Why do we need a common denominator? Why is using the "least" common denominator necessary? How do we know that the result makes sense?

Simply presenting rote algorithms without understanding is exactly why people have so much trouble remembering what they've been "taught," especially when confronted by another algorithm that is even minutely different (see comments below).

Encourage students to think, and they will learn how to function in life.
