  • Were there any Volkswagen buses manufactured in the United States, or were they all manufactured abroad (Germany, Brazil, etc.) in the 1960s and '70s?

An older cousin of my family had a VW bus, a VW "camper" is what I think we called it at the time. I always enjoyed our trips in his VW, as he'd drive over steep hills (near a lake where he also had a boat and family members went water-skiing) and come down them very fast, to simulate a roller-coaster. Little kids are often easily amused.

  • Great!

  • thats not a full brass band, snot even a brass band!

  • well that's true huh?

  • Beetlejuice, the VW Bus,called here "Kombi",was the first product manufactured by VW of Brazil,in 1957.The VW Beetle, known here as "Fusca",started production in 1959.The Bus used this style here until 1975,and then changed to the "Clipper" model (quite the same as the german 1967 one).

A big Bus hug from Brazil !!!!!

  • Hey Buzian,

Thanks for your reply here! You give us the information we missed!

  • Paul,

It´s interesting to know that the Bus is still on production, now using a water-cooled engine instead of the air cooled, and it´s the best selling commercial vehicle sold here in Brazil...It caries the same post-67 design, and all production is sold,so VW of Brazil doesn´t make ads of them anymore...

  • @buzian

Hey Buzian, was the Kombi the first automobile manufactured in brasil? Awesome. Brasil is amazing. There is a Kombi in almost every street your drive past in Rio and Sao Paulo. I was amazed.

  • In fact the very first car produced in Brazil was a Auto Union DKW wagon based in 1957.

The VW's came some months later, first the Bus and then the Beetle. Our Kombi is very famous because it's still on production, and the first generation was produced here until 1975, then came the "Clipper" model. The actual Kombi is powered by a 1.4 liter water-cooled engine, the air-cooled boxer was out in 2007 due to emissions regulations. They're very popular and has no match in our market till now.

  • @buzian

Man I was really disappointed VW raised the roof on their 1996+ Kombi

    it lost that classic look.

I also notice that all the other parts on the 1996+ Kombi are exact same as the European Bay Window kombi - I am guessing they shipped all the machines and dies over to brasil.

  • The main problem for VW was the robbery that occurs here, so they decided to slightly change the sheetmetal to difficult the actual scene. They became more "boxy" for that...

  • @buzian

That response is just the cool of the cool. Man that was cool.

  • @buzian

Where abouts are you in brasil Buzion? I am in Florianopolis.

  • I live very near you, at Rio Grande do Sul, near Porto Alegre area

  • @buzian Muito Obrigado!

  • @buzian The 'Kombi' was the half trade/half bus with rear removable seats and 3 windows ether side...

This would be a 15 window deluxe microbus...

    Drop cars not bombs... Ben

  • @badbenjy

    Exactly, Badbenjy !!!

  • man they must have figured most people buying vdubs were members brass bands.

  • @curepunkx

    "

I would say it was time to get SSVC in here but they are so arrogant they believe that Brasilian Kombis do not exist!

  • watch your mouth, please. 75 in the title does not refer to the production year of the commercial. It is the 75th commercial I posted on YouTube!

  • 75 my ass... They quit making that style in 67.

  • You Dont know a brazilian vw bus(kombi).
