the reason that the birch tree bark breaks and other trees dont is because the grain of the tree is goin up and down where the bark of the tree goes around the tree instead of going up and down with the tree
Dang..and here I beleived it was b/c all that fresh air, was cleaning out my taste buds, from the stinky city air..LOL...also I believed the Birch shedded b/c it was bursting with love and good medicine for the ppl...LOL . We all need help sometimes...lol
This video is so great! So much knowledge and I really love your questions, the discussion and your solutions.
I want to add one thought about the taste of food: My personal experience is, that most things especially taste better outdoors in cold air. I don't think there is really much difference in taste eating food at home or outdoors in summer...
So I think it might be the cold fresh air, that enhances the flavour...
It's actually "not" a mind-set that taste is enhanced outdoors. Smell and aroma is a form of taste. When you're inside a house you're tasting and smelling the stagnant air and stale aroma of things in your enclosed house. When you're outside everything is fresh. Not just the air. Every tree, fresh dirt among other things all give a natural aroma that we crave. When a man is hiking and he walks through an evergreen forest then an oak forest the taste, aroma changes. All better than inside.
@Animikiiasin It's actually "not" a mind-set that taste is enhanced outdoors. previous comment continued; This same concept is actually a factor in wine tasting. They will smell the wine, consume it, and basically see how it tastes with a piece of cheese.
The tree doesn't exactly grow faster than the bark. There is a soft, grainy inner layer between the bark and the hardwood that stores moisture and liquid that solidifies and expands in the winter when frozen. You can also make syrup from the birch tree the same way it's done with the maple tree. That inner, grainy layer is boiled and used for a natural anti-biotic by the Ojibwe people here in Minnesota. In June, when that grainy layer is dried up the bark pops right off if cut to make basket
@MrBushLife LOL!!! Kaawiin anikanootaanziin iw "beaver stone". Geget sa go gigiiwanigindaas. (animikii)asin. tibishkoo noondawadwaa kimiwang. (uh-ni-mi-kee). Maybe next time I create an account somewhere I'll name it beavers balls. LOL.
great video and yet again ive learned something new from you. You are rapidly becoming my favorite bushcraft channel if not already. so thanks for your effort and your time, much appreciated. greets from Slovenia
Yups, smokes goes to the bigger objects hence why most of friends like to sit opposite of me ... cause I am fatter =) heh. I make myself believe the food taste better for us up here cause of the glacier water heh Awesome video Mike!
Thanks for explaining why birch tree bark splits Mike, I always enjoy learning something new. As for the smoke...I can understand that, cool. I've learned something new again ;-)) Thanks for sharing. Take Care my friend :-))
I think your nearly right. My thoughts would be as hot air and smoke rise from the fire a slighly lower pressure air exists between you and the fire thus drawing the smoke towards you. I don't think the air drawn into the base of the fire contributes that much. I have a kelly kettle and can orientate the air intake away from me and still the smoke gets me. Anyway it's good fun to ponder these things. Of course I know I may be wrong!
What? you mean that it is not because birch bark trees are related to snakes? O_O and doesn't smoke always follow you because fire has a sense of humor? lol Some types of Paperbark trees here in Australia shed there bark to.
I must have missed that video :/ nm. I think food tastes better outside because we are all so used to eating crappy food in the woods when you make a bit of an effort it's like WOOHOO LOL.
great vid Mike. I must have missed that video of food tasting better. But I would have to agree that it would be mind set that the food taste better when out in the bush. One because you are not in ur kitchen at home with every thing at your finger tips etc. and you have to make due with what you have. But the oxygen aspect of things I dont think it would play a big part of things they are 16-21% anywere you go on earth, and the human body only takes in about 5% to sustain life. I am a EX EMT
really good video. you hit on a good point on the phsycology of eating food out side and lighting a fire has a good effect as well. as for the bark shedding question there is here in the UK the London plane tree which sheds its bark though not in the same manner as the Birch. though in the UK the Birches never peel very much like that i think i will do a video on that for ours grow somewhat differently
@mazadan Thank you Peter...I think the reason why your birch does not peel is because it takes a much longer time to grow in size. That is what happens in Sweden, Finland ect...Not sure about your area though...
@bushcraftbartons though we are on the same lattitude winnipeg i think, we have a very mild climate. our birches are slowgrowing and often here in the SE UK have a knobbly look about them especiaally the trunk. further north in Scotland they do grow a little differently a more even growth
Good stuff buddyO! Food can taste good anywhere outdoors. Doesn't have to be in the bush. Working an outside job in the winter, especially in northern climates...man that grub taste awesome. It's more related to the energy you're burning. When meal time comes you dig in like a starving dog...haha! Even a spam sandwich taste awesome...haha!
Next mystery to solve, Mike. When there is a group around a campfire in a circle, why does the smoke seem to follow one person no matter where they sit?
