@cubex55 Sorry but I have to say I played the game 10 times better than you when I was only 7! :D For real, you discover only half-way in the game that you can make a lot of points (generating candies) by throwing bubbles at nothing and then throwing bubbles again to get them. That's the basic point-making strategy of the game! And you waste a lot of special items too! :-/
In world 3, Ocean World, in stage 3-3, you have a box where all the enemies are. When you finish the level green peppers spelling the word "IN" appear. I don't know wether you have to get them all, or just the uppermost line of peppers, but if you do you get access to a third secret level you bypassed on this walkthrough - Nightmare world. (you go there, you finish it, and then you get back to ocean world)
I just can't remember wether this is only doable in 2 player mode. But you should check.
When I was a kid, I never realized these were the dragons from Bubble Bobble. Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands were two of my favorite arcade games too
@streeTkiDwannaBe Hehe, same here, and I didn't either. Parasol Stars was easily my favourite (Atari ST, ~5 years old), and I was quite an arcade fiend back in the day but I rarely played them in arcades. The bosses in Rainbow Islands always scared me shitless though. Fucking giant spider gave me nightmares I swear. Still beat the tosser.
@robdazombie I only recall only having to get the top peppers in the word "IN" to actually access it. But even so it's extremely hard because you have to have something to jump on (or playing with a friend) in order to get inside the box and the upper line of peppers.
That world's boss was a monster with head, hands and feet, and a heart. No body. Was a pretty neat world!
I don't think there is a snes version. I think it only came on on nes, which really sux, nothing like the amiga version. The PCE (tg-16) version is really good and with a 2nd button, it's much easier to play.
Nah there isn't a SNES version. I bought the NES version recently (which I believe was PAL only?), it's ok, but the Amiga one looks much cooler. I also got the Game Boy version which is ok, but a little hard to make out at times.
The best way to play this game is with a TG-16 or a Tg-16 emulator. The nes version is horrible. I hope it wasn't Ocean that did it, I don't remember.
This game rocked. Great memories of "co-op" play on the amiga. Tossing my friend with the umbrella. Bwa-ha-haaa! DIE DIE DIE! ... I love games where there's actually points and a highscore.
Why aren't you throwing bubbles to get the bonuses? There are levels where there are a hundred k. in bonus points. Is it just to go through it quickly or don't you know they exist?
I remeber getting to a secret world much harder than the ones on this video. You get to it by getting every collectible inside the big square box on ocean world (at 15.00 mins). Has anyone got past this world?
That was how we accessed the Nightmare World. You'd go there and then back to Ocean world. I see that the guy who played this managed to do bubble world and hell world, but not the third secret world.
Excellent conversion of the NEC PC Engine/TG-16/PCE GT/TurboExpress original. Only quirk being it's not quite as bright and vibrant as the original. Although, it's pretty close.
Heh - they emulated the instruments of the PC-Engine version(which this is a port of) instead of doing a rearranged version. Not surprising though since the PCE is PCM and period base like the Amiga, albeit tiny sample size in comparison. This port though is missing one or two sound channels of the PCE original. The colors looks good for the most part, with a few areas darker and/or missing some colors.
Wasn't it collecting 3 water symbols at a certain point that takes you to the secret world... I don't remember which level it is but it's pretty early on isn't it? There was some other secret later on as well wasn't there? (Some kind of door?). I had a dodgy pirate copy where you could choose to play with unlimited lives so it got played through many times!
Yes there is an earlier secret level. At the end of one of the levels, collectables will appear. These will be set out to resemble the letters "IN". You had to collect all of those to get to that secret world.
It was very difficult to get to this secret world in single player mode as there isn't much time to collect the collectables before it sends you to the next level.
does anybody remember how to get to the secret level which is on the third island? i remember doing it with two player once but i cant remember anymore
wow I remember playing this like it was yesterday, I even remembered the triple star that gives the secret levels and some stages. I use to play this all the time until my brother broke the dick cause he was retarded.
MAN do I need to practice. This guy BLOWS me away, getting farther in the game than I've ever got without even getting killed, let alone using continues. And he makes it look so easy.
Woah. I'm actually impressed that the Amiga is able to run this game with the same fluidity and graphical power as the TG-16. The music is of the same quality as the console version. Back when PARASOL STARS was released on the TG-16 my friends had pretty much abandoned their Amigas. So I had always assumed its technology was dated by the time 16-bit consoles took over (Genesis, SNES, TG-16).
Perhaps, but he's talking about how smoothly it runs (ie no slowdown or jitteryness) and how close it is to the arcade version. Given an amiga had around 1mb of RAM and no hard drive by default, it doesn't really compare to an arcade cabinet's tech specs even back then.
well, still, there are games with fancier gfx running just as smooth (and even smoother) on the same hardware. just look at elfmania and turrican 2 for such examples. So I don't think this game properly shows what the amiga is capable of...
Definatley agree with you there - but still, these are arcade conversions and it's said that Rainbow Islands was one of the best arcade conversions on the amiga. It's more about accuracy than anything else.
yeah, so I've heard. Rainbow Islands along with Silkworm and Rodland are said to be the best arcade conversion made for the amiga. Too bad I've never tried any of the original version, so I can't really say anything about it :p
There is no arcade version of this game. And the Amiga is faster than a TG16, which has an 8 bit cpu. The Amiga 500 (low end Amiga) can display 32 colors, but any pixel can be any of the 32 colors. Most older systems had limitations for the number of colors in a given 8x8 or 16x16 grid (like maybe 4) to make up for lack of video ram. The 1200 can display thousands of colors.
If you're referring to the TG16, it's 15 colors (plus 1 common) per 8x8 tile and each tile associates with one of 16 palettes. 241colors onscreen for the background. Sprites are also 15 colors each and with their own 16 palettes. Another 240 colors. That gives you a straight forward 481 colors onscreen *without* any raster tricks, extra processing, or extra memory. Also, that 7mhz 8bit cpu has no problems keeping up with the 7mhz Amigas. Don't kid yourself.
Actually the Amiga is superior to the Genesis in many ways (even though it 4 years older). But your mates probably liked jump n run games more than adventure, strategy, etc...
BTW, have a look at "Jim Power", "Shadow of the beast", "Agony", "Elf mania", "Lion heart", "Project X", "Turrican 3", "Stardust" etc.. for some really impressive games for a hardware released in 1985 (many years ahead of it´s time)
