At least Sgt. Freedom is in Arizona (Southwest) and is in an area where he could be greatly affected by illegal immigration's more negative aspects. But most of the people so fervently against illegals in this country keep bitchin n moaning when they've NEVER and probably NEVER WILL be affected by this!! Seriously, wtf? There are ways to deal with this program in a clear-headed manner that don't involve mass deportations or round-ups or anything of the sort.

The fact of the matter is, most people on both sides of this debate, esp. the angry conservatives who despise illegals (all b/c they have the word "illegal" next to their name, despite ever having known one personally) are driven by emotion when it comes to this issue. Stop and think for more than 10 seconds. We need a moderate approach that addresses all the issues on immigration, not just some "quick fix" like Operation Wetback that rounds people up and deports em.

All illegal immigration experts, not just normal people with strong views, but actual experts, support some kind of guest-worker program. Guest worker programs with good rules and regulations MAKES sense. Let them go to a border checkpoint, get documentation and register (if they're safe and have no criminal background) to work for about a year or so here, and then go back. Soemthing like that. We had a program like that but for some reason it was ended in the 70s. Jeez.

I'm no friend of illegal immigration, but a lot of the problem is exaggerated by conservatives. Only a relative few (and I mean few) areas are really hard-hit by an influx of illegal immigrants. Of course we need good border security, but does it really make much sense to deport someone who started out illegal but has been here, 5, 10, maybe 20 years, was a law-abiding hard-workign person contributing to society?? I think not. Plus, any economics expert will tell you it that would hurt.

We need to think deeply about this issue rather than the same knee-jerk responses, left and right. Open borders is stupid, but going around rounding up every person suspected of being illegal and deporting him is just as dumb. I support deporting illegals who commit crimes like murder or rape, sure, but if they were contributors to society and just happened to be here illegally BEFORE we implemented the border security to keep further illegals out, I don't think we have a right to kick em out.
