About six years ago, I turned down a job that today I would kill for. The call came out of the blue and I had to make a decision on the spot, and I said no thinking it was the right decision at the time. I sympathize with George Lazenby, its like Ronald Wayne and Apple Computer. Nobody can predict the future, you have to do the best with what info you have at the time.
Even with the trouble on set, O.H.M.S.S. is a terriffic, classic Bond film. It's a shame Lazenby let his ego get out of control then. I would have loved to see him do a few more Bonds.
Everyone interested in Bond movies should see OHMSS. I think it's great & Lazenby was brilliant. He took bad advice and didn't take the 7 picture deal they offered him!! I agree with Cubby Broccoli (producer) who said he could have been the best Bond. Shame for all involved...including the viewers :(
man, just being in one good Bond movie has opened doors for this guy since 1969. It's better to have done it once and been good (as he was) than gone out like Tim Dalton, one fair to good one, one fair to awful one. I'd take Lazenbys path for sure. What is really too bad is that he didn't get to star in Never Say Never. Connery walked in and took that too. Must of been hard to deal with.
George done well for an untrained actor, and I think he would have went on to master the character as the series progressed. Then again, It's maybe just as well that he turned down more bond roles down because Diamonds are Forever was bloody awful and the subsequent bond films were crap until Pierce Brosnan got a good one. I hope that they remake some of the more shitty ones with Roger Moore, based on the Fleming novels, because they demand a great Bond actor like D Craig to do them justice.
Lazenby was the best Bond, by far the closest to the character in Ian Fleming's novels. And he was also great in the action sequences. Unfortunately, he had to wear a frilly outfit with a kilt in the role and was dubbed in those scenes by an actor with a voice like Joe Lieberman's (honking like a goose). This was the studio's doing, of course, but I think it radically affects people's memories of him despite the fact that he was so perfect for the part.
For all the crap this guy gets, I thought he was great in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." I don't think many newcomers could have played Bond so well considering they were replacing Sean Connery, but I think Lazenby did a great job in the film and wish he had done more.
I agree. He brings a much more quiet and cooly confident Bond compared to the ultra-cool sophistication of Connery. I guess thats what makes the film work, because it's so hard to imagine Connery's Bond falling in love, whereas you always get a bit of a romantic undertone with Lazenby.
Sean intentionally played the role badly. He was dead tired of James Bond and only accepted to make a come-back when offered a record high paycheck for the time.

Life is all about learning from mistakes. He admits he was arrogant and stupid - comes across as nice man. OHMSS is a great movie.
Good on you, George.

He should've gone on and starred in Diamonds are Forever. Sean didn't seem very comfortable in that one. Too bad George only got to do one Bond film.
