Christianity calls all people to be children of God. It is only those who chose to accept it who become the true children of God. It is true that not everyone is a true child of God, but it is also true that everyone can become children of God. Exactly. Only those approved by myself, the church i go to, and the way i was taught the Bible are beloved by God. Everyone else is under the spell of the Devil. Exactly.

@FallaciesDetective I think so. But remember, it is God's kindness that leads us to repentance. If God hadn't said, "I love you, I've written your name in the palm of My hand," then I never would have turned towards Him.
@memorybook99 John 1:12 is not a directive but is descriptive...Romans and Ephesians etc show how salvation happens... John, the Gospels and Acts are narratives - not instruction books. The New Covenant didn't start til Jesus died. Othewise - we 'earn' salvation by how 'receptive' we are - back to works!
This "First Love" life (I John 4:19) is a life lived grounded in the Ground of All Being, a life conformed to the pattern of Jesus Christ, a life empowered by the Holy Spirit -- a life that is a participation in God's own life that transcends the "ups and downs" of our individual lives, a life that participates%2
Thank you Fr. Nouwen for reminding us that we need to reclaim that first love, and realize that in our love and the love that we recieve we experience the reality but also the finitude of our own love; hence we are invited to authentically and sincerely respond with all our might to that first love that calls us his own beloved. May the soul of Fr. Nouwen rest in peace.

John 1:12 We need to receive Jesus and then we are given the right to be called the sons (children) of God. It's not just an automatic given.
