  • I wish I could read the original versions of his stories because I think there is a great deal of meaning lost in the translations. Not that the translations are good, bless Mabel Lee and Gilbert C.F. Fong for taking up the difficult task of translating such works and keeping the integrity of the story; but they symbolism and the general culture barrier make it difficult to fully understand the meaning of his works.

  • What a great writer china has ever produced. I am reading soul mountain these days and at the end of every chapter I am obliged to say Wao man. He showed me the meaning of the Self and through him I can identify my Self which is the center of my universe or the whole universe for me.

  • it's a great man who suffered a lot.i could feel that kind of misfortune and despair......

  • why don't more people read this man?

i know that he would recoil upon hearing this, but i can't even begin to say how much works like 'soul mountain', 'buying a fishing rod for my grandfather' and 'bus stop' mean to me as a chinese person

i recommend the compendium 'cold literature' to all literate people
