  • Waouw...

  • Anyone else thinks they both sound better on the conn?

  • Brian,"oh, Waynes horn..." haha!

  • Goddamn, Bryan, you are sick - you have such a huge tone!! It goes with saying how crazy Jim is! Killing :)

  • Maynard played on a Constellation for a time as did Chet Baker and Tom Harrell

  • Brian and Kevin, the trumpet world owes you bigtime for making this video and sharing Jim's knowledge with all of us. On behalf of generations of trumpet players to come, thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • sounds great

  • Does Brian play lead on "Underground" by Ryan Haines?

  • @gregpenechar Yes, Brian plays lead on that tune.

  • damn...chops. sounds awesome!!!

  • i love the comment about the pinky ring being broke off and the guy saying no pressure so funny. saw airmen of note live it was amazing i wish i could get trumpet lessons from these guys

    you guys are great

  • See, this is the real trick to getting high notes. It's not about mouthpieces, but how you use you air which sadly you can't buy in a store.

  • I'd say, fortunately you can't buy it in a shop because where would be the secret of great playing, if everybody played like this?

This is great as it's special....for me...

  • @jazzanova68 playing high notes is not in itself great playing, it would be fortunate that not everyone could play this way as the world would be full of unmusical screaming. It's HOW you play the high notes that makes a great player. No style, no soul, no good no matter how high!

  • @zombbg4 yeah, you're definetely right, no doubt.

just meant that the secret of discovering the point where you have nearly total control of the instrument is achieved by those guys due to make music and use the whole instrument

  • Great info, I'm trying this out right now!

  • it's kind of hard to catch everything jim's saying.. he starts and stops so much lol

  • idiot

  • AIR POWER!! that's how we get it!!

  • i think that's the opposite of what mr manley's getting at.

  • Damn he is amazing, hehe that was really funny, "I have no friggin idea" when he is talking at the begining, is it bad to take a lot of air or did he just mean on his horn.

  • I believe what he meant was, to achieve higher notes it's not really up to how much air you take in. If you noticed, it was if he was spitting the the high notes out - Nick Drozdoff talks about this. Walt Johnson also talks about this. The air is just the "fuel" for the sound.

  • Kevin

I've viewed this most informative video many times - neither of you talk about the aperture you use. Having just been to a clinic given by Roger Ingram - his view on opening the apreture to compensate for playing on a small mouthpiece has enabled me to make immediate progress. Interesting?

    Kind regards

  • There IS a lot of validity to what Jim is teaching, not taking in so much air, etc. something to work on for sure. Last I heard Jim had Bob Reeves copy an old Giardinelli MF MPC

  • wow fantastic.may i know what mouthpiece did you used?what size?thanks

  • oh my god!! I'm taking a private lesson with him! He rocks!

  • WOW!!! My ears are ringing. I like how you guys are teaching and learning form each other. I'm no lead player but this can really help me. Can't wait to see you in concert!

  • i really dig kevin's sound

  • Effortless !

I've had my share of high note playing. I use a lot of air and seem to get high notes but it is always a struggle. I can get up there but once I am there... I don't have any flexibility.

The more I see and hear these amazing trumpet players the more I see that once they finish playing the notes....they don't seem to be out of breath.

There is something to their approach which I find amazing. Smarter and not harder is the key. Absolutely right.

  • What is Jim's setup?

  • hahah! 1:40-1:50 is hilarious

  • whatever kevin played is amazing....

  • Unreal. Smarter not harder...

  • What kind of horn is Jim playin'???

  • dido to the last comment

  • what's the exercise at 5:11? i've heard it before.

  • if i'm not mistaken for part of it it sounds like hes just doing tritones

    ie cgc f#bbc# cgc ect...

  • does jim use a squeeling embocher or something?

  • I like it

  • I simply can not believe it...! Amazing !!! Sounds GREAT !!!

  • eso es una clase disculpa una clase de que de notas apretadas la verdad no quiero ofender pero es que no le veo el sentido

  • daamn. i dont knwo what kevin played but it was aammmaaaaaazzzzzinnggg

  • jim can really play up there man, but brian sounds so much better on the lower octaves

  • phenomenal*

  • hey kevin and brian I just saw you guys perform a couple of days ago. Phenominal job!

  • you to are sick

  • two 2 both of you i just saw that i didnt spell two right

  • I like this video, but I can´t understand very well, because my english is not good. I ask everyone have a translation for Spanish ou Portuguese about the main idea (principal aproach).

  • funny that brian said that that was the first g above c ever played on that horn cuz he's got them now.

  • God...let brian talk....Jim keeps talking over him...not listening

    How frustrating

  • wow. I am a freshman in high school and i need to hang on a high E sometimes for very long. Only on good days can i do it. I play a used MF horn. any advice to improve my overall range? my goal is to hit a solid G (an octave above the top space on the staff) thanks! you guys are amazing!!

  • I met Jim before. I asked him "what's your range?" he's like... "um about a triple C" i was thinking to myself "this guy is full of shit" he took me back stage and showed me.

  • that's just naaasty...

  • Lip slurs, Clarke Studies, and Schlossburg.

  • listen to what he says on this video lol

  • See if you can follow the breathing stuff that Jim talks about. Also, the MF horns are very large and require a lot of air. I used one throughout HS and college. It was a large bore with a 51/4 inch bell. It was very difficult to blow above high C with a standard embouchure. Will be difficult above G for you. You might want to consider a smaller-bore horn. I changed to a Callichio ML and it made a huge difference.

  • It's not a Connstellation, it's a Bob Reeves Raptor...

  • One of the horns played is a Connstellation.

  • I applogize, I thought they were referring to Jim's horn.

  • @saxydg Kevin playing a Conn Jim has the Raptor

  • Dig the Connstellation. Same horn I play.

  • Sickness. I'd love to be his neighbor lol, seriously.

  • Thanks for posting this video. Great advice.
