Yes indeed, it is the rythm of the brake pump exhausting thru the loco's chimney. For more strange examples see my 'I'm on the road again' video clip.
Although an impressive-looking machine, the locomotive (as originally built) was not a success, and this - along with the later decision to 'dieselise' BR - meant that no more of the type were ever built, so 'The Duke' remained the sole member of its class. Fundamental design errors and undetected deviations from the drawings were made during construction, which combined to prevent 'The Duke' from ever achieving its expected performance in BR days.
It hauled the tour train from Leeds to Preston, but when attempts where made to remove it from the train, the brakees locked on and I understand, could'nt be released. To remove it, the engine was shut down and the brakes released manually. The DUKE was then used to tow the dead Diesel off the train to a spare track and proceed northbound without it.
57601? Scrapped? You gotta be kidding! The amount of tours it hauls each month is proberly greater than the amount of times 71000 gets out and about in a year!
What is that beat when the loco's standing still? Westinghouse?

Surely you know its history? I saw it in Barry scrapyard in 19** And I saw its first run on the GCR!
