@rhumbaphone If you inspect closely, you'll see he's on a Bobby Dukoff Hollywood in this video. Guess he just felt like that one on that particular day. Doesn't really matter...!
@Superdry1302 It's a Dukoff Hollywood (he says so in the full DVD) in "something like a 7" b/c apparently chris potter will play whatever he wants and sounds beast on it without regard to little details us sax mortals worry about such as tip openings
@gjbsaxman94 Selmer SBA and a Bobby Dukoff Hollywood in this video. Guess he just felt like that one on that particular day. Doesn't really matter...!
The way Chris shifts time around is incredible. Every time you think he's flipped the beat around, he turns it around and keeps on playing like nothing's happened. Talk about tension and release
Talking about embouchure and whether we need to change it or adjust it as we play all over the horn...Well they don't come any better than Chris when it comes to playing. You can see the profile shots of Chris on this video...man his jaw is constantly moving forward and back and this guy plays all over the horn in big jumps and leaps. So many guys are out there saying you should never change your embouchure, I'm sure they just aren't aware of the fact that they do. I think it's necessary...
@buttheadgsxr1000 A lot of jazz players make large adjustments to embouchure while playing to make inflections. The idea of a stationary embouchure comes from classical playing. Playing classical I find I don't move my embouchure much if at all just because of the nature of the music.
@buttheadgsxr1000 Typically a good embouchure doesn't move at all. Check out all kinds of classical saxophonists or some players like Greg Osby.. His face is stone solid when he plays. No movement. And he plays his ass off.
See that is what I find so confusing...and I agree with you, but then you see someone like Chris Potter play...and he does move his embouchure. I find I have to adjust mine from the top of the horn to the bottom. If I want the bottom to come out loud and strong I have to make a big change with reed pressure, amount of reed in my mouth, and wind pressure too.
@buttheadgsxr1000 Hey man, do what you want. Cuz I get tired of people who try to mold people to play like others. That is why this great music is being put into a museum. I mean, its good to pick up on what your influences do but you don't want to turn out playing just like them. and thats why Chris Potter is great cuz he is revisits the past but everything he puts out is pushing the music and really driving. KEEP PLAYING EVERYONE.
@Jazzman, Thanks for your input...and I tend to agree with you on that topic. The saxophone is a very expressive instrument. And regarding (what do you want?) Shit man, how did you know my birthday was coming up?...I could use a new box of reeds,'Vandoren JAZZ 2's would be nice...
Take care man, and I'm just enjoying this topic of jazz and the saxophone.
@kusanophone now that's what I call self-effacing. A god of the saxophone pretending he might not remember the head. And then what he dies is play the head, but not, but yes, but wtf. Mans a complete genius. Makes me want to die, practise like a monothematic microbe or drink myself stupid.
sounds like a psycho
