  • Thank you for the tutorial on upgrading the memory. I have a question: My HP 550 (looks like same model as yours) has the 1GB of Hyundai Electronics DDR2 memory module in slot #2. Can I put a different brand such as Crucual or PNY 2GBs in Channel #1, for a total of 3GBs -OR- should i just remove the 1GB altogether. I am going to install Windows 7 64bit so I need the 2GBs at least.

  • Can you buy 1 gig and put it together with the 1 theres already in?

(sorry bad english i am dutch)

  • yes you can. the ram works in pairs

  • as this laptop comes with vista 32 bit edition would you recommend just buying one 2gb module to add, or replacing the whole lot with 4 like you did?

  • 4GB will give you marginally better performance than 3GB (if you have an existing 1GB module). Normally you will only have about 3.2-3.5GB of usable memory if you install 4GB. It all depends on whether you want the best possible performance, and how much you want to spend on your upgrade. RAM is cheap so I normally recommend going for the full 4GB.

  • plus dual channel usually works best in equal pairs

  • thank you 5 stars

  • hi what sort of ram do i buy for the HP550??

  • We have compatible upgrades on our website. Visit our homepage at the address shown in our youtube channel description, then click on HP, then 500 series notebook, then 550.
