  • this video amazed me.

  • the video is incredible ... i like it..

  • I love 6:57- 7:41. Too many quotes to laugh at.

"What are we doing? Oh, just hanging out with our grammy."

    "What What?"

    "What What!"

  • Thank you TedtalkDirector

  • Thank you for sharing.

  • Good video.

  • I don't believe that this is true. I would like to see an analysis of its rate of failure compared to its efficiency, then I will be convinced. Simply having "Adam Sadowsky" claim that it is "real" is not enough to prove anything. We need evidence that it was not staged, it is the practical thing to do.

  • fuck domino day, this is better!

  • And the point of this talk was?

  • @knifenewbie456 to brag about what a good engineer he is.

  • that video was boring

  • the music vid has at least 2 clips, as far as i can see ;)

  • @HermanPaulsen i found three (two transition clips)

  • I made a rube goldberg about 1/200th that size for engineering class and it was A LOT of work.

  • Best Music Video Ever ! Genius

  • Awesome video. I love such machines.

  • Oh my Ford the mother of all TIMs.

  • wowowowowowowwwwwoooooowww!!!

  • Soo amazing

  • Brilliant ! Good luck and Godspeed human race. What will you come up with next ?

  • The video way outshined the song.

  • catchy, but way to rip off Louie-Lou-I.

I can't count how many times such chord progressions have been rinsed and repeated. what is the fascination with them?

  • @xjustamem0ryx they sell.

  • @ViennaPrincess23

    ah man's fetish for money.

  • @Propolandante Its difficult but if you pause exactly right you can see both the light in the curtain and the light behind it next to each other. Its just a reflection. Its still one take, no special effects.

  • @sparklymage I have paused it.... you can't see both because it's a reflection, they just merge 2 videos together. It's not like they went from video A to video B in just one frame, they merged them. As the curtain opens, they used a computer to switch to B. Look at all the split-screen videos YouTubers use to talk to "themselves". Instead of it being a left/right split, the split starts in the middle and follows the edge of the curtain. Not too hard with Adobe Premier or the like...

  • what a waste of money. i thought future entertainment its not based on old and expensive stuff to do.

even if you have to money, why on earth would you destroy a piano???

  • Very clever, 5*!.

  • @jjmm112 7:40 for the wiiin !!

  • Great song great video, its nice to see musicians being creative again.

  • That was an amazing R B machine, but the song was kinda dull in my opinion.

  • @PeeeU

Its hard to concentrate on the song when the video is far more interesting.

  • great job

  • that was... quite an elaborate R.B machine...

the song is not my musical cup O' tea but that's ok.

  • 471 = Like

    35 = No likey

    WHAT IS NOT TO LIKE?

35 = fucking hard to please dopes!

    :)

  • Absolutely flabbergasting.

  • WOW!

thatz why I subscribe 2 ur channel TED!

thumbs up people!! [to d video.. not to my cmmnt ¬¬]

  • To put the debate to rest (I've seen many many interviews with this guy and the band on the subject of "cuts").

There is one edit in the video. This guy probably keeps quiet because he feels it betrays the spirit. lead singer Damian says there is one cut because the top floor of one take was the best, and the bottom floor of a different take was the best. The machine worked perfectly 3 times. It was one take "in spirit" and could have been one - but edited for quality of camera work.

  • @feverpa

    blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/03/behind_the_scenes_of_ok_gos_rube_go.html

  • ADAM!!!!! you rock, dude. -BW

  • How many ENTPs did you have to kidnap to make that?

  • Pretty cool machine.

  • NICE!

  • Incredible.. 80-something takes!!.. I could not imagine having to reset that so many times.. absolutely brilliant

  • While good - they could have easily done it using CGI and it would have taken 1 take and no one would be the wiser.

  • @shagster1970 that's less cool

  • great contraption, and for those haters saying this vid is useless...i believe the 'E' in TED stands for "Entertainment", which i think this video has accomplished very well ;)

  • @MDSguy full of trolls here... dont u think?

  • @MDSguy E= 'engineering'

  • @redonred17 No, it's actually "Entertainment" ;)

  • @MDSguy You mean there are haters of TED?

  • Ah so that explains the cheering at the end.

  • Another youtuber found a few hidden cuts so I think his mention of wanting it all in one shot is a bit misleading but the video is still simply awesome

  • @akirapills767 I can't imagine they would have used cuts if the guy said they hadn't.... why bother lying about it? Are you sure there were cuts?

  • @MagicianOnAMission 9:42 the piano in the background on the right jumps a few feet and there's a light behind the curtain at 10:08 that isn't there once they open. I wouldn't say he was lying, just not being completely honest

  • @akirapills767 Fail. It's light reflecting off the bowling ball onto the curtain, not a cut.

  • @sdaciuk

    youtube.com/watch?v=fV23EVZ-nc4

sorry to crush your dreams little one

  • @akirapills767 the piano doesn't jump, it's just an optical illusion from going through those metal bars real fast (have you never noticed that sort of stuff when you're walking by a fence?)

And the light seems like a reflection.

Like I said, even if they did make a cut; neither of those two would be it, because those are two of the worst places to do a cut in the video. to many things that would be impossible to get the same way twice (the fold of the curtains, the angles through the bars)

  • @GRNoam hahaha this is getting a little crazy but believe what you want and again, watch this if you haven't

    youtube.com/watch?v=fV23EVZ-nc4&feature=related

  • @akirapills767 It is truly amazing that they managed to film two runs where everything happened to fall in exactly the same spots, so that they could splice them together. And how amazing is it that it was those two particular takes that were the best ones to splice. Really, see if you can find something out of place either side of the pipes. It's amazing!

  • @MagicianOnAMission watch?v=fV23EVZ-nc4

It's pretty much confirmed. This guy knows his shit.

  • Pretty amazing piece of work! People who say this talk is useless missed the point. Think things through, make plans, keep it flexible. That's the process of accomplishing, and learning while doing.

  • Haha Wow! That's so cool!

Looks like a lot of work.....and a lot of clean up x_x Good job! :]

  • Very nice transfer of energy (with help of course) :).

  • one of the best videos of the year... amazing contraption!

  • amazing camera work!

    !

  • @SuperAtheist Yeah, I can only imagine how hard it was to memorize all the movements and not bump into anything or let things go out of the frame. Very well done.

  • loved the song, and the video!

  • video wasnt done in one take, freddiew knows everything!!

  • it actually wasn't in one take. FreddyW did a video pointing the transitions out.

  • amazing machine!

  • This vid may cause some "insider" pride,

but none of the complexity or "meaning"

is seen in the final vid. All I, as a simple viewer,

see, is another stupid and pointless vid.

Why are you on TED? What have you proved,

expanded upon, or improved? Waste of time.

  • @Airave TED stands for Technology, Design and Entertainment. I would say without a shadow of a doubt that this video definitly falls under the heading of entertainment. Quit being a dick, get off your high horse and enjoy it for what it is.

  • @ThroneofEden You're welcome to your opinion,

just as am I. That is just my honest opinion.

Don't know why that bothers you so, or why

you want to call me names. I don't enjoy it

and feel it makes false premises. If I hit a nerve,

so be it. Think about what I'm saying. That's all.

    Peace!

  • @Airave Your opinion is, I'm sorry to say, retarded, and the way you present it makes it seem like you are trying to push it on others. This video falls under ALL three of TEDs letter. It's a Technological and Design and is a very Entertaining.

Please, don't make yourself seem stupid. I know it seemed smart to you when you decided to comment, but you're going to regret it in the end.

Five stars/Thumbs up on the vid for me! Was an amazing music video!

  • @Airave Technology Entertainment Design. TED. You are entitled to your opinion on anything apart from what things actually are. The is one of the few things that fall under every category of TED. You didnt hit any nerves, you were just wrong about the objectives of TED.

  • @Airave

There is so much meaning in that vid, it's bloody staggering. It's a beautiful meeting between art and science, technology and entertainment, as well as ambitious drive to achieve met with whimsical, purposeless fancy. It has improved our lives by giving us entertainment. To see such a thing as a waste of time...I find that very, very sad. I, personally, was very pleased to watch this video, and I'm happy for the guys who built the rig. Great job!

  • That was so fucking cool!

  • I heard better songs from OK Go, but geez, the song wasn't that bad. Get off your high horses. There are way more worse songs out there getting heavy rotation play now.

  • @takerdust sad fact of life - some people will always overlook the good for what they think is the bad, even if what they think is bad isn't.

  • or maybe that should have been "especially" when what they think is bad isn't. hmm.

  • Nice try to hide a crap song with a over complicated music vid. Fail.

  • @ClaritySWE I kind of agree. however it was very successful and they made a lot of money! So I don't think they care =/

  • The video is awesome but the song sucks

  • Gotta love female engineers, only they would say, yea I love my high heel but damn it would look cool in that project, let's use it!

  • it's not just one cut, but maybe they had to switch cameras for the closeup of the ball rolling through the tunnel, so maybe it's still one take

  • Very impressive video.

Too bad the song is kinda bad.

  • the song is awful

  • @defect530 Indeed, and the vid was'nt that good either.

  • my first thought about the curtain lighting thing was to trust the presenter and assume it was some law of refraction. but the piano cut away was crushing so I guess we can say it was mostly one take.

  • lol "just hanging out with our grammy. What whaaaaat!"

  • Woa, it would be easier to design a song around that thing than a thing around that song.

  • @BaileysBeads I see what you're getting at but either way it would have been hard to do and OK Go had the RGM idea after they recorded the album that the song was in so there wouldn't be a point to make yet another song just for the video. :)

  • That was awesome :D

  • WOW. Awesome Video

  • Amazing

  • I love ok go but this isn't thier best music. I wish they had a catchier song to go with this...

  • I feel cheated... there is a hidden cut at 10:06 when the curtains open. Watch the light showing through the left curtain. It is the fluorescent inside the tunnel, and it shifts over about 2 feet. Too bad...

  • @Propolandante no u

  • @Propolandante good eye

  • @Propolandante Wow, good eye! Don't feel too cheated. I'm sure they had a few successful runs like the guy stated in the beginning but spliced two different ones together to get the best looking video possible.

  • @Propolandante Nope, it's light reflecting off the bowling ball.

  • @sdaciuk It's absolutely a hidden cut. The light is the same shape as the fluorescent light, and the actual light should also be shining through if that was the case. The light jumps as soon as the curtains pull back

  • @Propolandante I think that's a reflection from the metal ball. you can see it in other places on the curtain, and it's pretty hard to get a curtain to fold exactly the same way twice; that's be a horrible place to make a cut.

  • @GRNoam It's not as simple as a cut, they have 2 layers of video. They crop the curtain as the first layer, and behind the curtain is a separate take, under the curtain's layer. There's one more hidden cut that they hid really well, and it's when they pan behind some metal bars. You can see the piano move, but that one is harder to find

  • @Propolandante are you sure?

  • @guitaradrenaline13 yes, look at freddiew's video about it

  • @Propolandante where's another one when the camera goes behind the weird metal things at about 9:43, you can see the piano in the back move & the guy in yellow disappear for a split second

  • @julia313p Yeah, I didn't notice that one until I saw the video by freddiew

  • @Propolandante

The piano in the beginning shifts it's location as well behind the steel bars construction.

    He must have known this.

  • @jimius They knew... the machine worked 3 times but each take had minor aesthetic flaws so they spliced it together.

    blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/03/behind_the_scenes_of_ok_gos_rube_go.html

  • @Propolandante you might be right, unless he curtain is somehow bending the light or reflecting a different light. Neither seems likely to me.

  • GREAT song. AMAZING video.

I always wondered what went on at Ikea after hours...

  • wow. That is cool as hell.

  • must have been painfully fun to do this.,.. :)

  • I'm going to watch the video again, but I'm going to mute the sound, I don't want to torture myself with that terrible song.

  • WOW!

    Magic begins @7:42

  • AWESOME :) 4,444,444,444,444,444,444 STARS :)

  • impressive

  • BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!

  • I love that video.... and its not even the kind of music I usually listen to. :D Its just that awesome.

  • that song was terrible

  • @thebibleisfiction

Good Grief! Who cares! It is not always about the music. The video was fun and amazing engineering. I am entertained... and admittedly distracted by shiny moving objects

  • @saintralph

    shiny moving objects rock.

  • OK GO RULES

  • was that 9 commandments or 10?

  • @legodesi #10 is "In one shot".

  • @kelseywall

    good catch. thanks.

  • This video was not made in one take.... /watch?v=fV23EVZ-nc4

  • @EmiNemfan0il Yea, generally Rube Goldberg machines take several attempts to get perfect. This one took 6 months.

  • @EmiNemfan0il oooh, I didn't notice the piano one... good catch! Kind of disappointing that the guy is misleading the audience... THIS IS TED DAMMIT!

  • Very nice except the painfully awful music

  • @sangsomlipo i recommend you watch "fischli/ weiss" " der lauf der dinge" there they have no music :)

  • awesome. i wonder what it must feel like to invest months into 3 minutes :S

  • @Mat2DaW ask pixar ;) or other animation/movie studios.. film makers, artists, musicians.. i think it's a mixture between relief, happiness that it's over and probably also a little sadness, because it 's probably fun...

  • @Mat2DaW what about stop motion films? Like Tim Burton's Corpse Bride... In a week if they get 3/5 minutes worth of film done, it's considered really good progress!

  • I am pretty sure there are cuts in the music video. Still awesome.

  • Yeah... The machine is pretty neat I suppose :p.

  • Holy mother of god...

  • awesome

  • FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP AMERICA'S CHERNOBYL

  • @FreedomForMankind sounds nice but the first priority should be a world without a faggot like you

  • Could it MAYBE have been a better to use all this creative energy to MAYBE get a grip on the oil spill?

    OK...delusional comment. Apologies.

  • @2bsirius Yes maybe you should go back in time 9 months and tell them that they shouldn't make a music video because there is going to be an oil spill in the future... Dumbass.

  • @christopherawesome

It was intended as a sardonic humor. Sorry my comment seemed offend your literal sensibilities.

  • @2bsirius Money isn't the solution to the oil spill. The solution is people using shit that's worked in the past instead of fucking trying to put a giant cup over the hole.

  • @VitriolicAC

    I agree.

  • that's a lot of efford for such a crappy music video.

i find they should rather have used the money to hire a good director.

  • LOL

  • 3rd

  • nice

  • @terasearcher first
