you'd think that a GM would have charisma, humility and be honorable. instead there was a lot of talk and tripping over his own words. all the trade marks of a big lie being told by a con artist
If there's one thing this old con-man does know how to do, it's talk talk talk.
I'm amazed anyone actually believes him.
Apparently there's always going to be plenty of people desperate to indulge in hero-worship; you could make up ANY bullshit story no matter how ridiculous & get paying followers. There's William Cheung, Ashida Kim, L. Ron Hubbard....
I believe that Ip Man was a smart guy who taught WC principles differently wether his students were tall and large or small and thin. Different range, different weight, different strategy.
I like GM Cheung because he doesn't sound like a bully, and he is not afraid to admit that Bruce Lee might have been better at Wing Chun when they were younger. He has also been doing this for about 55 years!
GM Cheung is around 70yrs old and still bloody good!! studied under him and his brother David (wonder what happened to David after he left for QLD) both have their own styles and very effective. The modern generation is getting bigger and stronger, hence some of the traditional techniques must be modified, reason why GM system is much different to others. Has anyone used the entry technique in a real situation? it is an owesome technique will be devastating in UFC!!
I don't doubt that he knows how to fight and he knows Wing Chun. But I seriously doubt his claims that Yip Man taught him the "real" Wing Chun and no one else, not even his own sons. There are many lineages of Wing Chun. I've seen some that look very similar to his. There's nothing wrong with doing something different, but don't claim that you alone have the secret and teach the only real Wing Chun.
im not saying that his claims are true however, i train in his system of wing chun and if what he teaches is a lie, its an extremely effective lie. if he invented the foot work, central line and blind side principles himself, he's done an amazing job. btw, yip man died before either of his children began their training so whos to say he wouldnt have taught them this style of wing chun
Cheung did not invent these things. They have different names of course. But if you've ever seen Foshan Wing Chun, you'll also see footwork similar to his and fighting on the angle (central line). I don't know exactly where he got these things from, but it was not taught to him secretly by Yip Man. Shortly before Yip Man died, he filmed himself doing the forms. They are exactly the same as the way I was taught, not the way Cheung does.
It makes no sense why it would be different. And even if it was different, why would he pick William Cheung to be the one to pass it on to? Wouldn't it have made more sense to have passed it onto someone like Wong Shun Leung who was older and more involved in the school than Cheung was? I'm not saying he doesn't know Wing Chun or that his system isn't effective. But the bit about him being the sole heir to the true Yip Man Wing Chun is a load of bullshit.
Ip Ching started formal training with his father 10 years before his father died. That's at least 10 years worth of formal training from Ip Man, compared to Cheung's 2-4 years.
If Ip Man really did know a superior, "traditional" version of WC, he would have showed it to at least a couple people besides Cheung. SOMEONE would have been show it....like Ip Ching & Chun, or Wong Shun Leung. It's INSANE to believe that Ip Man ONLY showed the "1 true WC" to Cheung.
Also, there's nothing in Cheung's footwork system that's not in the Wooden Dummy set of regular WC, nor is Cheung is the only person who knows about the center line, or "blind side principles".
The only thing the Cheung system offers is an ego-stroking "I'm special!" story about HE (and thus you, his paying student!) knows a "super-secret traditional kung fu!". It's a marketing ploy, nothing more.

I mean I would prefer any of the students in the 1950s.

Did he say 'soul hier'? Maybe he was in 1958. They he left Hong Kong. Then maybe another one was chosen.
Anyway, I would prefer GM Cheung over Leung Ting or the Yip brothers any day.
Or any of Yip Man's strudents that came out of the 1950s. The later ones don't impress me.

Do you think Yip Man filmed them in the right way, or the way he taught his students?
