The Old Testament is about the Sumerian stories where god is a jealous alien who wanted to control humans. Jesus tried to teach real spirituality where the kingdom of god is within.
For over 200 years Blake was not understood, the art critics of the 19th century believed he was mad, others "corrected" his drawings (erasing the divine phallus).
In the 1960's, when shamanism was (re) discovered, the hippies recognised and embraced Blake's work. Blake is absolutely one of the greatest English visionary artists and poets.
Very nicely put together. Blake was shocked by the Industrial revolution. Science was turning life into things - taking us from religious superstitious nonsense into rational deadness. The tyranny of the relative mind continues today as we put the final touches to our hell. Will Jerusalem come again to Albion - only when we live in the non dual mind as Buddha, Maharishi or now as Ekhardt Tolle describes it.
@burmanhands - beautifully put: Now more than ever, Blake's dictum - 'I must create my own system, or be enslaved by another man's' - seems vitally important. Particularly now when the system is so skewered, vicious, and unremitting. I believe there is a worldwide, carefully-orchestrated war on consciousness taking place. Propaganda reinforces 'the mind-forged manacles', and as far as art is concerned: 'Imagination is a glimpse of the divine' -- tell that to Saatchi and Simon Cowell!!!
I enjoyed this video. I am a great admirer of Blake and think we need more Blakes in our tired, materialistic age. But if they did speak out I think their greatest enemy would be the politically correct mob who want to steam-roll all free thought.
When Blake died, and his soul was set free... he went and still travels from star to star "holding infinity in the palm of his hand, and eternity in an hour."
George Richmond gives the following account of Blake's death in a letter to Samuel Palmer:
"He died ... in a most glorious manner. He said He was going to that Country he had all His life wished to see & expressed Himself Happy, hoping for Salvation through Jesus Christ — Just before he died His Countenance became fair. His eyes Brighten'd and he burst out Singing of the things he saw in Heaven."
@nicoheckens1 - Blake didn't do the same Jesus you do, the way you talk. Sorry. Blake does the Mystical Christ, who resides within All, not just those who give lip service, because they fear a what may happen to themn after death.
If you read his writings you will see that he believed in sin, death, righteousness and hell. Maybe you don't like that idea, either do I, but not liking something or not believing in it does not erase its existence. God has set aside a day to judge the world in righteousness, every thought, word and deed will be brought to light. Like light exposing dust. Jesus said whoever shall fall upon the stone he shall break but whoever the stone shall fall shall be broken. He also said lust is adultery.
When Blake said "This life's dim windows of the soul. Distorts the heavens from pole to pole and leads you to believe a lie, when you see with and not through the eye". He was talking about sin. With one glance you can commit adultery. It is impossible to live up to Gods Law. If you tell a lie you are a lier. Come on, how many times do you have to steal to be a thief. but thank God that he has made a way to reconcile man to himself. Taking our punishment. Repent and believe the Gospel.
@nicoheckens1 "God isn't up there you know sitting in judgment as it were on a cloud with a long mighty beard, inventing awful rules so people fell guilty all the time and so and so on. That's somebody else entirely." Where is Blake Christian? Gnostic, yes.
You are right Mr. man out of the cave. God didn't "invent" rules to make us feel bad. He did not have to think about whether rape is right or wrong. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Don't think about that to long, God forbid it may be a reproachful to your ways.
@nicoheckens1 You don't need God to tell you that rape is right or wrong. I know a lot of atheists and they don't go raping people. I for instance believe in God but feel very far away from organized religion, rather closer to Blake's or Bruno's view on life and divinity and so on... Yet I have my morals, I don't go around raping women or killing people or stealing or whatever and I would never. I respect your religious views, but you shouldn't bash them so much threatning others with Hell.
@1966BOBBY No sorry I mean the piece called "The Futility of Law" I haven't found any piece under that name, except yours". Anyway GREAT video, it really captures Blake's essence.
Blake in motion! Wonderful! Time spent living with Blake is time well spent; this era is ashamed of prophecy and especially of hope. But dreamers are out there.
Superb compilation i really got into that goose pimples and all, i can remember seeing the lost amongst us drinking the purple stuff when i was a kiddy, is that meths?
I shall have a looky for that documentary i love anything like that, people watching and nostalgia, they dont need meths anymore just a Doctor and a prescription a day, so many lost souls to drink & drugs and usually its the good guys too.
I sort of understand Blake a little better too, i just avoided as was unsure some things i read i just couldnt make up my mind about him. Thanks

Who's to say the alcoholic or the drug addict are not nearer God than the church goer or the law abider?

@nacho1560 - I believe they are my friend. I think Blake did too.

@Brichi60 oh yeah....that crowd would've gotten on Blake's nerves big time.
They get on mine too.

Blake sought salvation through Jesus Christ when he died and went to heaven. Remember that.

"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour."
These words touch something within me that no organised religion ever can.

Me too. It also goes to show that the visionary artist and mystic can anticipate the world on a quantum level, centuries before science can.
Take care friend.

So is the intial recitation actually from Blake, or is it loosely based upon his writings and thought?
THEMANOUTOFTHECAVE 2 years ago
It's a piece Blake wrote called: 'The Futility of Law'.

hope that helps.

It's Mark rylance (the actor and former artistic director of the Globe theatre) - the words are by Blake.

Well said,
it's generally the gentle sensitive souls who get consumed by the drugs and self-destruction.
And we need as many of those guys alive and well and fighting the good fight as possible.
