There's also ANOTHER released mix of the Buddy-Miles-on-drums version of the song, found only on a Warner Bros. various artists 3-LP set called "Looney Tunes." That version includes additional overdubs by Buddy Miles, and excessive flanging of the rhythm guitar.
@SteveEspinola - The Looney Tunes version is the first one I heard, and the only one I knew of for many years, so that's the one that sounds best to me. I hadn't noticed any "excessive" flanging, but the lead guitars don't get panned around as wildly as in the other versions. The Looney Tunes liner notes state that it's the single version, but maybe they were wrong.
The 1st (& best) mix you are playing is not actually the single mix. It's an alternate mix, with slight panning differences, probably done immediately before or after the single mix, with Jimi present. (It is so similar to it that it barely matters, really). The actual "single mixes" of this & "Izabella" have never appeared to my knowledge on a legit CD. This "almost single mix" is the one that has appeared in the CD era on "Cornerstones," "Kiss The Sky" and 2-CD "Voodoo Child" hits/live comp.
@SteveEspinola Thanks for the info Steve. The "Looney Tunes" version would have also been interesting to compare. It's amazing that a guy who only had three studio albums in his lifetime could have ended up with such a messy catalouge.
One of his best songs... but actually they're all fucking great!
