A nationalized legalization on gay marriage would be illegal under the 10th amendment to the Constitution.
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
So gay marriage can be legal, provided its done in a STATE setting.
A national ban or legalization are both illegal... the states have the power to decide.

I have personally spoken with people in opposition to this issue and usually if the Bible isn't referred to, they claim that gay marriage would "undermine the traditional family", but I haven't heard HOW it would do that, or why obeying tradition is more important than equality.
Don't know, its hard to tell. I kept my non-religious conviction to my-self. While majority puts "No Religious Preference" on there dog tags, I doubt there all atheist. I have only met two that I could be sure they where atheists.
