this was always one of my favorite scenes, because with all the medical advances in Star Trek sometimes the simplest thing like Music Therapy and even art therapy is often the best way to break through to someone. the comment about if I wanted to go to a concert to hear someone sing, was pretentious why even click on this video then?
They sing very well, but if I wanted to hear people singing, I'd go to a concert, church or chorus. These theatrical performances always strike me as some of the most pretentious moments on "Star Trek," which is odd, considering that the one thing these actors would be qualified to do is act. Probably none of them knows much about physics, astronomy or space travel in real life, but acting ought to be the one thing they know. Yet, it seems pretentious.
This is essentially music therapy and it resonated with me as my younger sister's eldest daughter has Downs, and in her early years I believe they did have a form of music therapy.
This is an excellent way of helping those with special needs as Sarina was portrayed as having, sadly in these times of public spending cuts, music therapy is one of the things that is first to be cut. Unless anyone knows differently.
As a vocal student and instructor, this song is sublime. I love DS9, but this scene always blends the two worlds of music theory and sci-fi into one beautiful package. Bravo! :)
@JayKayDanks I would love to oblige, but the brunette is singing notes that don't exist in the scale ("SLA?") and the fat guy gets drowned out near the end and you can't make out what he's singing because his lips don't match the song.
Sarina's easy, since they cranked her mic up higher than the others. The main guy is also easy, because he's really not doing much but providing the background. Can't get the other two. I got some of the fat guy's but the brunette is killing me.
when you reach this point in the show you see just how fantastic this moment is for Julian and how this moment right here is the fulfillment of his hopes and dreams as a doctor. It's what is his pride and joy.
I fell in love a little with Faith Salie watching this episode... her smile when Julian sees her emerge on the Promenade... then of course this scene.
Is too bad she hasn't done more acting... I think her talent's wasted as a gossip show host.
Did you know she had *No training* whatsoever before this? she discovered this talent during the filming of this episode, I would have never guessed. Her voice is like sweet honey to the ears.
It's no surprise that Julian is depicted as being smitten by Sabrina, she's portrayed as an divine vision of perfection, talented, beautiful and intelligent without being conceited at all.
Mmmm, as someone else said, she's truly the stuff dreams are made of.
I heard that too about her having no training and discovering her ability to sing in this episode but there is another video on youtube of her in something from the 80's and she's singing...So it leads me to believe she did know she could?
This scene is easily in my top 10, maybe 20 of "scenes that jerk some tears out of me every time even though I've already seen it over a dozen times."
Some one earlier commented that they're :"just singing the scales", but if you listen to the whole scene from the beginning you'll notice they're actually singing the show's openning theme song: Lauren is singing counter-point, Sabrina is the main melody, and Patrick & Jack are providing the part played by the horns.
wow ive watch this scene many times and never noticed that.
i guessed it was some classic melody its amazing how catchy and sublime it is yet i actualy had to hum it back to myself alongside the themesong before it became familiar
I agree, its like the scene in Voyager with the doctor and 7of9, although a simple song it was beautifully sung I love it when the cast get involved in stuff like that.
It's funny: A simple song to test one's vocal ability can be so catchy and so great :)
