I must say the depth of Pennie's pocket is considerable. He has his own style. In a jam like this you might expect him to chop it up like them gospel drummers, but people who know his work with the DEP know the guy's all about patterns and applied rudiments. That's what I love about his playing. So concise. Still one of my drumming heroes.
Why does everyone have to over analyze everything? "Chris Pennie isn't funky enough to jam with TM Stevens he can't groove blah blah" Who gives a flying fuck.. this is for fun, not for you people to pick apart and act like they had been rehearsing this for months and going on tour...
Half of you guys are idiots.. This was completely unrehearsed. The caliper of musicianship in TM and Chris is immeasurable. They are DRASTICALLY different in styles that they play. I PROMISE that no one talkin shit on this video can hold a candle to the ass of either of these guys on their respective instrument. Not to mention BOTH Chris and TM are 2 of the nicest most humble people walking the planet. Step away from your keyboards and get a clue.
@xlivid1x i met tm and spent a whole week around him, he is without a doubt an amazing bassist as well as a very well rounded person. in short, he is awesome
if you talk shit about this guy, prepare to be laughed at
The best thing about T.M. Stevens is he actually loves performing for people regardless if he is getting paid or not. The best feeling in the world is doing something you love and sharing with the world. That is living!
I'm a dillinger hardcore fan, love pennie's playing and all, but seriously he is NOT the right drummer for a jam with TM Stevens . Insane skills, but he can't groove .
Now TM and Gil Sharone, that would've been another story ^^
My comment was/is for this video, i don't really care to search through other videos as it doesn't make his performance here in this video any better. Glad i pissed you off, don't let it f**k up your christmas.
there's absolutely nothing wrong with this performance(maybe it wouldn't kill him to play with more volume control) and you are close minded if you can't even consider watching other videos
It's called improvisation. Maybe you can play like that with a total stranger to see what happens. It's very easy to play music that you already know with people that you feel comfortable with, that's because there is something developed called chemistry. Now, try to develop that same chemistry with a total stranger.
Awesome drummer, but kinda limited to only a snare, mounted and floor tom. Hes using a lot, tho GOD LIKE, single strokes. Imagine if this guy had a monster set. He would be a God among men.
Nothing I said takes away from this man, he is insane behind the set.
that's exactly what my teacher says and it's true some guys(mainly gospel drummers) can do more with JUST a hi-hat, snare, and bass drum(maybe a floor-tom) than those death metal guys with their 20 piece set-up's
very true.... good thing about pennie is he can do even more with a large kit. i saw him play with coheed using a 7 piece and it was some of the best drumming ive heard
Gah why must you people dog on Gil? Chris and Gil have two polar opposite styles. Chris is more tech base than groove base. Where Gil can groove like no other, but he lack in the technical. (not saying his beats are hard, cause listen to his shit with stolen babies, he's a beast) i like em both. They both made me re look at drumming.
Dude, why post that. If you were there behind that kit would you even know how to feel, what emotion you were laying down? Its all about the groove not the chops punk.
i think its useful to have some chops though, you need the groove foremost but you cant cut it without the hours of practice on the chops to making your playing perfectly effortless...
This certainly isn't one of Chris' strongest performances but to say he's weak isn't a fair statement. Do you know how talented Chris Pennie really is? He's a Berklee College graduate and played in The Dillinger Escape Plan. I'd agree that he could of been abit more creative and musical in this performance but this is a jam between two superb musicians, he didn't swamp it with chops and random crap like alot of drummers would do, he played pretty much all that was called for in this situation
People comparing Gil and Chris are hilarious. They're playing the EXACT SAME SONGS. Gil plays the songs that Chris wrote flawlessly, and wrote Horse Hunter and Mouth of Ghosts for Ire Works.
How can Chris be "OH MY GOD SO MUCH BETTER THAN GIL FUCK GIL"? They're both brilliant, brilliant musicians.
I agree fyz, Gil Sharone and chris Pennie are both great drummers and mucisians. Didn't know that Gil wrote the drum part for Hosre Hunter and Mouth of Ghost though.
I hate it when people say some trite shit and then say "enough said." Who thinks they're so rad that whatever assnine shit they have to say is "enough said" on a matter?
enough said my arse. new Dillinger album is wank. he is an ok drummer Stolen Babies are shit and he could just play Travis Barker's shit beats. Pennie is a beast you bitch. ENOUGH SAID you gay

It's pretty hard to "Jam" in 11/8, like Chris is used to playing. It there is anybody that can just jam in some of the wierd time signatures Chris used to play in, I would love to find them.

part of being a drummer is improvising and being put on the spot. And im not trying to sound intelligent with my words, like you, i just think you're annoying and really are an asshole
