers According to Wikipedia he uses a Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere (perhaps the MKII).

  • @MrFlowers he feeds it through an organ amplifier.

  • @MrFlowers He uses a Leslie speaker I think.

  • 7 people can only play one instrument at a time

  • @MajkeTiTvoje Believe me, the rest can't play even two.

  • @MajkeTiTvoje what?

  • @MajkeTiTvoje No, 7 people are mad that they can only play 1 at a time. 656 people are cool with it.

  • i love people like this!

  • If you put on even more strings, would the frets join at a point?

  • Great playing!

The chord changes is almost "I got a woman" from Ray Charles. :)

  • i like his face expressions at the end xDD

  • Is there any other player in the background, cause i noticed that there were times he's not hitting the bass strings but i can hear clearly the bass notes playing.

  • @marlonization Most likely this video is out of sync.

  • @marlonization glasses.

  • @marlonization If you're talking about what he's fretting out, you're probably just noticing when he plays the bass notes open. Otherwise, its like Mattlarrivee said, I'd assume the video sync is off, because no one else is playing.

  • @LukeSnyderMusic Out of sync? I don't think so. Look carefully at his thumb hitting the bass string, if its out of sync it could only be point of a second.

  • @marlonization hmm, well can you give me an example of what you're talking about, in that case? Because I didn't notice any place where it looked like there were sounds that he wasn't making.

  • whoa...

  • 1:04-1:27 possibly my favorite jazz lck of alltime and forever

  • Tell me why frets like those are necessary

  • @shuckslbj I can tell you to research and find the complete answer if you really want to know that bad.

  • @shuckslbj So that people like charlie hunter can jam like this

  • I just watched this guy live yesterday, I'm blown away man.

  • I would give up my soul to play like that!!!!

  • why are the low 3 strings black?

  • @ForcesOfRandom

    Nylon bass strings maybe.

  • holy shit whats up with those frets!? :S

  • @HiImJerry8

    fanned

  • @mac21982 why? ive seen steve vais frets that are made by a company called true temperament or somethin like that, and his frets are like all curved, all differently, they look really weird, is this one of those systems? cuz its really weird!

  • @HiImJerry8 Because he has an extended range instrunment (*string) the thicker the string, the longer the scale length needs to be. Imagine if you will a bass and guitar, try to put them on one neck, if you use the guitars scale length, then the bass strings will be floppy and go out of tune, if you used the bass's scale length then the guitar strings will be to tight and go out of tune, so the fanned fret board deals with this problem and keeps tuning and intonation in check. Hope that helps :)

  • @beenoopo amazing, but must be tough to get used to playin with those frets like that, especially when playing chords and scales

  • @HiImJerry8 I can only imagine lol :)

  • @HiImJerry8 imagine a Bb barre chord!

  • I have an 8 string guitar and am working on my jazz now rather than metal. And now I feel bad. ): Curse you Charlie Hunter!

  • HOw friggin cool is this! This guy is one unique as well as one skilled bitch!

  • i would give up my first born son if i could play like that

  • I invariably don't like his tone and effects use but I love his playing.

  • normally there is no reason to point out somebody's guitar face, because that just means that they are in their special musical place, but I have to admit, i did laugh at some of his faces. Excellent playing btw :D

A question for his guitar: Does he essentially have 5 normal guitar strings, and 3 bass guitar strings? Is the tuning any different?

  • INCREDIBLE!!!

  • I agree with theblob516.

  • why do the frets look like that?

  • @ImmortalCadaver novax fanned fret system. one scale length on bottom, one on top. draw lines in between the two and you have a fretboard that allows for super low bottom strings and low pressure on the highs.

  • @ImmortalCadaver they are fanned for better intonation

  • @ImmortalCadaver they're tired

  • You'll prolly get mad.. but i remember him as the guy that recorded In Repair with John Mayer...

  • nice ! です.

  • He's so good that his kids are gonna hover and shit!

    Scientists are gonna go apeshit!

  • what a groove for 2 parts simultaneous playing

  • It's like he established his own musical cultural forms and then became the master of them. Sounds so relaxed and natural. Can we get him on a banknote or something? National treasure? Maybe the zero-dollar bill like the "Gentlemen" album cover.

  • CHARLIE HUNTER WITH ERIC KALB AND MIKE WILLIAMS 8:30-10:30

IN THE CAMEO (BACK OF THE LOVIN CUP)

hes playing in williamsburg brooklyn tonight!!!! the cover is 12$

93 north6 between berry and whyte!!!

  • saw charlie for the first time in '98ish, still don't have a clue what he's doing, and i've been playing guitar for 17 years. he's way above my level of comprehension. thankfully i don't have to play him, i can just listen :).

  • Cool.. much talent.. but the tone... might as well just play an organ.

  • Comment removed

  • So, 3 bass string & 5 guitar strings?

Pretty sure this guy is the man

  • Joe pass would be proud

  • AN 8 string Novax with fanned frets!!!

  • I hope he's got an extra fan blowing on his brain 'cause you know it's overheatin!

  • if sex could talk ...

  • Chuck Norris wept after seeing this

  • This guy is nearly as good as BonJovi

  • "Picks are for kids"

    - Charlie Hunter, Guitar Player, Nov 1995

  • @chrishongrocks really? he said that?

  • @HiImJerry8 Sure did. Look it up. Youtube won't let me post the link for some reason but you should be able to google it.

  • @chrishongrocks HAHAHA!!!!! nice, hell yeah! I say the same, biatch. Fingerstyle all the way! Fuck yeah! Mr. Charlie Hunter said it himself! fuck yeah =)

  • @chrishongrocks No, picks are for different genres. If I'm a heavy metal guitarist, I have to play whit a pick not whit hands. And now tell me that Vinnie Moore, for an example, is a kid...

  • that's no guitar it's a spunt-a-ma-phone

  • Kind of like a Warr Guitar! Very Nice!

  • All I can say is WOW.....I'm truly impressed...Tuck Andrews/Joe Satriani hybrid.........

  • He makes me proud to be a fellow member of the human race.

  • is this from right now live dvd?

  • Charlie Hunter doesn't use an actual Leslie (note there isn't one present on stage). He uses an H&K Rotosphere to achieve the rotating speaker sound.

  • That guitar looks like Lenny Breau's seven string.

  • Who rated this down ? Clowns

  • fake :P

  • @derektruckslover you're an idiot

  • @zoso623 it was a joke ;)

  • That is so unbelievable, I love it.

  • wah. truly amazing. haha.

  • RuecianG? He uses a Leslie Speaker cabinet, like those used with Hammond organs.

  • What kind of effect does he use to get that organ effect? Is that a POG?

  • I always laugh when I see guitar vids on youtube titled "Impossible Guitar Solo", or anything like that. Then I watch some Charlie Hunter vids and think 'Man, this is 10x more difficult to play. And it sounds better!'.

  • @Theblob516 this guy just found his own way in the music, yeah, for you it seems like very difficult or impossible, but if you got what exactly his doing it will be looks like playing something common and simple, just try to understand his way of feelin' the music... good luck

  • too good

  • What's the reasoning behind having fanned frets? I've seen them before, but I don't understand why someone would want them.

  • Well heavy, bass strings feel, play and intonate better at longer scales, and guitar strings shorter scale. So it kinda makes sense for the frets to "fan" out if you have very heavy strings and very light ones, so you don't compromise either end.

  • @achickensandwich

I suppose that makes sense. I didn't know if

it was more of a personal choice when it

came to how comfortable your fingers are

when playing or something like that, but what

    you said makes sense.

  • Ralph Novak said he developed that system so it would have longer scale length (high string tension) and better intonation than conventional electrics like a Gibson or a Fender. He also pushed Jim Soloway to make his own 27" scale length necks (even though Jim doesn't offer a stock guitar with fan frets).

  • I think this is amazing

  • are his 7th and 8th string bass strings!??!?

  • Yeah, Hunter is a beast. In his trio he plays the bassline and the guitar on the same instrument.

  • so sick. i dont think it beats Tosin Abasi, but its nice to hear 8 string jazz

  • Hunter is technically astounding - but I agree - the keyboard sound was getting very annoying. I am looking forward to seeing him play live next month.
