Dude, how did you make the bow? Some time ago I went to music store and asked for violin to play. I thought I will be easy (I learned violin 10 years ago) but it was my epic fail. I coudn't get any note with the bow. Insted of droning fiddle sound I had only something like "Shhhh".

you forgot to rosin the bow. Rosin is a type of natural wax that you rub on the bow hairs.

Sounds like crap, but that might be due to the strings and bow... try adding two pegs and buying a cheap set of strings from ebay, you can get generic brands for $10 there. As someone else said, try putting more hair on your bow too.

Keep experimenting and who knows, maybe you'll be making nice instruments one day.

hey, it makes sound! Try to put some more hair (or string, I suppose) on the bow, this should help with tone... everything else comes with practice, have you had an actual violinist play it?

try making one with 3 string, tuning is 1a 1e 1e (yes thats two e's in the first octave) this is balalaika tuning, u might be able to get it to work

I have to make an instrument for my phizicks class. What did you use as strings and bowhair?

I used weedwacker twine as the strings. It is too thick, so it can't be tuned very high, but it comes in different thickness, so just buy some thin stuff. I used fishing line wrapped around two screws like 50 times as the horsehair, then coated it with rosin. It works well, but I would suggest making the fishing line lay flat like a real bow somehow, and make the tension higher than just handwrapping it.

There's a dowell that runs through the body and under the bridge. I put a small chunk of wood between the dowell and the top, seems to work alright.
