  • I was expectin' nigger hating.

  • Anyone know the name of the guy who told jokes like this- went by the name of "The Mississippi Preacher?"

  • @TheSaltwaterHobo I think his name was Grady Nutt ?

  • I love me some Jerry, but I hated me some coon hunting. I would rather be in the bed, covered up then out in the cold listening to dogs running wild after a crazy raccoon which when you tried to cook it, it looked like a dog skinned. G

  • I'm from the hills of East Kentucky and the only kind of "coon" I've ever heard of wears a mask and has black rings around its tail. Racist? Nah, just a southern man.

  • one of the best county comics ever also one of the cleanest story tellers ever.

  • my parents took me to see him live twice in my life. FUNNY

  • To those that call this wonderful man a racist really have no clue what rural southern life was about. Coon hunting is hunting raccoons. Do you have nothing better to do with your pitfull existance? this is about how was life was in the south years ago. and he tells is so well.

  • Jerry Clower was not Racist . If you so called racist idoits that says this story is based on race then you are retarted . I suggest you listen ti the story completely and understand its about racoon hunting . Coon is just short for racoon .Those that claim this is racist are really the ones that are racist .

  • Racist...

  • @funnywijk jerry was a god fearing man that love everyone....you are wrong

  • Well i am 32 old southern white boy,and also this one of my greatest memories of growing up,my dad is still coon hunting today ,my uncle johnny now that is passed away could sound just like him"knock him out john",to be honest i went last nite with my dad coon hunting and my dad was hollering wooaaa and listen to this today is awesome, thanks for the uploading,COON HUNTERS DO IT ALL NITE keep on keeping on Laney "coondog"kestner

  • I had a great flight from Atlanta to Jackson, Mississippi sitting next to Jerry Clower. I told him I first heard him while stationed in Vietnam and his stories always made me homesick. What a great God fearing man!

  • he was a great man

  • I sure miss this man. Grew up with him.

  • I had the privilege of meeting Jerry Clower several years ago. He was a true southern gentleman.

  • i love this and im only 12

  • Jerry was a great American. My entire family would travel all over the United States listening to this great American. I'm from Jackson, Mississippi and my daddy loved to tell stories and one of his idols was Jerry Clower. By the way, as a black man, I think Jerry was one of the best comedians ever. Knock him out Jonnnhn!! I was stationed in Germany and would listen to Jerry to bring my mind right back to Mississippi.

  • hahaha

  • I went coon hunting last night and this is all that i could think about allll night LMAO

  • There are at least 16 people who have a hate filled life. Good, clean humor is hard to come by these days. The only people still clinging to race....are the racists.

  • I had this on 8 TRACK!!!

  • @misanthropicagenda1 Are you fucking stupid?

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaa scary kitty

  • "Just shoot up here amongst us - one of us has got to have some relieve!"

  • do yall know where I can download this for free ????

  • My sister met Jerry toward the end of his life. She said he was a pure Southern Gentleman. It makes me very sad to see someone bring racism into this. We call "opposums" - "possums." We call "raccoons"--"coons." so there.

  • knock em out john

  • Wonderful, clean comedy from my childhood!! Nothing racist about it. Being 48 y/o & raised in the deep south I can tell you that not all Southerners are racist. As a matter a fact we were not allowed to disrespect another human in our Southern white home. It just was not Christian to be racist.......It is still not !!

  • i am 35 and i have loved Jerry Clower since i was 13!!! he is so freakin funny!!! You cant find comedians that are nothing but CLEAN JOKES!!!!!!!

  • This is probably the most listened to funny story ever told.

  • For those who don't know...Jerry Clower,simply the best.

"Just shoot up here amongst us...cuz 1 of us has got to have some relief!!"

  • I wish Jerry Clower was required listening. As a black from the South, I get the jokes. However, for those unacquainted with Jerry and have the idea that there may be a "hidden" or "code" racial aspect to his use of the term coon - a raccoon - I advise you to listen to him tell in his own words his thoughts on race and how it even cost him some fans. Jerry Clower called John Eubanks a great American; but I suggest that Mr. Clower was a great American. Give him a listen, you will laugh!

  • @nation062002 Amen, Jerry is one outstanding storyteller and comedian, I too am black, and raised on these stories. He never ever insulted anyones race to my knowledge.

  • @nation062002 people forget that country is country and all kinds of people are country and can relate to it. my high school football coach was black and more country than any redneck wanna be at the school....he used to bring his hog trailer in to be welded by the metal shop students. ignorant people think if you are country you are stupid and city folk are smart....till something happens and city folk kill each other over bread while country folk survive off the land.

  • "Souped up wild cat," LMFAO

  • Very funny!! He even in an era when the comedians were being filthy and using horrible languague...he still kept it clean!! A lot of comedians could take heed here!! :-)

  • I am 47, and grew up in the country, south of chicago when it was farmland. My lil brother is named john, and a frequent sayin' in our house was knock 'em out john! dad was from knoxville, and mom from eastrn ky. love this story

  • I love this story. It cracks me up everytime I hear it. I wish I had the chance to meet him or hear him live, but he will live on in recordings and stories

  • The first time I heard this my grandfather played it off of a reel-to-reel tape player, it's possibly the funniest thing I have ever heard.

  • im black and live in alabama. my grandad calls racoons coons and so do i.

  • mary a cowboy we need more of em'

  • coon = racoon southern slang not a person of color!!!!!!!!! if you think that then youre the racist one

  • lol love this shit me and a couple of buddys just drove home drunk from crabbing listing to this...what a great day

  • I heard this for the first time when I was about 4yrs old...He Truely was a Class Act back when it Had to be clean.....This realy takes me Home again.....THANKS !!

  • some people has some problems, maybe going coon hunting might help you understand mr.clower

  • KNOCK HIM OUT JOHN!!!

  • @IHCardsandHokies This thing's killin' me!

  • love this guy!!! my husband first introduced me to this comedian you can't find good clean humor anymore

  • LOL!!!!!!

  • i grew up listening, and watching Jerry Clower...when the title says coon hunting it is just that...hunting raccoons, no more, no less....a great comedian, i don't think i ever heard anything racist come out of his mouth.

  • I am a 32 year old black man and I grew up listening to Jerry Clower with my father . These stories bring back to memory of some of my best child hood memories. Any idiot who would say that he is talking about lynching blacks is just plain dumb and really does not understand southern humor.

  • @talesis1 Thanks for your words of wisdom about this story. It is refreshing to hear the kind of common sense you shared.

  • @talesis1 The man you are referring to isn't challenged to "understand" anything. I am a West Coaster and even I can tell he's mentally ill with hatred and racism. The sad part of that is he will never know what it's like to relate in honesty and truth. Racism goes both ways and all who participate lack compassion for anyone other than themselves!

  • @talesis1 I dig this guy too but why does you being black matter?

  • @Welaka Wombat the only reason I brought up race is because someone deemed it necessary to say this wonderful man Jerry Clower was talking about lynching blacks and calling blacks coons. Maybe if you took the time to read all the comments you would have known and understood where I was coming from.

  • @talesis1 Don't sweat ignorance, my friend. From one human to another - who cares not the pigmentation of ones skin - we all bleed red. Jerry Clower is a legend, if only in my mind. Namaste ~Anthony

  • @talesis1 Me too, my dad introduced me to Clower. NEWGENE!!!!!

  • @talesis1 jerry is loved from Bflo. NY to japan and all the other places..and we love him for that!

  • @talesis1 people are so stupid and always want to start some trouble between people. Ignorance is bliss, hate I dont understand. Thanks for posting that. G

  • this is a really funny video/story, especially the end.

  • @notredamehesamighty Douchebag

  • This and all Jerry Clower skits are nothing more than storys of rural life and upbringings. When Jerry talks he reminds me of my deceased grandmother. Seems angry folks hear what they want to and find some way to piss themselves off, have fun and good luck with that.

  • uhm maby you yankee faggots reading this should go warch a rap video or something you could understand a little better cause ol jerry clower is just making yuns think too dam hard

  • Excellent story.... My father introduced me to Jerry Clower story's when I was in my early teens, I am now 47 and my dad passed away a few years ago. I still listen to Jerry Clower to this day. Very funny man.

For those of you who see racism in his story's needs to grow up and seek professional help.

  • For those of you who see racism in this story, don't listen to "The Coon Huntin' Monkey." It's a story about a "MONKEY" who hunts "COONS." I suppose it's a metaphorical tale of white people engendering black-on-black crime? Or is it really just a story about a monkey who hunts raccoons? Careful, Yankee knowitalls, wrestling with that one might just make smoke come out of your ears... or perhaps, things are exactly as the seem to be.

  • Are you kidding me? Are you really fucking kidding me? Is there really a deconstructionist argument going on over whether Jerry Clower coon hunting stories are thinly veiled tales of lynchings? You people have too much goddamn time on your hands. For the record, this is literally a literal story about literally taking literal dogs to literally hunt for literal raccoons. If you take Jerry Clower at anything more than face value... my God, "fucktard" doesn't even begin to describe you.

  • I had the HONOR of meeting Jerry Clower at a concert the year he passed away, now I"m 6'5 340 pounds with 32 piercings, I walked up to him to have him sign an autograph he looked up at me shook my hand and said "SON LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE SHOT YOU WITH A 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN" LMFAO........DAMN he was so cool a great man

  • Jerry Clower is a great story teller man. That is a rare talent these days.

  • This video is FAR from racism!!!

  • Man you can't say anything any more without offending someone. If you don' like racist jokes don't listen, if you don't like blonde jokes don't listen and if you don't like Jerry Clower.... Go back to China ... Commie

  • STOP making EVERY thing out to be a RACE thing people. It is 2011 for God's sake!!!!

  • I AM..........THE COON

  • It's funny how stupid people can be. To think he was talking about blacks only says more about you than him. If Clower did not look or sound like Haley Barbor and insted looked and sounded like some guy from Chicago, no one would think he is a racist. Clower influenced Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvall, there is no racist jokes in their comedy. Idiots!

  • Yeah and I also remember how them Europe folks thinks they better than us. But when all Heck breaks lose, who do they call on? USA Hmm We might been apart of you back in the 1600's but that is where the comparison stops.

Europe ever gets off its lazy buts, and try to enjoy life like we do, y'all might be surprise, that its FUN!

  • that man is laughing entirely too hard in the background

  • One of the funniest gentlemen to ever tell a story hell, I'm blaq and from the country and if u don't think this is some funny shit u have 2b dead or fucked up in the head awwwwww, kiss my ass

  • I am a 50 yr old black man from Ky. Jerry Clower along with Jerry Reed, Ray Stevens and The whole HeeHaw gang kept me in stiches for most of my teen years. I have never heard a racist word from any of them. I don't know what they said in the privacy of their own kitchen but it was always funny stuff just like Richard Pryor minus cussin'.

  • Funny story which brings back many memories from the 'baby boomer' days of the 60's & 70's ~ Thanks for posting this~!

  • but at least he had the option of whooping all them dogs and walking off if he wanted to...It was strickley left up to the coon. Classic comedy my borther...classic.... LOL!

  • LOL

  • We called 'em Souped-Up Wildcats!!! Love it!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i will say that jerry was true whereever you saw him. I guess if some one can twist this to be racist,. i guess ur related to far a kin(yep yous far a kin to me). I eat peanut butter which was invented by a black man(most peanuts born in the south). If i eat peanut butter makes me racist please send Mr. Carver to me or bury me next to him-lest I get hungry waiting for rapture. Yous people cry racist but allow yous bros call em n...... in your rap sorry music and not say anything. yous racist!!

  • I likes me some jerry clower coon huntin stories, good clean family humor does not exsist these days.

  • @xgalore77zerha268 fuck you you dumb bastards. If you think he sucks you don't know what it means to be raised in the south.

  • @williamephillips go have a nap you whiner

  • one of the greatest!!!

  • "We called 'em 'souped-up wildcats' in Amite County." WOOOOOO - THIS THING'S KILLIN' ME!!!!"

  • Man I thought this was going to be an actual "COON" story. : /

  • Jerry Clower and J. Garland Mckee were my dad's two favorite comedians when I grew up. I wish there were comedians today who knew how to make people laugh without sex jokes, bodily noises and garbage mouth.

  • 15 sniveling little tree-hugging PETA idiots.

  • Comment removed

  • Jerry...you are sooo missed...RAT KILLIN's..hahaha..Rat killin's were often sources of entertainment around the barn area..they would eat up the corn and feed. To those idiots out there that don't know that in the south that COON is short for RACOON are two bricks shy of a load. Sportin' Chance...it's a way of life.

  • RA-COON...Coon for short...only nasty stupid people would think otherwise...Jerry was a wonderful story teller.

  • I was raised with hunting dogs (birds, not coons), and the concept of feeding them something like "dog bread" was unheard of. They got table scraps, and the idea of paying good money for food made especially for dogs was unheard of. The very idea would have not just raised eyebrows, but would have brought on hoots of derision. Great story anyway!

  • My dad loved this story!!! He was a coon hunter. I miss you daddy!!!!

  • I love how eloquently he speaks. He paints wonderful pictures in my mind!

  • Please don't come down here, its horrible. All of it. Everything below Kentucky, Northern Virginia, and as far west as Oklahoma. Trust me. That's the briar patch I live in.

  • @FalconFan23 Thank you for trying to keep them Yankees out of here, but this winter is inevitably going to bring them south

  • I seriously don't get it... is it suppose to be funny? And when he says coon... does he mean what I think he means?

  • @warlordgorgutz1 he means a coon as in raccoon get your head out of a racist fog ....

  • @oneclassytouch I was asking what it meant, how is that racist?

  • @warlordgorgutz1

you know being southern, a coon hunter, and having black friends I'm seriously offended that you would think

coon meant anything other than a raccoon. In fact, the other meaning never crosses my mind except when someone with a racist mind set brings it up.

  • @Virginialogging Can your comment be any more of an oxymoron?

  • @Virginialogging - some people are just ignorant. if they knew as much as they think they do it would be dangerous. wait, it's dangerous the way they think now...

  • @Virginialogging you know, that was my point exactly. I hunted the southern swamps following my redbones.

Climbed a few trees, all most fell out of one laughing so hard at the coon whippin a friends Walker dog while mine were pups. Real funny story and I'm sure you'd get a kick out of it.

  • @Virginialogging This is a thinly veiled metaphor for lynchings, what are you talking about

  • @Bluedeanie you are a thinly veiled metaphor for a human you should die so that you dont pollute the rest of the world with your offspring

  • @Virginialogging A coon is a coon... People can not change the name of it.. Jerry was in no way Insinuating that he was talking about a black person. I am a coon hunter too! I also have many black friends too. I guess he could have called it a Raccoon, but here everyone talks about going coon hunting.

  • @warlordgorgutz1 Your probably the guy who crys racism every time someone sees a black dog car or anything else and talks about it. When you become obsessed looking for racists you become one yourself.

  • @Mopargocar Actually no I could care less about racism. What I was doing was asking what he meant, considering I'm not a Southern American and I don't use the word coon for anything... and I've never heard anyone call raccoons by that name... so I was pretty sure he meant the racist term. Sorry I offended you ?

  • @warlordgorgutz1 Southern American? You rode the short bus to school didn't you? If you ever heard Jerry Clower you would know that racism is far from his comedy.

  • @warlordgorgutz1 i hear it in the north all the time you just gotta hang out with the coon hunting side. you never hear anybody say "raccoon huntin". but na jerry wouldnt say anything offensive coon is just short for raccoon with anybody unless your a no good skinhead. thats what makes it look bad.

  • @warlordgorgutz1 no you just have a racist mind thinking he is only talking about blacks

  • @Southernjuggalo63 Ok, well besides your obvious retardation, how is this even funny? Maybe I just don't understand it because I'm not sixty years old.

  • @warlordgorgutz1 lol your the one thats retarded and cant see the humor in it i think you must be a yankee and have never been coon huntin

  • @warlordgorgutz1 lol many people hunt coons in history when animals wasnt as convenient to going to store and P.S. why are you on a southern american video and also redneck is a good thing thats why i have it tattood on my neck its a compliment so thankyou

  • @warlordgorgutz1 also remember US has pretty much rebuilt all of western europe over 50 billion dollars spent on starting europes economy back but im sure you ignored that if you dont like americans dont watch our videos its common sense

  • @warlordgorgutz1 Gotta call B.S. on that statement there sir... i'm from about as far North in the United States as it gets... and I own a fine pack of coonhounds and run em every chance I get... never mean anything racist when i holler "YEEEEAWWWWW!!! lets get us some coons fellas!" So why dont you keep your non-american opinions to yourself son

  • Sounds like Jerry's character has been pretty well defended here already, but just for the record--read his autobiography, "Ain't God good!" He clearly called out the hypocrisy of founding a private Christian school just to avoid sending your kids to an integrated public school. It was mighty strong words, and he said it in the 1970s.

  • Hilarious. I haven't heard this story in years. My dad was a huge Jerry Clower fan. We used to listen to hours of Jerry Clower on road trips when I was a kid. Thanks for posting.

  • but it wasn't a coon lol,lol,lol

  • lmao sum of these city slickers think he mean huntin black folks? lmao dumb asses

  • There wasn't a racist bone in Jerry Clowers body. Only a moron could accuse him of it. People that use the race card all the time or 10 times outta 10 bigots themselves. It goes both ways. I hate a damn HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • some people................

  • Punishing parents for not sending children to school and hateing people that havent gone to school has ended real good 'ol boy wisdom.

  • Nope, not racist, RAC-coons folks. Like one would make a raccoon cap out of. This is deeeep woods southern humor. My stepfather was from the hills of Tennessee, and he had a similar accent :D He was a freight railroad engineer, and wore "ohver-hawls" (overalls/coveralls) to work everyday. Brings back a lot of memories :)

  • simply the greatest humorous southern story ever told.

  • Knock him out Jooooooooooohn!

  • It's idiots like what's commenting here why racism can be brought into a discussion about Jerry Clower. It's the south and it's the way they talked. It's part of the culture of the south. It has nothing to do with the KKK or racism.

Jerry Clower has never, to my knowledge, said anything racist in any of his material. Not like George Lopez, who is racist against black people.

  • I was raised in the South, before y'all judge what is and isn't happenin' there go on down and see for yourself the Love and Wonder of what is truly the South. Not all of us were raised by hateful people, some more of us were raised by loving caring parents who showed us the Love and Mercy of God and our fellow man. Please see for yourself what really happens down home. I for one don't cotton to them KKK people. Lived amongst black and white folks who showed what true caring and love is.

  • @journeyer58 I knew some people who grew up with Jerry, they said that on stage he was exactly the same as he was off stage. He was a caring and compassionate man who gave to all the people in the area where he lived. He didn't discriminate, just did for whomever needed. No prejudice and bias, no hate-filled comedy. A true man, who showed his fellow man love and care. People like Jerry Clower took to heart being their brother's keeper. He was a man passionate about the real South.

  • I can relate! Born and raised in NC! Love everbody!!! And Jerry Clower was a part of our entertainment way back when!

  • @journeyer58 I agree with you I was born and raised in Mississsippi I wouldn't trade it for the world. Yes we have had a rought past but we have come a long way. Like you said before you judge give us a visit!

  • @journeyer58 I was born and raised in Tennessee and I couldn't have put it better.

  • I'm not from the south, neither is any of my family, but this cracks me up. My mom has one of his cassette tapes and we'd listen to it all the time in our old Jeep. This story and the story about college football are my favorites.

  • Thanks for posting this recording. A dear family friend passed away on Christmas Eve and they played this at his funeral today. He loved his dogs and grew up coon hunting as a boy. RIP our dear Monk.

  • lord jesus why is it a few "idiots" always have to ruin something? this is one of the most clean natured comedians ever to do it.stop ruining everything w/ your damn stupidity! Nobody gives a shit whos racist or who aint! not everybody expects people to like everybody! my daddy told me a long time back that what another man eats dont make me shit! so quit worrying about who dont like this and that and worry bout your damn self and you'll get farther in this world! ruined this funny tale 4 this!

  • I'm from louisiana, i have black friends, never once hated them. not sure if thats racist or not. not everyone in the south is full of racist hate. i'm more than sure more than half of the south isn't racist at all.. but all you hear about now a days is the racists on TV and the specials on the history channel about the KKK doesn't help our image. on behalf of the south none of what the TV or other things say about us is completely accurate.

  • @LocomotiveRider Yeah its pretty sad. People getting along isn't going to make the front page or probably anywhere in the paper because it just doesn't sell. Some dope yellin racist crap probably will because people will at least look and then jump to conclusions and assume... its almost to waste of breath to even argue. More often than not you can prove someone wrong and they'll still believe what they want to.

  • @Sayrej way too true... if people opened their eyes instead of listening to reporters who only get the inside story on what racist propaganda act went down then they might see the south is a better place than depicted

  • 1971.... I was driving a Taxi from five in the evening, to five in the morning, and going to school. One morning about daylight, I was driving home, listening to WWL in New Orleans, when Dave Nimmo played this....I was laughing so hard I ran off of the road!

  • finest comedian of the old time southern life style that will ever be. I grew up listening to him on the way to go coon hunting with our hounds best times of my life

  • I was honored to see Jerry Clower perform at the Houston Livestock Show years ago. A funnier man never lived. His humor was clean and you could listen to his stories with your mother and not be embarassed. I'll never forget the way he was dressed when I saw him perform in Houston. He was wearing a BRIGHT YELLOW suit. As 2handsforchrist said, he was a very large man. With his yellow suit, he looked for all the world like a schoo bus.

  • Racist? Anyone who says this is racist, doesn't remember that a man said to Jerry, "I liked that story about the n***** in the tree!" and Clower said, "That was my COUSIN!!!"

Also, he pissed off his neighbors by shopping at an integrated grocers owned by an African American man. Clower said something like, "Send Cronkite to film me dead in front of the store,a free American, killed for shopping where he wishes."

  • This isn't racist people coon hunting is coon hunting it has nothing to do with black people.

  • Met Jerry back about 20-24 years ago when he was in Fl (I think it was Ft Pierce) and he was opening a show for Ricky Skaggs. I was backstage with my brother and we were just running around when I ran right in to Mr Clower. He was a MOUNTAIN of a man to a lil punker like me...he was a giant! Red pants, red coat and suspenders, white shirt and a huge bunch of gray/white hair....what a gentle giant...too bad I can't remember if he said anything to me or I to him!

  • Good Ol Mississippi Man I love Jerry Clower grew up listening to him and still do today LOVE IT

  • I am 20 year old college student. I first started listening to jerry clower, lewis grizzard, etc years ago thanks to my dad. Not many people my age listen to the awesome comedy of these comedians. This type of comedy will never be replaced!

  • This is the Jerry Clower story I remember most!..Must have been 1965 or so. We were on the road from Georgia to SC. Am radio was big then anyway,,,years before cable TV being what it is. One of my favorite memories...momma, daddy, brother, me and sister... all laughing out loud at such times. Watching TV doesnt bring up such memories though.

  • I remember riding up Hammond Hill with my brother when this story came on the radio.... First time I had ever heard it.. can't exactally remember how old I was then but it's more of an age that I'd like to be that the one I am now...

  • I always have and still do listen to his comedy cause it still makes me laugh like hell

  • I agree, I'm 43 and used to listen to Jerry Clower all the time on the radio when I was kid, all his stories were true and funny and he must have been the son of a Baptist Preacher or something like that cause he talks just like one!

  • i love this guy...i remember driving with my dad and uncle the first time i heard one of his standups and i remember having an outta body experience from laughing so hard i couldnt breath...

  • I am 44 years old and cant tell you how many times that my dad played jerry on the old 8 track player in our car and i would just sit in back laughing so hard i would cry he was the best

  • proof that jokes can be funny without cuss words

  • your right 100%

  • Grew up listening to these great stories! Fabulous!!!

  • ive been listening to this man for over 20 years and he stlll justabout makes me pee my pants listening to him ............what a storyteller............a legend.

  • so am i i love this shit............

  • so am i i love this shit.............

  • LMAO!

  • I LOVED Jerry CLower. I'm so glad he shared such laughter and joy with so many of us.

  • I LOVE Jerry Clower. He was a true southern gentleman and his stories brought and still brings laughter to many lives.

  • I live about 5 minutes from where Mr. Jerry is buried and where he lived. Born and raised listening to him. I still coon hunt the same areas where he told about in his stories.
