Oh crap! I didn't mean to say "blatantly missing from the software." I should have said, "subtle differences that just aren't there in the software, that you can hear in the hardware version. Very sorry for the misrepresentation!
Sorry, I disagree - only slightly. I have a WS EX, with plenty of "memory cards" (the one's Korg sent out, as well as some 3rd parties). I can tell a distinct difference between the Legacy WS, and the original. I've read reviews about the Legacy that come to the same conclusion. They're NOT the same. It's subtle, but there are differences in the hardware, blatantly missing from the software. Our own ears discern this, but it's nothing to get upset about. Both platforms are amazing!
There are...But contrary to what I had originally posted above, the differences are subtle. I remember when the M1 first came out. We used it exclusively on a soundtrack for a movie. Little did we know that it's sound would become predominate within the next few months, or so. When we were in the studio and recording, the engineer brought out this "brilliant new keyboard" called the M1. We had never heard it before and we went over-the-top with it. Now, it's embarrassing to listen back to.
Wavestation SR is very cheap now, since the Legacy Collection. The software implementation really is nice for the Wavestation. Brighter sounding than the hardware, but EQing can make them very similar, if desired. In this case, VST is probably easier to work with for most. Comes with a full complement of waveforms too. A successful emulation, I think.
Analogue emulation is something else, though, and software is always a different undertaking than hardware, of course.
Actually yes, I have access to a wavestation (even though it's not mine) and you can even manually take the original roms and replace the ones in the legacy. They are 100% the same. Digital synthesizers, unlike analog ones, are very easy to reproduce exactly since they're just code and PCM samples.
Though they may have improved some of the effects algorithms, so if I remember correctly that lead had some distortion on it, and that might sound different, but it's just a matter of tweaking it. That's 50% of being a synth player, tweaking around. If you think about it, the wavestation really is a computer just as much as your PC (or MAC) just old.
But every other sound is exactly the same. Power up, select the voice and play - Hardware synth or legacy collection, they sound the same. All except Mini Lead. You don't have to tweak the others to get the sound right. In fact, no amount of tweaking gets the Legacy Mini Lead right anyway.
Awsome ! I loved the sound so much ive just won one on ebay for £120.00, i was prepared to pay twice that much money for one...cant wait till i receive it, i may even post some demos of it my self.
should ahve just got the Wavestation VSTi. Can download thousands and thousands of sounds to load into the softsynth. Korg Digital edition comes also with the M1 and the Wavestation. and I believe you can get both for about $150.00
Yeah, retro the wave station was my introduction to digital synthisis. I really hated the menu diving, but if you had patience you could really make some awesoe sounds with this machine. It's why I still own a triton and a wavestation. Plus Korg in the keyboard world is like Toyota in the auto world, they hold up for years and years.
This is the SHIT! Lovely pad...The Wavestation is defiantly a synth you need to program to get the best out of imo something I always found hard on it. When I had one I didnt like it but then I heard other people use it and I was like WOW.
The Wavestation and the Prophecy/Z1 are imo Korgs best synths, not fussed on the MS-20 not my style of sound.
I have a WaveStation A/D rack in the studio and would never part with it - lovely, huge and evolving pads - very sad that it has no resonant filters - what the heck were Korg thinking of??
another superb track! damn, i got the ws ex for a few months but still haven't learned very much, like the wave sequencing. your vids inspire me to study the machine more!
