I fixed my ground loop noise problem on my laptop by buying an after-market power supply. Specifically the Coolermaster SNA 95. The stock power supply for my Vaio had a lot of noise (I check using an oscilloscope).
where can I purchase one of these, I have a laptop that plays clear through my "Power Amp/Mixer" when running off battery only, but has loud buzzing sound when plugged in? I think this is exactly what I need, although it plays clear with the two other laptops that I ran through the same system? Do you think that I need a new power cord or one of these? please advise, thanks! Steve
Desktop PC's line out seems ok, as I pump sound out of line out to a downstairs amp and there is no hum, but my Laptops are a problem, as markkellr says, it's the power supply
hi i had this issue but i have moved into usb mixers now which have thier own built in sound card, gives the best possible sound from a laptop or pc, just a tip if you want to move into something with perfect pc sound
We had trouble with hum from not only our laptops but from the mini HP mounted in our small system. We use a sreteo D.I. box on our big system tp eliminate hum, but our small system is not affected as much from the mini desktop PC permantly mounted in the systems case.I would mention the big system uses a Mackie 1402vlz mixer and the small system uses a Mackie 808s mixer amp.
i find as soon as you get any sort of transformer in the circuit then you get hum problems, because if you run from batteries its usually ok,but batteries are too risky for a live set up )II(
Batteries? Our D.I. Box is a passive unit Do some of the other ones out there use batteries? Never seen one of those. Our laptop runs runs 1/8" cable out of it into Our DI box and 2 more cables out of the DI box into the Mackie mixer. We use 2 channels to get our stereo output. You are right batteries would be scary to use especially if the box was burried in the case under cables and such.
u schould have a look at this technic and see the diffrence of a filter....
galvanic isolation is used by the Behringer Humdestroyer HD400 for exaple... this technic actually isolates two seperate circuits and transmites the audio via air or optocopler.. so it does not effect the sound as like a filter would do...
the result will be elimination of the hum by 100 %, no filtering
i dont think that this is a very good solution, because it is a filter.
the filter will always also effect the sound itself.. also the filter canot actually eliminate the noise but reduce it as a filter works...
so when u want to realy get rid of the hum noise, u need to use a driffrent technic.. sry my english is not so good.. so it is kind of hard to explain...
i cary on my answer in a second part... (have no letters left)
no i dont think so, at the end of the day all wiring in a building arrives at the same main board. the problem is going to be the same in any of the sockets that your comp is plugged into
Hi dj freebey, usually there's not a problem from a pc with hum or noise, its the laptop power transformer that causes the problems, try plugging the nf filter between all your audio connections, and also check that the earth wire from the turntable is connected to your amp ground, best garry entropy
what can i do about the grounded speaker ports?or mic port?evrytime i record music then try try to record voice while playing the music then the music was still recorded eventhough i use headphones.please help.thanks.godbless.
if you are talking about recording on the computer, go to the microsoft sound mixer( PROGRAM; ACCESORIES ) click on properties, click recording, choose mic in or line in then you can monitor the back ground music while singing to it without rerecording the background music
another note: I have no idea what goes on inside the wall plugs of international devices--my advice is for US equipment only in the US only. What I find most amusing is that the MFR's haven't figured this out and keep trying to 'fix' the problem with new motherboards/etc... The only risk to you is the same risk ANY 2 prong device has... step on the AC cord in golf shoes and you're screwed.. oh, unless you plug into a surge protected power strip, like 99.99% of us are.
These solutions are OK--but excessive.. here's the trick, if you have this noise you likely have a 3 prong power plug.. laptops are DC devices don't really need that ground plug... replace the original 3 connector plug with the old fashioned 2 hole plug (figure 8 style) slit it just a bit with a razor knife so it'll fit. Polarity doesn't matter here either.. plug in, viola, no noise.. as a bonus, this makes it so the noise isn't present on connected midi devices as well. Cost, $1.
Leslie Harvey of the Scottish band Stone the Crows in fact was electrocuted on stage in a Swansea, Wales club on May 3rd, 1972, but not by a guitar. The culprit was a microphone that wasn't grounded
plugged into an AC current amplifier/mixing board... a laptop is a DC device.. The revelation came when the notebooks I have that are noiseless--have only 2 prong plugs.. the noisy bastards, regardless of brands.. are 3 prong. Are any of your FX equipment wall warts 3 prong? no.. because it's not needed.. it's DC low current voltage past the (plastic encased) power supply. Static electricity is your only risk (to equipment) so follow protocol and ground yourself before plugging USB/etc..
I did the same for the audio and it worked perfectly until when I connected a VGA connector to my LCD and it's started to give me that buzzing sound. Any idea?
OH MY GOD!!!! Thank you so very much!!!! I got an HP Laptop and had that horrible sound coming from it. I always used a PC and just got a laptop and sent it in for repair 3x under warranty. Now I know what to do.... Thank you thank you thank you. Ill try it tomorrow!
What can I do about noise that caused by a mp3 converting program. I use audacity which comes with the numark TT usb. I get a high pitch sound when its in record mode. How can I fix this?
You could also try a behringer hum destroyer for £15. I had earth loop problems, ac hum, processor noise. It cured everything. I also managed to get mine for £10 luckily.
some external usb soundcards deal with this you will also get better sound quility at higher volume i wouldnt recomend using built it laptop soundcard, there on ebay for as little at £20 (good tip though theres do work)
Thanks a lot,i just thught my pa system had a fault....brilhant....

The ground loop isolator did not work for me, we had to remove the ground on the power supply by using a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter.

if your in the usa try radio shack or any car hifi shop, cost about 10 bucks

@xtremekaraoke1
yes, it does. Another idea is to break the earth loop by using a unearthed socket for your laptop. Or do so on your mixer.
Of cours this is less save, but it is as unsave as using your laptop without an charger.
Also, that ground loop isolator is reducing your sound quality and isn't balanced either.
correct me if i 'm wrong

You can also buy them off ebay, I got one for $5 with free shipping.

The other thing to try is remove your earth wire from your plug its an old dj trick that works well.

or use a dedicated audio interface which will give you much nicer sound than your standard mini jack

the hum noise that is heard, this is from the supply current which vibrates (in my case) at 50khz. (uk and and ireland)

Just plug in the computer in a different socket then yoyr soundsystem and gone is the hum. You don´t need a filter

But i don't these cables? I use TRS cables
I don't think they have TRS cable in car audio shops... Do you think i should modify that after i buy?
Or just buy HumX?
dandini90 3 years ago
Behringer has a Ultra-Compact 2-Channel Hum Destroyer (MICROHD HD400)
it uses 1/4 jacks, its does the same thing
(i think)
jamesduty92 3 years ago
I don't think you use TRS from your laptop to your mixer?
Cuz the laptop sends the noise with it's signal.
If there is hum in your mixer master output. (with or without laptop connected) that's another problem.
Maybe the powersupply of the amp
