Great idea Michael. Mean words hurt. Yes you can brush off a few, but when they are constant they damage your self -confidence. Why? just because someone was not taught good manners. If you can't say something nice, DON"T say anything. Still a good rule.
It's the constant attacks, yes, and the always and again hitting on the same spot, using cheap shots and every mean stab and jab in the book, that makes a bully's assaults so painful and degrading for the victims. And they have to be able to get personal help & support from YouTube.
And what you say, about manners, is exactly what want YouTube to show & pull through to those who bully: That a certain amount of good manners is expected from everyone here, to get along with each other.
Thank you so much for your support :-)! Please feel free to share this video with your friends; Peter and I want to get as many opinions and feedback on the issue as possible.

You know, blocking a bully is, for the individual user who gets harassed, a well working method of getting rid of a bully, indeed. One click, and you got your peace again. For the time being.
Still, this guy then will either move on, in search for the next victim, or will even return with a fresh channel, so he can continue harassing the same person like before ...
I think YouTube also has to be part of dealing with people who violate the rules and hurt the members of the YouTube community. So the victims see that they are not alone in their struggle, and possibly being so again and again. People who have been in exactly this situation have told me their stories, and they had seriously WISHED for support and help from YouTube, but did not get any, and so finally gave up their own channels, as they could not take it any more.
I agree with you that it will mean some effort YouTube has to come up with, to establish a new line of taking action in this cause. So be it! The YT network has evolved so much from the beginning days, and with this growth and evolution, there also come new responsibilities along.
Hate comments and bullying are always painful and hurting for the recipient, but only rarely "qualify" as subject for criminal prosecution. That is why so many victims stand alone, but still need help!
Not everyone can put away insults / derogative remarks etc. easily, even if they "only" come online. These things simply may hit and hurt a person, just like an insult etc. that someone said offline / face to face. And it also is not everyone's thing to fight back, especially not as bullies then use the big benefit of their ultra coward way of offending people: With no official reprimands 2 fear, and accepting no "Stop" from their victim, they continue to harass, for the fun of it.
If someone is so weak they're hurt by insults typed out by someone on the internet and can't even type a response to fight back life is going to be pretty much unbearable for them. Anyway, how do you know there are people like this?
In real life, you have the support and protection of the community, if someone violates your rights or hurts you. It may not be easy, but there are rules and laws, and the respective authorities you can call to your aid in case of need.
On YouTube, you are on your own. You'll have to defend yourself, but the bully is in a comfortable position, because you can hardly fight back. Blocking, yes; and then the Bully's return with a fresh channel. Or friend of his teaming up on you.
Plus in real life there are fewer chances that someone will try to hurt your feelings, simply because they will be afraid of getting beaten down in retaliation
I do not say that everyone is hurt in the same amount by insults / hate comments / mudslinging campaigns. Still, those who ARE hurt, and can't or simply don't WANT to fight back on that low level, need the reassurance by YouTube that not they, who play by the rules, but THE BULLY, who violates them, is the one who has to change something - or has to go.

Bullies only harm others emotionally or physically for fun and their actions only give benefit for themselves: the amusement which they gain for themselves. As for their victims, there is no gain, just: pain, hatred, vengeance and agony. Why we need fools hurting us anyway? There is any gain by accepting something which is harmfull like bullying and defamation?
Very well spoken; you hit all the right spots there! Still, these structures are there and work for the bully, and so he (or she) will continue with what they do.
And although we, being witness to all this, cannot realize for ourselves what the bullies really gain, we see and feel the pain of those who get victimized.
Those victims need our support and help, AND YouTube's, by tackling the bullies, giving out clear signs and, if (and as often as) needed, consequent punishments.
If is to think about, the youtube network got filled with some users comming with lame excuses saying cyberbullying is "free speech". One of them is a girl called FurryFoxee who started a group called "Anti Anti-Troll Organization" made to defame people who don´t accept cyberbullying and come with that fake propaganda of "free speech" for the bullies. Also, even kids are bullying adults now, on my work a kid bullied a partneer of mine for fun.
Just as in real life, on the Internet, the right of free speech and freedom of personal development ends, as soon as you inflict the rights of others by that, or harm them. Those people who proclaim this philosophical axiom always out themselves as being only partly literate, as they don't know about the full contents of that principle ... or, more likely, conveniently decide to overlook / not mention it.
Still I believe they made / make similar experiences, being hurt themselves.
Peter, my dear friend, you know better than this. I applaud this gentleman's efforts, but you know he's just walking in my footsteps and he'll wind up getting screwed over in the same ways I got screwed over. Why not just be honest with the man and tell him that YouTube doesn't give a rat's behind and in fact actually ENCOURAGES the bullying that goes on here. It's PROFIT for them, which is all they care about. YOU KNOW this. Tell him the truth.
I am so sorry to hear this, and I hope that you will be able, more and more, to get over those traumas you received.
And all the more, you, as well as all the other members of the community, do not deserve to be maltreated and abused here on YouTube, by bullies and haters, who violate those rules that were set up to make YouTube a fun place!
If you like, please share this video, so we get as much feedback as possible, and YouTube may realize that they should and CAN do something.
yeah too much junk to go through just write a complaint agents someone if you can find it now a days. it was easy back in the day but not anymore. and your right a person should look into it not a bot. and those hatters using it just for fun should also be blocked as well. a nice and easy thing they could do is a ip address block to the site. you can change your ip but only so many times with certain internet providers. peace. gregg
I'm glad that you agree that a personal contact in return is needed in cases where victims seek protection and support. Technical problems can possibly be handled with automated help tools, at least to a certain degree. But the true asset and base of YouTube's are its members. So this is where action is needed, in form of personal support, help and care.
But: Suspending s.o. = one click. Each & every time. No big deal, if, in case of need, the reporting s.o. can be done properly.
Abuse of such a tool is possible, of course, like e.g. with the emergency brakes on a train. But you know what's in store for you, with the latter, right? Trouble.
So why not have a Community Strike waiting for anyone who thinks that this emergency device, that is there for people who really need it, can be used for yet another stupid and insensitive joke?
I want YouTube to show people who deliberately act anti-social on a Social Networking Site, that they work on kicking themselves out.
the difference between people abusing the emergency brakes on a train and pressing a button on youtube is that you can't get fined or taken to court, and you can create a new account that takes a minute to do...so you can't get suspended on your main account. I don't support bullying online or offline... i just wonder if youtube cares enough....
That is the point. YouTube simply has to start caring enough in an amount that those "hardcore anti-socials", who really come back with new accounts and start harassing people again, will get suspended again, as often as needed. Getting suspended and opening a new account is a violation of the Community Guidelines in itself already, and a kickout reason without bullying anyone. And a refined reporting tool makes spotting these guys easier.
Blocking works, but only leads to the offender searching fresh prey. As long as there us no clear "NoWay!" signal from the Community, but only a one on one struggle, the bully will always win. What's being blocked by one guy? There are legions of fresh toys out there.
So let's start giving those guys some headwind. Make things easier and more supportive for victims, who need help, and tighten the reins for those who ignore rules, disrespect people and hurt others.
hahhahhhahaha!!!! yes, make things easier for those poor, poor victims who need help because someone on the internet sent them a message saying what a piece of shit they are blah blah blah
I've had those many times and i dont care because im not a pathetic, spineless piece of shit. if someone is actually hurt in any way by someone swearing at them on the internet then god damn, that is fucking pathetic, so are these new measures, and so are most of the people commenting here.
You are right in a way, people who are intimidated by insults may well be pathetic, but should that exclude them from the community? No, of course not, we need to remember that what is everyday speak to some is frightening to others. I know of people who have given up using the site because of abuse. Theat's sad for us all.
Firstly, what community? This is no community, just a big bunch of people who happen to watch videos on the same site. you said it yourself, people intimidated by insults on the internet are pathetic, so fuck those people. and i dont see how some people leaving youtube because of abuse is sad for anyone. explain to me how that is sad because im at a loss, id be glad that those pathetic morons are gone.
One of my subscriptions complained to YouTube about a nasty hater, and they terminated his account. The problem was that he just kept opening new accounts every time he was cut off. With another subscription, I took on the hater myself and sympathetically discussed his problem, and he stopped.
"I took on the hater myself and sympathetically discussed his problem, and he stopped"
This is exactly what I think YouTube has to do when it comes to dealing with bullies. Make them see that their actions do not go unnoticed, but decide about them having to go - or being able to stay, if they change their ways.
And to manage this, meaning to offer a second chance, and to push through sanctions the bully blows this chance - neither of this can, in general, be the task of the victims.
hahahaha thats well harsh dodoman13 get a life ya joke !! if you really want to argue with someone argue with me you mess. Well done for what you do and nobody should make anybody feel uncomfortable while on youtube or the internet in general :)
I think it's great that Michael is willing to help other people and give some adivce. I'm so sorry you have had to go through harassement Peter. That's just wrong. Why can't people treat each other decently?
Thanks for the "funny", but no thanks for the "important men". The issue at hand is important, the sad results it yields so often, and the need for a change that is there.
I can't say if things will become well if they'll become different, but they'll HAVE to become different, if we want things to get better.
Good ideas for a solution. Bullies have many motives and psychologies. But that's their problem. Decent folks having to put up with them is our problem--and YouTubes.
2nd lesson in life: They don't hurt physically. But there's more to life than just the bodily pain. Haters and bullies work like the Chinese Water Torture (no offense to my fellow Asians ...). It may take time for the effect to kick through, and the amount of damage varies. But personally, I say, that even one victim is one too much, and we can't have that. Especially because a good deal of those who get bullied may start bullying others themselves some day.
Truedantalion: Ever happened to misinterpret someone's words and feel hurt, then realize the man meant something else and suddenly feel ok? What you call emotional damage I say it's a mere reaction. If you react to what some twat on the web hurls at you, how will you react when your boss manipulates you with kind words to work weekends for free??
Cos those two are one and the same thing, and if we agree that the less you react - the less others will control you, then we might as well conclude that bullies are the best damn thing that ever happened to Youtube!!
I dont know if that is a joke, but if not, i want you to know that bullying is simply torture of those weaker thank yourself in the hope that you "SOMEHOW" become stronger.
Great vid! Bullying is a real pitfall for some users here. It is very easy for some to become discouraged so much that they discontinue use of this network. They lose the benefits of making such great friends.
I think this is a good attempt at getting YT's engineers to put their minds to some sort of rule set for expected behaviour here.
A dreadful feeling to be attacked and alone. Being able to resolve the problem quickly and with ample support is comforting. No one should have to suffer, especially alone and in silence. Much needed information unfortunately. ~Peace ~

Great vid! Bullying is a real pitfall for some users here. It is very easy for some to become discouraged so much that they discontinue use of this network. They lose the benefits of making such great friends.
I think this is a good attempt at getting YT's engineers to put their minds to some sort of rule set for expected behaviour here.
Thanks!

You are pathetic.

A dreadful feeling to be attacked and alone. Being able to resolve the problem quickly and with ample support is comforting. No one should have to suffer, especially alone and in silence. Much needed information unfortunately. ~Peace ~
