@BBEEAANN1, wrong, cost is everything in the military. I maintained these planes for 8 years inside and out. The thought that every part of the plane is paid for is insane. Trust me, every part I ordered had a dollar figure attached. A models did require more time then B and D however, bottom line, maintenance cost is what doomed the Tomcat. Those maintenance hours you are referring to cost the Navy in the personal to perform them.

E' un aereo figlio della sua epoca: quella della guerra fredda dove si ceracavano le superprestazioni in volo e missilistiche senza fare troppa economia. E' il piu' bel caccia di sempre, per me, ha una linea inimitabile. Affascinante anche perchè opera da portaerei. Bellissimo con le leggendarie insegne del VF84 Jolly Roger.

Ricordo quando passavo i pomeriggi a giocare a USNF '97, il videogioco che mi ha fatto conoscere il mondo dei caccia imbarcati. Nonostante l'avessi visto solamente lì per molto tempo, dovevo farmi violenza per non usare l'F-14 quando era disponibile. Era proprio come piaceva a me: grosso, cattivo, armamento pesantissimo (e con una gittata bestiale) e nonostante tutto riusciva a conservare un agilità spaventosa!! ...e come se non bastasse, ha la silhouette più bella di una donna!
Il Jolly Roger e' anche la bandiera pirata (con il teschio e le ossa incrociate bianchi su sfondo nero) che secondo la tradizione della Royal Navy (la Marina inglese) viene issato in segno di vittoria sulle unita'.
Famoso il Jolly Roger issato sul sottomarino atomico HMS "Conqueror" mentre entrava in porto e che aveva affondato giorni prima l'incrociatore argentino (ex USN) "General Belgrano".
è l'aereo più bello del mondo è una leggenda a tutti gli effetti come lo squadrone jolly roger che lo ha utilizzato portando il famoso teschio sul f14
obsoleto non credo niente affatto....potrebbe operare ancora per molti anni!! è ben superiore dell'f-18 come caccia! il problema è una altro: macchine costose come l'f-14 purtroppo oggi non servono più perchè gli scenari di guerra sono cambiati,gli aerei operano sempre più per attacchi al suolo e l'f-14 nn può più esprimere il suo massimo potenziale..in poke parole alla marina.. non serviva più!! molto triste...è un aereo superlativo sotto ogni aspetto!
Ciò che dici è del tutto vero, aggiungi che la manutenzione aveva raggiunto oneri pazzeschi per gli std economici militari di adesso....che non sono quelli dei mitici anni 80.

if i was a navy pilot id beg to fly a F-14..they have the highest kill record out of all current and past fighters..they just a sexy multi role beast!!! my father was a pilot he flew in training OPs against american pilot in F-14's and he sed they were not easy to target. for a big plane they were nimble and quick of the mark and with long range AA abilities it made it very frustrating for other pilots ..and yes fear factor is a big thing lol id hate to come across one

porca pupazza non sapevo fosse stato ritirato.Era il piu' forte intercettore a lunga distanza, aveva un radar in grado di seguire contemporaneamente una moltitudine di bersagli. Veloce potente ed anche agile per i combattimenti ravvicinati... ma per i caccia nemici avvicinarsi era quasi una chimera; Infatti era dotato del missile Phoenix con una gittata di circa 200 km semplicemente ineguagliabile per qualunque altro caccia.
Tomcat, pride of US Navy, better than its predecessors though big and sluggish, its got one thing, "fear factor", f-15 eagle aside....damn its one beautiful plane it is...despite its critics....
There is a reason why the F-15 didn't replace the F-14. The F-14 out performed the F-15 in real world testing. I remember talking to the pilots of my squadron about it and they said the F-18 was the only plane to show better overall performance. 20 years after that conversation it was the F-18 that did replace the F-14. Sorry F-15 fans, its a good plane, but it aint better than a Tomcat.
Non vorrei sembrare antipatriottico(DIO mi scampi da questo) ma, sinceramente, mentre i Top Gun volavano con il Tomcat, noi producevamo gli Aermacchi 326/339 e il Fiat G91Y che, con tutto il rispetto, non possiamo certo paragonare all'F-14 o all'F-15 Eagle
At the time of service, it was a great plane. Easily took over the F-4's role on the carrier. The F-18 was a great replacement though, it's much lighter, cheaper, and more effecient. Even the F-18 is being replaced by the F-35. The reliability however was low however.
Why was that necessary? Sorry, but I agree with the governments decision of retiring the Tomcat, it is way too old, and when it uses its radar, everyone knows where it is.
