@graphicmangagrrl ALWAYS cycle a fish tank, especially if you are going to have invertebrates. They are very sensitive to water parameters and will be the first to die if the tank is not well established.
Hi, i have glowlight and neon tetras, and ghost shrimp. Im sick of my black gravel and i really like the way your pool filter sand looks, i wanna try it. Do the tetras or shrimp mind it? Because Petsmart Employe told me that tetras should have dark gravel or else they get stressed.
@xbr0k3nhal0x I work at PetSmart and have several aquariums. In my experience, water vibration causes more tetra stress than anything else. Also, you can apply a product called Blackwater Extract by Tetra. This mirrors the conditions of the Amazonian waterways and be sure to keep your water level topped off so there's no splashysplashy going on. I have a 30 gallon tetra tank that I don't even filter. Just loads of live plants and pH monitoring. I Feed them once or twice a week.
@xbr0k3nhal0x Generally speaking, Petsmart employees are idiots when it comes to good advice. Your tetras will be fine. If you think they are stressed, buy a decor background sheet and put it on the back of the tank and they'll do great :) The black gravel, I think, is painted, which, in the long run, is unsafe.
@f1shbone Ok thanks! right now they are in a temp tank, but im upgrading to a 29 gallon. I plan on using pool filter sand and painting the back of the tank black. I also have a big piece of driftwood for them to play in :)
@famousstunners they are various crypts. They did poorly in that tank with a sand substrate and that's why I moved them. I don't recommend you try it.
Your tank is awsome! I love the live plants too. I just bought some real plants for my aquarium a few hours ago and imma post another update video soon XD
I'm thinking of using pool filter sand in my new 29 gal that isn't set up yet. You' ve had no problems with this type of sand with neons etc? I have neons, cardinals, otto's and cories in a 15 gal which I plan on eventually transfering to the new tank once the water etc is excellent.
No problems whatsoever. The only thing this sand is not good for is a planted tank. If you're planning to have real plants, I wouldn't recommend it. Mine did terrible with it. They did not hold roots well and were suffering. If you're going to have a planted tank, go with a real substrate like Eco Complete. Otherwise, this is just about the best sand you can get.
Thanks for the information! I think your tank looks great. I was wondering with the live plants.. if you placed some aquarium gravel around the roots, base of the live plants if that would keep them growing. I thought about gravel similar in color to the pool sand so that it blends in. Wonder if that would work? Is there anything specific to look for when purchasing pool filter sand? Or is it all the same thing?
Pool filter sand is too light to hold roots down. If you put gravel you will have to use enough to cover the entire surface, otherwise it will shift around and won't do you much good. Another thing is that pool filter sand is inert and has no nutrients to really support plant growth. Either go with plastic plants or get a good substrate. The only thing to look for when purchasing pool filter sand is to confirm that it has not been chemically treated and it is pure silica sand.
Guppies need some form of filtration - be carefull if you buy fancy guppies with big tails that you dont get anything that generates a strong enough current to kill em.
Pretty tank!!! how do you clean the sand? i have a 10 gal that i want to replace gravel with sand and add some live plants. please get at me ASAP and also let me know how much should i add (inches plz) thanks in advance.
hi, i have 4 female bettas, 2 male bettas, 4 guppys, males, 6 zebra danios, longfinned, 6 mollys, 2 weather loaches,6 neon tetras, in a 60 gallon tank. is this overstocked?
u could put alot more fish. well it also depends on like how much plants and structures u have in there? if you do add more fish what would be good is to put a long air stone along the back so it will put more oxygen into the water and plus all the bubbles running up the back looks amazing!
well, if it is flake food, tetras cant fit a whole flake in their mouth, i crinkle them up between my fingers and them drop them in the water, your fish will thank you!
Yeah thanks if you noticed I posted that comment I while ago and by then I already heard about that but still...THANKS! I think another reason was because they were shy (they were just bought) and they aren't top feeders and they were a bit shy with the bigger fish but they're fine now :P
Hey i have a 10 gallon tank with 6 female bettas, 2 danios (SFR) (EG), 2 neon tetra's, and 1 marbles molly. do u think this is ok or overstocked if it is wat would u say i should take out?
I would also ditch the danios altogether. 3 female bettas, 6 neons. Should be enough. Even though neons are small fish, they are very active swimmers and need a lot of room.
4 is too few, tetras as a general rule like to be in groups of 6 or larger. For a 29 gallon, you could go with a bunch of tetra if you won't get any other fish. You could probably have at least 18 in there. But again, that will be it. Don't buy more fish or you will end up overstocked.
hey dude one question is this a good community tank for a 10 gallon 6 neon tetra 1 flame dwarf gorumi 1 silver hachet 2 dalmation mollys 2 guppys 1 rubber lip plec 1sword tail or platy 3-5shrimps and like 5or6 plants?? plzz reply
No. You are WAY overstocked. You need to make a decision on which fish you want to keep, you can't have all of them. You can do 6 neons and 1 gourami, or neons with mollies, or neons with guppies, or neons with platties, but NOT all of them.
i was jsut asking bout to get my fish in 2 days beside i wont have to wory about gravel cleaing since it gunna be a plant tank any way all my levels of ph dh etc are at the right lvls
You don't seem to understand that what "overstocked" means does not mean that you have too many fish to maintain water quality. You have too many fish on a tank that is too small. Neon tetras are small, but they are very active swimmers that do best in a 20 gallon tank or bigger. The gourami can get territorial and will harrass the other fish, especially the platy and mollies. You can either listen to advice, or don't ask advice and do what you want.
Did I really say spa? I am a retard. I meant jacuzzi. Basically any store that specializez in outdoor pools, jacuzzis, that sort of thing. Pool filter sand is used in filters for pools.
Get rid of the neon tetras. They are shoaling fish and you need to have at LEAST 6 in order for them to be happy and not die of stress. If you wanna keep them, then you could get 12 more. Also, beware that by having a male AND female guppies, they will breed like crazy. 20 gallon tank you can go with at least 15 ghost shrimp.
I'm getting more neyon tetras soon, I do know they are shoal fish, I am very aware that guppies breed like crazy, I have already got two batches of 10 guppies, and they have homes.
15 ghost shrimp seems like alot but how many do you think I can put in at a time as you should only put about 3 fish in a week, how would I measure ghost shrimp and neyon tetras?
There is no such thing as neyon tetras. They are NEON tetras ;)
Ghost shrimp don't need a lot of aquarium space and they have almost no bioload (no impact on water parameters). 15 is definitely not too many. You can even get 20 if you want.
Yep, 20 at once. Ghost shrimp are like having snails. It's as if they're not even there. They hardly produce any waste and they don't need a lot of space. I had 20 in a 10 gallon tank and there was still room.
i am willing tu upgrade in the future if necesary, and this is wats been in my tank since i posted this coment =)
2 dwarf gouramis
2 plecos *2 cm each
1 pictus *3 cm
1 rainbow shark *barely 2 cm
and no, i have never EVER cycled any of my aquariums and so far ive never had any problems with them and to be honest, i still have no idea wat cycling is, if someone can explain to me wat it is, i can further look in to it ^^
i only have 2 10G tanks.....one is acupied with fish. and i use to have bass in my other 10G...my dad wont let me buy a bigger tank... and i want to know wat i can put in it.i have an idea of puting a few semi agresive fish in thier..they are all very active...i know cuz ive done some research..
in my 10G can i have,
2 pictus catfish
1 common pleco
2 or 3 gouramis
3 red tailed sharks *i dont know the exact name of them*
Your tank is WAY overstocked! Those 3 gouramis will fight each other, they are like bettas. You need to get rid of two and keep just one. The red tailed sharks will outgrow your tank, they grow up to be about 6 inches. You need to get rid of all of them. Your pleco can grow to 2 feet as well, they are impractical for small aquariums. If I were you, I would keep one gourami and get about 6 neon tetras.
Definately!!! You can't really go by that rule, especially with all the different circumstances. I have a 10 gallon heavily planted and mine is overcrowded but the ammonia and nitrates are very low.
NO! Neon tetras need at least 10 gallons and they need to be in a shoal of at least 5 or 6 fish. They are small, but they are VERY active swimmers and they need space.
I have kept corys and guppies together in a 20g for a long time and there was no problem. I have no idea what spiritseeker is talking about but I wouldn't worry about it.
are neons easy to care for i have 2 algea eaters in a20 gallon i want neon tetras how many do i get do they do good with algea eaters ( chinese algea eaters)
Neons are very easy to take care of and they do great with algae eaters. It depends on what type of tank you have, if you have a 20G long tank, you should be able to get at least 12-14.
If it's a regular 20 gallon tall, I wouldn't get more than 12, they are active swimmers and enjoy some good amount of space.
My tank has an ich problem, treating it with methylene blue and small amounts of salt, methylene blue treatment is now 6 days, I have just Began treating it with salt yesterday, I noticed the outbreak, gradually disappearing, by the way I have a 15 gallon planted tank. my plants not dying or anything, I have 6 guppies and 6 neon tetras....any advice? how long will the treatment last?
hi i have a 100gal with 80 neons and discus and about 8 ghost shrimp is that sand as a substrate? i want to use finegrain white sand as a substrate so the neons contrast can i use pots with growing medium for my plants and just bury them oh and do the plants rooted on the rocks need soil or not also are the bamboo shrimp worth it? thanks
Personally I would not get bamboo shrimp, they are kind of hard to feed. They are detrius feeders, if there is not enough organic material floating in your tank, they will starve.
Pool filter sand works GREAT as a substrate, the only thing is, if you want your plants to settle nice and strong, go with an about inch and a half to two inches of substrate.
I like that male guppy. I see you use sand as do I. I have a 220 gallon tank with about 150 guppies, 10 Silver Dollars, handful of swordtails and platys and a few tetra variaties and a peacock eel that absolutely lives his day life buried in the sand.
Salt is not needed for guppies. However, they can accept the salt and will enjoy it, but it's a misconception that they somehow require salt.
If you have a species only tank and want to add salt, then there's no real harm done. However, if the guppies are a community tank, then it's best to stay away from the walt.
Thats good to know. I'm new to keeping guppies and I was getting a lot mixed information. I didn't want to put salt in because it might hurt my pearl blue shrimp.
It is unfortunate that pet stores like PetCo and Petsmart keep promoting the misconception that a little bit of salt is good for ALL freshwater fish. It is simply not true.
+ or - 0.36g is hardly brackish and, incidentally, way LOWER than what the LFS "recommend". So either way, IF we go by what you're saying, technically you would be overdosing with salt.
Pool filter sand is actually chemically inert. It is safe to use in aquariums without affecting water parameters. Many aquarists use it with much success.
I'm not sure who recommended that, but all of the recommendations I've heard have been to add about a teaspoon of salt per gallon of water. A teaspoon is 1.4 g, which makes 0.37 g/L of water.
Actually fancy guppies are a result of domestic breeding. They do not require salt, but like I said, they won't mind it either. If you put them in a tank with plants and other inhabitants such as snails that do NOT like salt, guppies will do just fine and even thrive. I have yet to find out about problems due to lack of salt.
hey why dont u add 2 female guppies and have a little breeding happening? its a ton of fun and im getting into it (breeding fish) but i understand if u just dont want to risk overpopulation. nice tank!
it does get sucked up but 1 entire bag here in texas is like 20-25lbs for only 5 dollars... there is soo much sand it won't matter if it get sucked up... besides i used the rest of my sand as a foot massage..
Any decent pool and hot tub retail store should stock pool filter sand. It usually comes in 50lb bags for around 10-15 bucks. BE CAREFUL that it's pure and it's not mixed with any sort of chemicals. Either read the bag or ask the salesman. 100% pure pool filter sand.
Do u have to cycle the fish tank?

Do ghost shrimp fight? I have a 5 gal fishless nano planted, and the ghost shrimp seem to be harassing the amano, bamboo and cherry shrimp there.
jay942942 2 years ago
Yes, ghost shrimp can sometimes be aggressive towards other species or amongst each other during mating periods.
f1shbone 2 years ago
yo i dont like the way that shrimp is looking at me im gonna fight him.

Can I put 3 neon tetras (maybe 1 emperor tetra) and 2 guppies in a 3 gallon tank?
2155955 2 years ago
NO! Neon tetras need at least 10 gallons and they need to be in a shoal of at least 5 or 6 fish. They are small, but they are VERY active swimmers and they need space.
f1shbone 2 years ago
Can I put
6 neon tetras
2 ghost shrimp
2 cory cats
1 guppy
all in here? plz answer back
blackmath8 2 years ago
In a 10 gallon tank? No, you're overshooting it. I would stick to 6 neon tetras and about 10-12 ghost shrimp.
f1shbone 2 years ago
Can I use play sand for my 10 gal?

spiritseeker4, y cant u keep cory cats and guppys together???
BlackHawk093 3 years ago
I have kept corys and guppies together in a 20g for a long time and there was no problem. I have no idea what spiritseeker is talking about but I wouldn't worry about it.
shbycbra427 3 years ago
y not??
BlackHawk093 3 years ago
@eigeroo:
it's 1" of fish per gallon (except some other fish), not 1 fish per gallon.

are neons easy to care for i have 2 algea eaters in a20 gallon i want neon tetras how many do i get do they do good with algea eaters ( chinese algea eaters)
beastwitinn 3 years ago
Neons are very easy to take care of and they do great with algae eaters. It depends on what type of tank you have, if you have a 20G long tank, you should be able to get at least 12-14.
If it's a regular 20 gallon tall, I wouldn't get more than 12, they are active swimmers and enjoy some good amount of space.
f1shbone 3 years ago
no no more algea eaters the two i got right now are like nemesis haha i got molies and platys instead of neons
beastwitinn 3 years ago
What are your tank dimensions? Seems good, 20g jsut 2 algae eaters?
Try to get around 10 of them, depends of your tank is long or wide since they're very active. :)

dont the tetras nip the guppies fins?
6TheRipper6 3 years ago
Sometimes they do, it's true the combination is generally avoided, but I have never had problems with mine.

guppies ignore ghost shrimps? cool!

62JAS 3 years ago
hi i have a 100gal with 80 neons and discus and about 8 ghost shrimp is that sand as a substrate? i want to use finegrain white sand as a substrate so the neons contrast can i use pots with growing medium for my plants and just bury them oh and do the plants rooted on the rocks need soil or not also are the bamboo shrimp worth it? thanks
perro123123 3 years ago
Personally I would not get bamboo shrimp, they are kind of hard to feed. They are detrius feeders, if there is not enough organic material floating in your tank, they will starve.
Pool filter sand works GREAT as a substrate, the only thing is, if you want your plants to settle nice and strong, go with an about inch and a half to two inches of substrate.
f1shbone 3 years ago
is that a rubber band on that rock?? is it to make that plant stick to it?
ddtran46 3 years ago
You are correct, I had to weigh down the plants until they got rooted good.
f1shbone 3 years ago
are they grown on to it yet? how long did it take?
ddtran46 3 years ago
I think about a month with propper nutrient dosage
f1shbone 3 years ago
Oh wow loving your tank. I got a 30 gallon with guppies. They are magnificent
jack01633 3 years ago
i put shimp in with me guppies and the shrinp died a few days later...........=(
x9000222 4 years ago
You probably didn't acclimate them right or your tank is not cycled
f1shbone 4 years ago
I like that male guppy. I see you use sand as do I. I have a 220 gallon tank with about 150 guppies, 10 Silver Dollars, handful of swordtails and platys and a few tetra variaties and a peacock eel that absolutely lives his day life buried in the sand.
mj9287 4 years ago
lovely tank you got dere
baboon500 4 years ago
Salt is not needed for guppies. However, they can accept the salt and will enjoy it, but it's a misconception that they somehow require salt.
If you have a species only tank and want to add salt, then there's no real harm done. However, if the guppies are a community tank, then it's best to stay away from the walt.
vickishome 4 years ago
It is pool filter sand
f1shbone 4 years ago
Wow you have the same set up as me except I have a 20g. Do you add any salt to the tank for the guppies?
sharpie443 4 years ago
No salt at all. Guppies do NOT require salt, but they can get used to it. It is a common misconception that salt is required.
f1shbone 4 years ago
Thats good to know. I'm new to keeping guppies and I was getting a lot mixed information. I didn't want to put salt in because it might hurt my pearl blue shrimp.
sharpie443 4 years ago
It is unfortunate that pet stores like PetCo and Petsmart keep promoting the misconception that a little bit of salt is good for ALL freshwater fish. It is simply not true.
f1shbone 4 years ago
Guppies natural habitat has an average 27'C and a concentration +-0.36g/L of salt.
how can you say it's not true.
by the way the sand your using it self contains a small amout of NaCl...
peperpimenta 4 years ago
+ or - 0.36g is hardly brackish and, incidentally, way LOWER than what the LFS "recommend". So either way, IF we go by what you're saying, technically you would be overdosing with salt.
Pool filter sand is actually chemically inert. It is safe to use in aquariums without affecting water parameters. Many aquarists use it with much success.
f1shbone 4 years ago
I'm not sure who recommended that, but all of the recommendations I've heard have been to add about a teaspoon of salt per gallon of water. A teaspoon is 1.4 g, which makes 0.37 g/L of water.
dkdoll 4 years ago
Actually fancy guppies are a result of domestic breeding. They do not require salt, but like I said, they won't mind it either. If you put them in a tank with plants and other inhabitants such as snails that do NOT like salt, guppies will do just fine and even thrive. I have yet to find out about problems due to lack of salt.
f1shbone 4 years ago
hey why dont u add 2 female guppies and have a little breeding happening? its a ton of fun and im getting into it (breeding fish) but i understand if u just dont want to risk overpopulation. nice tank!

Great looking tank, but plants grow better in gravel, and neon's like darker substrate better.
HermannTheGreat 4 years ago
Yep, I tore down this tank and replaced the substrate with Eco Complete. The plants are loving it.

stewy098 4 years ago
where can u buy pool filter sand
stewy098 4 years ago
Any decent pool and hot tub retail store should stock pool filter sand. It usually comes in 50lb bags for around 10-15 bucks. BE CAREFUL that it's pure and it's not mixed with any sort of chemicals. Either read the bag or ask the salesman. 100% pure pool filter sand.
