Kampfer got blown apart by the Alex's guns because Kampfers are designed with VERY thin armor to make them faster. And to be fair, the Alex didn't get destroyed by a Zaku II, it was a Zaku II F2, an upgraded zaku.
Kampfer really was one of the best suits they ever put in this series. It's just so sad how anti-climactic its destruction was. Cheap shots from Alex's wrist-mounted machine guns. Honestly, I don't think the Kampfer would have lost in a really fair stand-off. Especially if a better pilot ran the Kampfer. That thing has more thrusters than the whole fleet of NASA space shuttles. xD

Against the Gundam Seed version of GM, the Strike Dagger, Misha would duplicate the same kill ratio as in the UC fight. But against the Dagger '105', "ouch" comes to mind, if the pilots aren't experienced or have clocked alot sim. time. Of course, the Daggers have proper beam weapons that are better than the Guncannon version. The Strike, Duel, Buster, and Aegis Gundams would eat him alive with their phase shift armour.
The Kampfer only failed its mission in war in a pocket because the pilot didn't have good intel on the target.
If it was known that the alex in full armor could withstand the chain-mine and that it had a powerful Gatling gun hidden in its arms, it would of went down differently as the kampfer, although made with sucky standard armor, was extremely nimble even compared to a gundam. (If only luna titanium was available to the zeons...)

You see, Misha actualy DID have a few bazooka shots left. He landed at the roof with left shoulder bazooka untoched, took it away from shoulder, aimed it at Alex.... ***few frames after*** he was holding a shotgun in his hands.
@Cabalbl4 I always wondered about that cause the bazooka held more rounds. Honestly with the power of the shells and quantity I can safely say they would of ripped the Alex Gundam apart even with the armor but for some kinda fail he didn't use it or wasn't aloud to cause it would of destroyed the story line.
@TekkaSage Just like how for the sake of the story. Those GM pilots were so easily wiped out. They didn't even move. Like they were just free falling without any idea of how to work the controls. It was ALL for the story.

The Kampfer was a new model that took them by surprise so they never had a chance to react which also happen to the Kampfer in the fight with the Alex.
@Rawsilver Not true. Those are primary ground combat units dropping from the center of the colony that is zero g. If they were ti sue their weapons while in free fall, the recoil could of sent them farther from the fighting or into each other and or the Gray Phantom.
@TekkaSage With the Alex a more powerful version of the original, it has without a doubt the same electromagnetic coating thus making it equally or more nimble than the original. I am also sure it has the data from the original since it was going to be used by Amuro. I am also sure that Christina could of dodged the shots and would be visually awesome to see but time constraints probably forced them to cut it short.

Stardust Memory was the best Gundam Sidestory IMO! Why could the rest of the storytelling in Gundam be that good?!
I still find it laughable that the Feddy pilots did NOTHING but float and die. They didn't even turn or fire or anything. I know they aren't the point or focus of the story but I hardly believe that not one of them was able to get a shot off.
I think it's more than likely that at least one Feddie got past Misha's initial barrage and then took him on, only to be butchered wholesale. After the first few GMs go down, we get an overhead view of the city with ordnance apparently arcing about - signs of a firefight? Also, the last GM was far from helplessly floating downwards - it was taking cover behind a pillar, and might have been engaging Misha in a cat and mouse battle. Cheap kills don't explain Misha's ammo being depleted so soon.
His shotguns didn't have a whole lot of ammunition and his panzerfaust were one shot weapons. The first shotgun was used on the defense force and the one Gun Cannon, the second on Alex. The Panzerfaust and bazooka were used on the GMs.
My main beef is that they didn't try to maneuver or anything. When the GM Gun Cannon bought it, they continued to just float. There wasn't even panic and there was ample time to do it. These were Gm Snipers which are not slouches by any definition of the word.
imho, for a close commbater newtype like Char, the Kampher would be perfect, even with 2 beamsaber, he would take down anybody, with that high mobility. (like in the Gundam Evoilve, where he is against his fantom red zaku)
on the other hand, for mass production, it would be unprofitable. The Gelgoog was fine for that role, even better than those GMs, but they have run out of skilled/veteran pilots
I'm sure he would have enjoyed making 200+ notches in the shoulder armor plate of that Kampfer back in some Zeon hangar... if he was alive, that is. :P
No matter the situation though, the Kampfer was fighting well with rather severe handicaps imposed on it and, well... the NT-1 got lucky? Had the Kampfer's armor been a bit thicker, closing in to beam saber range wouldn't have been a problem.
Well, to be fair, charging head-on against anything isn't much of an idea so much as it's suicide. He probably should have tried to maneuver a little.
Still, he did do fairly well despite having such limited ammunition. And he did trash most of the Feddie soldiers... Had the Alex met him any earlier, it'd be toast and a half.
Ah well. Beautiful anime, and I really think they should've used this song in it. It fits so, so well.
It was design for hit and run missions. How was Misha to know, it had a hidden gun in its arm? He did the best thing but trying to make the fight a close combat one as even a Gundam's armor would be useless against a beam saber and Kampfer speed would have given the edge.
As far as I know a beam sabre is the best thing against a Gundam, seeing as there is no viable defense against it. The Kampfer is fast, but it cannot outrun bullets, and the only way out was to try and throw off the enemy pilot's aim, which Misha, most probably due to being drunk, couldn't, didn't or did not think of doing.
As for hit-and-run, are you referring to the Kampfer or the Alex? The Kampfer was the blitz unit, while the Alex was used as a testbed for Newtype technologies.
Kampfer isn't design for blitz tactics. Unit has sacrificed armor protection in exchange for many thrusters and verniers, making it very fast and maneuverable but resulted in high fuel consumption and a limited operational time.
yes but the difference between blitzkrieg and hit & run tactics... attacking force is avoid sustained combat at all cost in hit & run, too inflict as much damage on a target and immediately exit the area to avoid the enemy's defense or counterattacks and blitzkrieg is too break through defense lines too seize control of territory.
'Blitz' means lightning fast, or a synonym of that, I'm pretty sure, thus 'Blitzkrieg' meaning 'lightning fast attack'. Hit and Run is just get in there, attack, and get out. XD
Kampfer was pretty cool, but it was a design made a little too late in the OYW. Kinda like the Galbaldy and the Gyan, good effort, but Zeon was filled with backstabbing Zabi's and the Gundam stomped all over the place. Ahhh well...Seig Zeon.
The Kampfer probably wasn't built for sustained combat but it's still one of my favorite suits. I would have loved to seen a pilot like Norris Packard or even Shiro Amada pilot it.
It was build for Combat it's a assault use MS.Due to it's mega usage of fuel it couldn't fight very long.But I think they just thought with this they can eliminate the enemy before it goes out of fuel >_>
There are many reasons why Misha lost this battle, but one of the dominant ones I think is in that he used up all his useful weapons against the lesser machines (his bazookas and sturm fausts). If he'd been less tactful, and targeted the Pegasus Class, to drop it on the pursuit units, risking catastrophic colony damage, he could have handled the Alex at arms-length. Seems to me Kampfer is suited to storming big cumbersome targets anyways.
You're wrong entirely. Kampfer is not a scout at all. It's meant for covert and quick strike operations. It's easily dissembled for purpose of being made behind enemy lines to strike critical points of interest. For that, it requires fast speed while still being able to pack a punch.
Kampfer removes much of its armor (include the leg skirts) for increased mobility, and also sacrifices beam weaponry in favor of your standard shelled. After spent shells are finished, it discards dead weight
The Kämpfer was given only the smallest possible amount of armor needed for protection against the relatively harmless suits that made up the bulk of the Feddies' MS troops. This in combination with its massive thrust output made for a speedy and maneuverable mobile suit designed primarily for hit-and-run, strike-at-the-fore missions. It's designed to cause massive damage, then get away. Using it in the matter it was used here was incorrect; standing and fighting the NT-1 was not an option.
Well, the beam saber is a good thing to have, considering that anti-beam coating hadn't entered Federation mobile suits yet. (Zeon had such technology on the Gelgoog's shield).

That likely wouldn't have mattered. Gundarium alloy has been known for extreme amounts of hax when it comes to protection. (Although it also seems to fail pilots at the strangest times, like at the end of 0080. I won't give the specific examples because of spoiler protection.)

I don't think that would've mattered. What really saved her ass was the Full Armor. The Chainmine was stopped by it. I doubt that the bazooka would've done much more.
But after he crushed the armor with the mine one bazooka shot was all that needed. And it is doubtfull, that the Full Armor can withstand a concentrated 'one spot' bazooka impact. The chain mine explosion was powerfull, but not concentrated. It can be seen by the fair undamaged head, which was not covered by the armor. By the way, a guncannon series with Full Armor were easy prey for bazookas in 0083.
that was a new GM Cannon. They didnt have the same kind of armor gundams have. Bazookas didnt do anything to Guncannon in the show, even when it took direct hits. Gundam walked through a nuclear mine field in texas colony. Misha was on a suicide mission from the start. Kaempfer had no weapons that would have kept the Alex down for long aside from the beam saber x_x
Actually the units are Mass Produced Guncannons. Compared too the RX-77 Guncannon their armor is rice paper but compared to GM's and Zaku's their armor is quite powerful

onigojira's correct. Kampfer and his squad mates were well aware of the futility of the mission. However, it does not excuse kampfer having lost. The biggest issue was the obstacles prior to the battle. Kampfer expended all it's ammunition, and was left to fight Alex with what little he had left. The biggest fault was Misha underestimating the prototype armor, and being left with only a beam saber. None the less, under different conditions, I believe Misha would have won.
I'm not sure if Misha could have won even with the entirety of his equipment. Although Chris seems to be trained for zero-G combat (and seems to display it when she actually tries piloting the Alex, and niether lives up to her reputation or simulator results) I dont think Misha would land enough hits with his heavy armaments.
His best bet would have been to make the Alex waste its ammo, but he had no knowledge of its hidden weapons, he cant be blamed for being taken by surprise.
That's a good point, but I think that Chris is at best, a test pilot. I don't recall if she had any dormant newtype abilities and could not fully utilize Alex. Under the premise that Misha is an Ace, I think he has a much better chance.
Look further, and her lack of combat experience can be seen against Bernie in a simple MS-06 Zaku II. Though the odds lay in her favor, she shows much struggle against a rookie pilot.
She doesnt seem to have any newtype abilities, I'll agree. But for some reason I remember somewhere its known that she's compotent. Her simulation results seem to reflect this. I used to think Alex just wasnt outfitted for atmospheric combat, but I've since realize its probably due to a total lack of training.
Misha did dodge the vulcans pretty well.. but the extra armor and the surprise element of the gattlings I think still put him in an unfavorable position. Alex is too strong.
Considering how that Kampfer spent most of its ammo and energy on the Federation forces beforehand, it's not surprising. If that Kampfer still had shotgun or rocket ammo, he'd have won.

I think it's more than likely that at least one Feddie got past Misha's initial barrage and then took him on, only to be butchered wholesale. After the first few GMs go down, we get an overhead view of the city with ordnance apparently arcing about - signs of a firefight? Also, the last GM was far from helplessly floating downwards - it was taking cover behind a pillar, and might have been engaging Misha in a cat and mouse battle. Cheap kills don't explain Misha's ammo being depleted so soon.

His shotguns didn't have a whole lot of ammunition and his panzerfaust were one shot weapons. The first shotgun was used on the defense force and the one Gun Cannon, the second on Alex. The Panzerfaust and bazooka were used on the GMs.
My main beef is that they didn't try to maneuver or anything. When the GM Gun Cannon bought it, they continued to just float. There wasn't even panic and there was ample time to do it. These were Gm Snipers which are not slouches by any definition of the word.

imho, for a close commbater newtype like Char, the Kampher would be perfect, even with 2 beamsaber, he would take down anybody, with that high mobility. (like in the Gundam Evoilve, where he is against his fantom red zaku)
on the other hand, for mass production, it would be unprofitable. The Gelgoog was fine for that role, even better than those GMs, but they have run out of skilled/veteran pilots

No matter the situation though, the Kampfer was fighting well with rather severe handicaps imposed on it and, well... the NT-1 got lucky? Had the Kampfer's armor been a bit thicker, closing in to beam saber range wouldn't have been a problem.

Well, to be fair, charging head-on against anything isn't much of an idea so much as it's suicide. He probably should have tried to maneuver a little.
Still, he did do fairly well despite having such limited ammunition. And he did trash most of the Feddie soldiers... Had the Alex met him any earlier, it'd be toast and a half.
Ah well. Beautiful anime, and I really think they should've used this song in it. It fits so, so well.

It was design for hit and run missions. How was Misha to know, it had a hidden gun in its arm? He did the best thing but trying to make the fight a close combat one as even a Gundam's armor would be useless against a beam saber and Kampfer speed would have given the edge.

As far as I know a beam sabre is the best thing against a Gundam, seeing as there is no viable defense against it. The Kampfer is fast, but it cannot outrun bullets, and the only way out was to try and throw off the enemy pilot's aim, which Misha, most probably due to being drunk, couldn't, didn't or did not think of doing.
As for hit-and-run, are you referring to the Kampfer or the Alex? The Kampfer was the blitz unit, while the Alex was used as a testbed for Newtype technologies.

Kampfer isn't design for blitz tactics. Unit has sacrificed armor protection in exchange for many thrusters and verniers, making it very fast and maneuverable but resulted in high fuel consumption and a limited operational time.

yes but the difference between blitzkrieg and hit & run tactics... attacking force is avoid sustained combat at all cost in hit & run, too inflict as much damage on a target and immediately exit the area to avoid the enemy's defense or counterattacks and blitzkrieg is too break through defense lines too seize control of territory.

Kampfer was pretty cool, but it was a design made a little too late in the OYW. Kinda like the Galbaldy and the Gyan, good effort, but Zeon was filled with backstabbing Zabi's and the Gundam stomped all over the place. Ahhh well...Seig Zeon.

It was build for Combat it's a assault use MS.Due to it's mega usage of fuel it couldn't fight very long.But I think they just thought with this they can eliminate the enemy before it goes out of fuel >_>

There are many reasons why Misha lost this battle, but one of the dominant ones I think is in that he used up all his useful weapons against the lesser machines (his bazookas and sturm fausts). If he'd been less tactful, and targeted the Pegasus Class, to drop it on the pursuit units, risking catastrophic colony damage, he could have handled the Alex at arms-length. Seems to me Kampfer is suited to storming big cumbersome targets anyways.

You're wrong entirely. Kampfer is not a scout at all. It's meant for covert and quick strike operations. It's easily dissembled for purpose of being made behind enemy lines to strike critical points of interest. For that, it requires fast speed while still being able to pack a punch.
Kampfer removes much of its armor (include the leg skirts) for increased mobility, and also sacrifices beam weaponry in favor of your standard shelled. After spent shells are finished, it discards dead weight

The Kämpfer was given only the smallest possible amount of armor needed for protection against the relatively harmless suits that made up the bulk of the Feddies' MS troops. This in combination with its massive thrust output made for a speedy and maneuverable mobile suit designed primarily for hit-and-run, strike-at-the-fore missions. It's designed to cause massive damage, then get away. Using it in the matter it was used here was incorrect; standing and fighting the NT-1 was not an option.

Yeah, but he had expended all his other ammo on the grunts, so all he had was the beam saber, maybe if he had saved those explosives for AFTER he had knocked off the covering he might have stood a better chance.

That likely wouldn't have mattered. Gundarium alloy has been known for extreme amounts of hax when it comes to protection. (Although it also seems to fail pilots at the strangest times, like at the end of 0080. I won't give the specific examples because of spoiler protection.)

I don't think that would've mattered. What really saved her ass was the Full Armor. The Chainmine was stopped by it. I doubt that the bazooka would've done much more.

But after he crushed the armor with the mine one bazooka shot was all that needed. And it is doubtfull, that the Full Armor can withstand a concentrated 'one spot' bazooka impact. The chain mine explosion was powerfull, but not concentrated. It can be seen by the fair undamaged head, which was not covered by the armor. By the way, a guncannon series with Full Armor were easy prey for bazookas in 0083.

that was a new GM Cannon. They didnt have the same kind of armor gundams have. Bazookas didnt do anything to Guncannon in the show, even when it took direct hits. Gundam walked through a nuclear mine field in texas colony. Misha was on a suicide mission from the start. Kaempfer had no weapons that would have kept the Alex down for long aside from the beam saber x_x

Actually the units are Mass Produced Guncannons. Compared too the RX-77 Guncannon their armor is rice paper but compared to GM's and Zaku's their armor is quite powerful

onigojira's correct. Kampfer and his squad mates were well aware of the futility of the mission. However, it does not excuse kampfer having lost. The biggest issue was the obstacles prior to the battle. Kampfer expended all it's ammunition, and was left to fight Alex with what little he had left. The biggest fault was Misha underestimating the prototype armor, and being left with only a beam saber. None the less, under different conditions, I believe Misha would have won.

I'm not sure if Misha could have won even with the entirety of his equipment. Although Chris seems to be trained for zero-G combat (and seems to display it when she actually tries piloting the Alex, and niether lives up to her reputation or simulator results) I dont think Misha would land enough hits with his heavy armaments.
His best bet would have been to make the Alex waste its ammo, but he had no knowledge of its hidden weapons, he cant be blamed for being taken by surprise.

That's a good point, but I think that Chris is at best, a test pilot. I don't recall if she had any dormant newtype abilities and could not fully utilize Alex. Under the premise that Misha is an Ace, I think he has a much better chance.
Look further, and her lack of combat experience can be seen against Bernie in a simple MS-06 Zaku II. Though the odds lay in her favor, she shows much struggle against a rookie pilot.

She doesnt seem to have any newtype abilities, I'll agree. But for some reason I remember somewhere its known that she's compotent. Her simulation results seem to reflect this. I used to think Alex just wasnt outfitted for atmospheric combat, but I've since realize its probably due to a total lack of training.
Misha did dodge the vulcans pretty well.. but the extra armor and the surprise element of the gattlings I think still put him in an unfavorable position. Alex is too strong.
