GrowingTreeAz, yeah, that's a big part of the movie. There's more, I'm sure. But, as with any real masterpiece of cinema, it's not easy to put a finger on everything that makes Avatar great. Or, any Cameron masterpiece as far as I'm concerned.

I've never actually seen characters like Jake Sully or Colonel Quaritch on film before. They are the driving force of this film. In fact, Avatar is more about Jake, his transformation and his allegances than it is about liberating Pandora.
AVATAR has pushed CGI to the next level. I want to tell something, no matter how hard they do there is something lacking because its not real. I have researched on CGI for all most 3 yrs what i found was u cant cheat real world. CGI is still in its infancy even now after avatar. There still lots to be done to make it look real. Maybe in next 100 yrs it may become possible.
Anyone remember what it was like to visit Pandora in theaters for the first time? I went the midnight screening at one of the local IMAX theaters. The theater was packed out. But, there wasn't the same kind of electricity that surrounded SW: The Phantom Menace before it started. LOL. When that POS ended, it was like D-Day for movie fans. When Avatar ended, it was literally like visiting Eden and having to drive away afterward. I mean, the audience was feeling euphoric.

I was taken in by the pace and setting, certainly, but for a masterpiece it lacked originality and ingenuity in all areas EXCEPT the technical realisation of 3D. Neither charcters, story nor narrative were new or even particularly well drawn. Still, a very enjoyable tiem spent with popcorn and softdrink, but in terms of advancing or even adding to the art of movies - if we think of it like this - I feel it lacked.

Ironically my favorite character would probably have to be Colonel Quaritch -- by the end of the film, I found the Na'vi's self-satisfied attitude to be wholly intolerable, and the "romance" was equally awful (sorry, Tsu'tey!). James Cameron's comments on the film's criticism of the Iraq War also feel awkward -- assuming "unobtanium" was meant to represent oil, very little of our oil comes from Iraq.

Now, Cameron has openly stated that he was inspired by Dances with Wolves, but the problem is the product ended up to be a little too similar to other films
Nolan said the same, but the difference is, he presents his work in a completley different manner. Keeping some scenes in tribute as inspiration that we recognize and yet it is compltley new.

@AngelDust155 No. Pocohantas was RELEASED in 1995. It's a 1992 project. It was delayed and went back in production in 1993. It's process was stretched with The Lion King, but it ended up finished and was released on June 23rd, 1995.
The story for Pocahontas was written WAY BEFORE Avatar.
And Cameron's screenplay wasn't written back then. More like a draft script. It wasn't official, but either way, the story of Pocohantas came first

Please don't hate me for this but I honestly hated this movie. I saw it in 3D and I couldn't tell the difference! I thought Titanic was much better, and I still think it grossed more. For all the avatar lovers out there, I understand why you liked the movie. But it's just not the kind if thing that appeals to me.

Avatar for ME is just an astonishing technological achievement. i mean the story line and the plot are not the most original thing in the world, but the formula works.

The biggest one being the robotic machines. This was also directed by James Cameron so I guess there can't be alot of fuss about this. But this film is still AMAZING!!!

@LukeLovesRose Inspiration is different from adaption. Adaption is different from uncredited plagerism.
Now, Cameron has openly stated that he was inspired by Dances with Wolves, but the problem is the product ended up to be a little too similar to other films
Nolan said the same, but the difference is, he presents his work in a completley different manner. Keeping some scenes in tribute as inspiration that we recognize and yet it is compltley new.
But whatever, Avatar IS a geat film.

Avatar and DWW are VERY DIFFERENT films.
I swear. Any movie that features native people will be compared to some other goddamn story.

@LukeLovesRose I have seen Dances with Wolves and no, they are VERY SIMILAR. If you are to compare the plot of two movies you don't bring out the small details and that is what you are doing. Avatar is really similar to Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, Fern Gully and of course, Pocohantas!

@AngelDust155 No. Pocohantas was RELEASED in 1995. It's a 1992 project. It was delayed and went back in production in 1993. It's process was stretched with The Lion King, but it ended up finished and was released on June 23rd, 1995.
The story for Pocahontas was written WAY BEFORE Avatar.
And Cameron's screenplay wasn't written back then. More like a draft script. It wasn't official, but either way, the story of Pocohantas came first

Please don't hate me for this but I honestly hated this movie. I saw it in 3D and I couldn't tell the difference! I thought Titanic was much better, and I still think it grossed more. For all the avatar lovers out there, I understand why you liked the movie. But it's just not the kind if thing that appeals to me.

I like this film quite alot even if the storyline was a tiny bit predictable but who cares. But there was definitely some parts in the film from the legendary film Aliens. The biggest one being the robotic machines. This was also directed by James Cameron so I guess there can't be alot of fuss about this. But this film is still AMAZING!!!

Titanic was pretty damn predictable, wasn't it? Does that make Titanic a bad film?? NOOOO. That's the irony. The predictability of both Titanic and Avatar seem to be a strength. Cameron knows that we know what's coming and he plays on that. No one else in Hollywood can do that so perfectly.
