Muti is right. He is irrelevant. The first moment when he shoud be helping the woodwinds with tempo, he runs his hand through his hair. Then, instead of concentrating on the woodwinds, he turns the page of his score and is late in giving the cue to the violins, who of course , having no conductor, are on auto pilot and don't breathe as a good conductor would remind them to. Then we get an oratorio from Muti as to why the orchestra can do it alone! But they didn't didn't they?

I am a conductor, and you are 100-% correct. Muti has ruined opera singing, taking away the technical necessity of portamento (no, it's NOT a matter of "taste," it's a technical necessity!) and in this video blathers on about what is musically important without helping the orchestra s ingle bit. Bah! Egomaniac!

According to a great finnish conductor and teacher Jorma Panula one of the most important things is not to disturb the orchestra! When it's going well, so let it flow.

He said also to us playing in the orchestra: dont mind this gesture, it's only for the audience.
